Is there one rule for the rich and another for the poor

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:24

I know I'm not BU, but I have to rant and hopefully get some replies. Maybe I am?

We live as 'staff' on a rural estate in Norfolk where the owners are multi-millionaires with houses all over the world. We look after their country retreat all year round. We live in a cottage in the grounds. Not a bad situation, but it has its drawbacks. One is, when they are here they have loud parties that take over and zero consideration for us. There are several cottages in the grounds, mostly empty most of the year except for these parties.

They have three children (30s) who live in London. TODAY, middle of lockdown their three adult children decide to arrive with their partners, six adults in total. They've moved into the cottages in the grounds. Its a private estate so no Police to tell them to go indoors. Apparently they'll quarantine, but already they're drinking and starting to party.

They've driven down from London and are blatantly flaunting the rules. The rich are immune to rules. The poor stick to them. If the examples are to be believed and one infected person could infect up to almost 500 people eventually, that means they've potentially brought the virus and could infect up to 3000 people.

I hate them all, they're rude, entitled, snobby, unpleasant cruel people most of the time. We have no choice at the moment, but I for one will be looking to move on as soon as I can.

Well it’s only wealthy family. I’m sure plenty of other wealthy people are complying. I’m sure plenty of less wealthy people aren’t.

Some people of idiots. Some people aren’t.

Sounds horrible though and not surprised you are very annoyed.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 04/04/2020 18:28

you are right. there are different rules for the rich and the poor. Money cocoons people.

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:28

I think if you have enough money to do it, they'll be doing it. I know of another local family, loads of money, all came up from London just after lockdown and holed up here until July.

I was thinking today, it's a bit interesting how many high profile, rich and famous, have already been affected. This could be why. I wouldn't care if their selfish behaviour only affected themselves. But when it can affect, perhaps fatally, hapless victims with no say, like yourself, that's when my blood truly boils.

PerfidiousAlbion · 04/04/2020 18:30

Well yes, money talks as they say and if you add privilege and position, even more so.

Having said that though, you get dickheads in all levels of society.

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:32

Yep dickheads everywhere. Potentially they could infect DH and I. If we weren't working we'd have no money (only SSP), they don't need to worry about money, we really do.

Boils my piss.

Have you changed the age of the children? Are William and Kate getting a bit rowdy?

Apparently if it's classed as a residence then you can travel to it. Well that's what Nicola Sturgeon said about Charles.

Escapeistheonlyoption · 04/04/2020 18:33

Well The Royal Family set the bar. William and Kate fled London to their second home in Norfolk- so I assume that others think it is totally acceptable.

rjebgf · 04/04/2020 18:33

I guess nothing can be done if the estate is privately owned. Make sure you keep well away from them as London has so much COVID. Hope they are not expecting you to work in close proximity to them.

Escapeistheonlyoption · 04/04/2020 18:34

I know of another local family, loads of money, all came up from London just after lockdown and holed up here until July.

They were royal, weren't they?

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2020 18:35

Sounds awful but... The rich are immune to rules. The poor stick to them.

That's a load of bollocks ^^

I live in a working class, fairly deprived area and there are plenty of people here not sticking to the rules at all.

The council cordoned off the play area/gym equipment in the park. People tore down the caution tape and every single day, parents can be seen happily letting the kids use it.

And that's just one example. There are plenty more.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 04/04/2020 18:36

YANBU to be angry at the blatant rule ignoring as it is putting you at risk.

YABU to say poor people are sticking to the rules....

Purpletigers · 04/04/2020 18:37

The same thing happened during the plague . The wealthy moved out of London . Of course when they moved back they contracted it just the same.

The rules have always been different if you’ve got lots of money . Unfortunately for them their wealth won’t protect them from this virus should they catch it .
They sound like complete arseholes tbh . You have my sympathy.

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:37

It's definitely not the 'childrens' residence. They're only here twice a year normally.

No not Royalty, but they think they are. Thing is we have to work around them in our roles, it does put us at risk.

Also, our supermarkets are OK, we have enough stock to keep the local residents going (some empty shelves) but definitely not the horrors of the London supermarkets. With six more adults to feed, just here, it'll be like London soon. Bastards, I really wanted them to get stopped on the motorway.

My neighbours are doing the same with their 20 something kids & partners. They all arrived today and are having a massive bbq. They aren’t rich (SE but not overly affluent area). It’s going on everywhere.

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:38

Yes sorry, I'm poor and I'm sticking to rules. It doesn't apply to all, I understand that. There'll be rich who are and poor who are not, I'm just angry.

I live in Scotland. Prince Charles was exposed to the virus thwn decided to come up here.

Teacup34 · 04/04/2020 18:41

No you are not BU it's always been the same and always will be unfortunately.

Lockheart · 04/04/2020 18:43

If they're staying on private grounds I'm not sure it's any worse than the numerous parents collecting university students (and older adult children from London etc, if lots of threads on here are to be believed). Not sure why you think there's one rule for the rich and one for the poor.

Therichhavenorules · 04/04/2020 18:44

@Lockheart - they've travelled from London to Norfolk, their homes are in London. Not essential travel whether private grounds or not!! They are not university students.

Notwiththeseknees · 04/04/2020 18:45

It doesn't sound like living in a tied cottage working for rich people is for you OP.
As you say, probably best taking a different career path when this is over.

BlokeTarget · 04/04/2020 18:48

What difference does it make to you if they stay in their cottages and then have a party ?
It’s their land.

You could always go and find your own accommodation off site.

Or, stop whinging about rich breaking the rules when you could say driving to an isolated area to quarantine with no contact with others is better than being in a city....

There are people driving to Tesco’s still and buying wine and cigarettes. That’s it ( I’ve seen people’s baskets!)
I would argue that isn’t an essential journey, or essential items. But its none of my business and leave them to it.

Maybe you could quarantine in your cottage provided by your employers, and not be so bitter about your employers children staying for a while?

If I were your employer and found this post I’d be inviting you to find alternative housing off my land.

Lockheart · 04/04/2020 18:48

Yes, @Therichhavenorules, and as I also mentioned there have been lots of threads on here from parents fetching their (adult) children from London back to the country.

It's really not one rule for one and one for another. It's one rule for all. No-one should be moving around. But lots of people are. Rich or not.

ElaineMarieBenes · 04/04/2020 18:48

If a person gets caught stealing a loaf of bread then the law applies equally whether you are rich or poor

YANBU
