To not want cats using my garden

temporarygate · 06/04/2020 13:18

Our neighbours cats are frequently in my garden. Last summer they kept shitting at the bottom of our slide and killing birds a our bird feeder. We installed plastic fence spikes to deter them and the neighbour knocked on our door complaining his cats might get injured and that cats have the right to roam.

We have left the spikes up which has stopped them running across the fences to catch birds but the cats continue to come in through trees at the back of the garden and now have adopted our new garden sofas. We bought some of those ultrasonic sounders things but they are not making a difference. We spent £90 on sofa covers to prevent the cats sleeping on the garden furniture but every morning when we go out the cats shoot from under the covers - this morning there’s wet cat hair all over the cushions. I bring the throw cushions indoors but not the seat as back cushions as they are huge and there’s loads of them.

I feel pissed off that I’m going to a lot of hassle and expense of buying things and covering things for someone else’s pets to use.

My previous neighbours cats used to shit in my garden all the time (I haaaaaaaate cats and allergic). I used to get a poop a scoop and fling it over in to their garden, they saw me asked me what I was doing and told them I'm sending their cats shit back over. They actually said "ok fair enough" 😂 didn't see their cats much after that, and around 6 months later they moved

Maudiejames · 06/04/2020 23:08

The cats on both sides come and actually shit on the lawn every day. I’ve dug up almost a full Sainsburys bag of their shit. It’s not nice for my child to play on the lawn.

Sh05 · 06/04/2020 23:08

I've only read upto page 5 so this may already have been said and maybe even a bit daft but if you see it in your garden during the day maybe play a recording of a dog barking/ growling. Don't know how effective it might be but worth a try.
Citrus peel is also supposed to deter cats and I know the range used to sell a powder that you could sprinkle around your plants to deter cats

justcly · 06/04/2020 23:15

Supersoakers, cat alarms, water pistols and cat repellent - fine.

Spikes (even if they are plastic), trapping, picking cats up and dumping them in water are all animal cruelty. You will be liable for any injury sustained by the cat and the RSPCA will prosecute you.

And finally, toxoplasmosis does not "leave virus" anywhere. It's a parasite, not a virus.

Lordfrontpaw · 07/04/2020 10:34

Wild citrus peel deter squirrels? I shoo the little buggers away - and I do really like the cute little vermin - but my poor plants!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 10:53

I put bramble branches down where cats used to do their business. No cats anymore.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 10:55

You can diy cat barricade from pipes. It rotates so cat can't get over it.

Sometimeswinning · 07/04/2020 11:45

* I imprison cats and feed them ham.*
This is definitely a headline for a take a break magazine or Dailymail!

My neighbours cats used to crap all over my lawn.

So I got a cat of my own and now I have no crap of my lawn.

It just costs me in feeding, worming and flea treatment each month.
Very pleased with my solution

motherheroic · 07/04/2020 11:55

My mom used to take the shovel and fling the shit back into the neighbours garden.

Whoareyoudududu · 07/04/2020 11:57

I don’t have an issue with cats so much, at least they usually cover their shit up. What I do have an issue with is dog shit or more to the point, owners who don’t pick it up. Someone let their dog do a massive shit directly outside of our gate a few months ago so I sprinkled pepper all over and it never did it again. Fucking dog owners.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/04/2020 12:02

It’s got worse recently it seems too. On the little walks around the block I’m telling my son to constantly watch the dog poo.
It’s dastardly

I’m guessing it’s from people who are used to going to the woods and not worrying about it too much and now they have to walk their dogs on the pavement they still don’t pick it up.

With the weather as lovely as it is it’s not even going anywhere soon.

mumwon · 07/04/2020 16:46

(still think lion poo sounds a good plan Grin) lets post some to....

Yes - I was going to call it the Batshit Award, but maybe for this special occasion we should rename it the Catshit Award?

Like any cat shit it will just get lobbed straight back.

Frankenheimer · 07/04/2020 23:13

Don't worry, Ronnie, we love you really. You've given us all a lot of entertainment in a boring lockdown!

cricketmum84 · 07/04/2020 23:16

Crazy thread.

I'm sorry but if someone "humanely" trapped my cat I would knock them into the middle of next week.

cricketmum84 · 07/04/2020 23:20

@Maudiejames we have two. She refuses to use either of them and mews pitifully at the back door before we let her out.

There's a lot of cats on our street. One of our neighbours threatened to put poison down for the cats shitting in his garden. I had a quiet word with cricketcat however she doesn't understand English and ate the poison resulting in 14 days hospitalisation, very almost losing her and a £4500 vets bill.

Hence why I find this subject a little emotive.

Electrical · 07/04/2020 23:53

Cat owners who let the animals go outside don’t give a fuck that each time the animal is risking: being hit by a car, collar caught on something, being lifted by someone who enjoys killing animals, being mauled by other predators, catching a disease, being injured on glass or whatever, eating poison, getting stuck/locked in somewhere, etc.etc.
If they kept the animal indoors it’d be safe, not shiteing all round the place, not decimating native species, and they’d get the ‘pleasure’ of having the animal around all the time.
Why do these threads always end up with people posting photos of identical looking boring cats? 😄

pawsies · 08/04/2020 01:34

Cricketmum

Wait your neighbour said he would poison cats that came on his property and you STILL let your cat out?

That's so irresponsible. Your poor cat. Why on earth would you not keep your cat in after that comment?

RonnieBarkingMad · 08/04/2020 01:58

Hmm I assume you did much worse to the neighbour that laid poison down for your cat and caused it to almost die and cost you £4500? What did you do about this, it must have been major compared to knocking someone into next week for humanely trapping a cat and returning it to cat owner?

Fluffybutter · 08/04/2020 08:49

@Electrical What a twatty thing to post .

MsTSwift · 08/04/2020 08:56

Cats are basically ruling the neighbourhood now strutting around not complying with lockdown and now there is barely any traffic they are pretty much risk free. It’s a hard time for cat haters. Their blood pressure must be through the roof. Although on the bright side shooting cats that enter your garden with water pistols is quite a fun lockdown activity

Electrical · 08/04/2020 10:52

Point out exactly which bit. People who choose to have a cat should keep it safe and indoors= ‘a twatty post’😄
