To wonder if these views sometimes go together

So I have two relatives who very very stong views on certain subjects.

They were both extremely Pro Brexit.
Both are very much anti vaxers and just recently have been very vocal in the opinion that the whole corona virus has been exaggerated to keep us in our place etc etc

Now I may not agree with their opinion on Brexit but they are in the majority .

However I am finding their views on the latter two to be quite extreme and wonder where it has come from.

Does anyone else know people who share these views as I just don't get it.

I’m not going to be drawn on the bun fight that is Brexit.

But surely it’s easy to see why there would be a link between anti-vaccination and dismissing the veracity of coronavirus severity?

thenightsky · 04/04/2020 23:02

I know someone who is absolutely convinced covid 19 is a conspiracy. She's also anti vac. But she's strongly remain on Brexit.

You're going to find different 1 or 2 out of your 3 mostly I think OP.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 04/04/2020 23:05

Yeah I did think that the Brexit thing was a red herring really and that the latter two are more linked..

Well pro Brexit and antivac are both linked surely in terms of who believes in them

Confused

It's called conservatism. If you're old enough, you just have to ask: what would Maggie have thought/ done?

(Maybe not the anti-vaxxing bit, quite so obviously. That seems more American religious right than Thatcherism.)

🤦‍♀️

Not another brexit (bashing?) thread.

Everyone is different - some will be remain and anti vax, some will be brexit and anti vax.

Some will be brexit and in to conspiracy theories. Some will be remain and into conspiracy theories.

I voted brexit (my right. I'm happy with the decision, blah blah blah). I am not anti vaccines. I don't buy most of the conspiracy theories on covid-19, but I do think there is stuff we r not being told.

safariboot · 04/04/2020 23:23

People who are drawn towards one conspiracy theory tend to be drawn towards others. There's a psychology of it, though it's not something I've looked into in detail.

Brexit's not exactly a conspiracy theory, but there was a lot of the same anti-expert, anti-media, anti-government stance involved.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 05/04/2020 12:34

I don't see a political link eitherr really. One of the relatives is probably the most left wing person I know but the other is definitely Tory.

I don't know anyone who shares all 3 views.

I know people who are pro Brexit and believe the MMR overloads systems and should be given as individual vaccines. I also know people who feel like that about vaccines and are pro remain.

I'm not aware of knowing anyone who feels that way about CV but most of the people I know are not stupid. Grin
