You don't have to be miles from the sea to find fossils. Where I used to live in South Downs Sussex and in Kent we found lots of fossilised sea creatures especially in chalk pits or excavations. That's because many thousands of years ago the land was covered by sea and the creatures fell to the seabed where they became trapped and turned into fossils.

They are very lucky.

I was about to say it's a fossilised sea-urchin but I see I got beaten to it!

Yep it is a sea urchin fossil - how lovely. I had several of thse as a child.

Wilma, I'm actually in the north downs -although the soil it was lifted from is quite heavy clay there are also lots of chalky patches. Amazing! I wonder if someone has found it before and it was misplaced or this is just how it was. I've found lots of things in the allotment (key, toy car, marbles...) but this is the most interesting find!
