With neighbours if sticking to the 2 metre rule?

OP posts:

People all over Spain and Italy were shown on the news singing with each other, having discos, playing bands etc.
They were all on their balconies. Having lived in Spain for a number of years I can tell you sitting on your balcony is normal.

Why then is it abnormal for the British to sit on their driveways? Why is it different?

I'm actually quite glad I don't know any Mners (that I know of in RL!) I couldn't be bothered with the content level of intrusion and judgement into every decision I made.

And yes I do have common sense. Ds asked if we could buy an ice cream when out on our walk today - obviously I said no! It is not essential to have queued a outside near people (2m or not!)

LaurieMarlow · 06/04/2020 14:24

Just stay in at home, not out in

Jesus Christ.

This is not the advice for the non vulnerable. What are you hoping to achieve by making up your own, more oppressive than official guidelines and making a tough situation even more difficult?

Chillicheese123 · 06/04/2020 14:27

@lauriemarlow

But her SISTER is a PHYSIOTHERAPIST!!

VegetableMunge · 06/04/2020 14:28

Oh well, in that case...

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/04/2020 14:32

I've had the habit of sitting on my front step on sunny evenings, sometimes with a glass of wine, for years, as that's where the sun is by the time I get home from work.

The nice thing about lockdown is my neighbours have stopped regarding this habit as eccentric at best and terribly common at worst, and actually smile and say hello when they see me - instead of glaring at me like I'm lowering the property values just by being there!

Unless any of them suddenly took a yen to run up my steps towards me, we're no closer than we are in our back gardens.

Bluesheep8 · 06/04/2020 14:34

Her SISTER is a PHYSIOTHERAPIST? Are you sure??

Beansandcoffee · 06/04/2020 14:38

My neighbour is a policeman. We all sit on our drives, at least 3 meters apart and have a glass of wine. It’s saving me to be honest.

Abraid2 · 06/04/2020 14:39

I thought the designated shopper was Dominic Raab?

Redwoodmaz · 06/04/2020 14:39

The 2 metre rule is the distance to keep away from people when you need to go out - shopping/getting medical supplies etc.
It's NOT an excuse for a get-together!!!
DO NOT MIX WITH DIFFERENT HOUSEHOLDS

AWryGiraffe · 06/04/2020 14:45

Get off the caps lock button!

C8H10N4O2 · 06/04/2020 14:46

It's NOT an excuse for a get-together!!!

I think you need two more exlamation marks there.

justasking111 · 06/04/2020 14:47

Folk are getting a bit hysterical about this. Sitting on your own driveway you are further away than the italians on their balconies.

My neighbour a transplant patient aka very high risk, is gardening and sharing a beer with neighbours at a safe distance.

So it applies if you are in your garden and your neighbour speaks to you. That's not mixing households.

Bluesheep8 · 06/04/2020 14:49

People (including shop staff) get closer to me in shops than my neighbour did when we had a conversation over the wall.

NotACleverName · 06/04/2020 14:52

I saw my GP out walking on Saturday.

I hope you called the police, @Bluesheep8. We can't have none of this walking malarkey.

BubblyBarbara · 06/04/2020 14:53

The rule is not around going outside, it’s about leaving your property and going into public space with other people. You are free to use your driveway or garden as you wish

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 06/04/2020 14:54

We can't have none of this walking malarkey

Grin I totally just read that in a League of Gentleman type way. "Are you local? There'll be no walkin' 'ere!"
Bluesheep8 · 06/04/2020 15:08

notaclevername ha ha,I was tempted.... AND she SPOKE to me and EVERYTHING!!

AngeloMysterioso · 06/04/2020 15:15

OP, for the future, here’s how these threads tend to go:

OP: AIBU to step outside my door?
Most of MN: NO YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED!!! THAT IS NOT ESSENTIAL!!! THAT IS AGAINST THE RULES!!!

Hope that helps Smile

Deux · 06/04/2020 15:28

Is someone on this thread seriously suggesting that chatting to neighbours whilst maintaining social distance is “mixing households”?

I thought reading comprehension was taught at school Confused

LadyHofH · 06/04/2020 15:28

You forgot PEOPLE WILL DIE, and STAY THE FUCK INDOORS, Angelo. Hang your head in shame, please.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/04/2020 15:29

Driveway Drinks, now there is a thing, just don't clap though!!!

Nobody can stop you if you are on your driveway and the neighbours on theirs and you have the right spacing. You are on your own property and they on theirs. Anyone who has a go and yes that includes the Police, could be told to do one, as you're doing nothing wrong.

Chillicheese123 · 06/04/2020 15:32

The police round here are too bloody busy with car thefts and marauding hordes of teens on bikes at 3am to be arsed about neighbours talking on their drives, to be honest.

People must live in bloody Balamory for the police to have so much spare time !

PhilCornwall1 · 06/04/2020 15:33

@Chillicheese123 I'm wondering where they all are around here. Haven't seen any in over a week.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/04/2020 15:39

Of course it's fine if your drives are well apart. The government isn't trying to incarcerate or punish people. The reality is in most situations everyone is safest if they minimise leaving their own property, however that doesn't mean never speaking to a next door neighbour a few metres away etc. People would get depressed and mentally unwell trying.
