To be furious at tourists/ summer residents?

I live in a very remote place off of the United States. We have a small year round community (about 500), probably 70% of which are elderly. In the summer we're a tourist and summer renter hotspot so we can swell to 3000.

We have a very small health centre with one physician's assistant who works there. We have a small voluntary ambulance crew (who are also the police and fire crew) and one ambulance.

It takes hours and the physician's assistant has to leave if someone needs to go to a hospital.

Normally summer folk come back here around 4th of July. This year they've been FLOODING back from Covid hotspots in the last few weeks despite their own states having stay at home orders and our state and island very clearly saying we don't have the hospitals or provisions to cope. Our local hospital is already using disposable masks for up to five days, we have just 8 ventilators within a 2 hour drive.

And people that have come back are merrily acting like they're on fucking holiday! Out walking and don't keep their distance, going to the post office (somewhere we have to go as most places here don't have delivery to their house.)

I'm just incredulous after a very strongly worded letter from out town that we have neither the food or the healthcare to support them right now that they're still coming, flights have been going over my house all morning.

I'm really rocked by how selfish people are being. I get the fear but they're endangering so many others with their actions.

Aibu in being so bloody cross with them?

YANBU.

There has been billions of threads on this subject (or at least it seems like it) and YANBU at all.

It is bloody selfish.

Thatnameistaken · 04/04/2020 18:27

You are definitely not being unreasonable, we cancelled our holiday in the outer Hebrides this summer because they are a small community with very limited medical amenities. I truly hope others have done the same. I can totally understand your anger and frustration. People are fucking idiots!

VivaLeBeaver · 04/04/2020 18:30

Yanbu.

It happened in Italy as well. People, fled the more virus stricken north and went south.

In the U.K. second home owners have gone to Cornwall, etc.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/04/2020 18:32

And the daft thing is if people bring the virus with them they’ll be in a even worse position than if they’d stayed home due to lack of equipment and doctors.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 04/04/2020 18:46

Don’t you have to prove you have medical insurance before you’re treated?

Can’t the health authorities look at the details and say sorry, this is not your local health provider, you’ll have to go home?

Harsh but might ram the point home. Small local hospitals can’t cope at this time of year.

Welcometothequiz · 04/04/2020 18:48

Thats dreadful, people are so thick and selfish

Frenchw1fe · 04/04/2020 18:50

Surely the owners should not be able to rent the property out atm.
Or is it the owners turning up?
My ds,dil and dgs live on the coast in North Wales and after the tourist surge 2 weeks ago I think the welsh government are actively discouraging any holiday makers.

fernsandfeathers · 04/04/2020 18:54

@MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig

Don’t you have to prove you have medical insurance before you’re treated?

No. Nobody is ever denied treatment even if they don't have any insurance. And I don't think hospitals declining to treat would be legal either.

Oh ok. Wasn’t sure how it worked. Pity. Grin

BorrestGump · 04/04/2020 18:57

I live in a remote tourist hot spot too. Every holiday home is full and the incomers are brazenly driving around and walking around because they are apparently immune and exempt from any blanket requests not to travel!

I don't really object if they stay indoors but it's this we're on holiday attitude when the locals are looking at their own income and possible business being decimated so, threat of illness/death aside, we are facing financial ruin/our futures burning while these feckers fiddle! It is crass of them to be holidaying at this time.

fernsandfeathers · 04/04/2020 18:57

@Frenchw1fe

On the island where I live it's mostly owners but the towns close to us on the mainland have just had an order (starting tomorrow) to close all hotels/motels/Airbnb's etc because they were all full too.

I have an immunocompromised son so I really get the fear. But we just don't have the healthcare for it. One of the local hospitals didn't have a doctor working who could incubate so he had to get the ambulance man to show him how to do it.

I have friends working in the local hospital, they're at breakdown point, over worked as so many have quit and hardly any PPE gear. They're terrified. And we aren't really anywhere near our peak yet. Sad

YANBU, it is ridiculously selfish. I think some people are just selfish and stupid, but some genuinely believe that they are above all of this. There is an 'influencer' who after lockdown travelled from her permanent residence in London, to her parents house, and then to Cornwall to meet her boyfriend who had flown back from where he lives in LA, another hotspot. She was then moaning about people not adhering to the 'rules', erm...so, so, so, selfish.

fernsandfeathers · 04/04/2020 19:06

I'm honestly struggling with how selfish people are being. I thought better of most people, especially people I know that are coming back here.

My brother died this week, I would love nothing more than to go back to the UK to support my Dad but I won't but I'm not a selfish asshole.

YANBU.

My 75 yo father and his DP who has COPD live in Pembrokeshire, which has 4 ICU beds for the whole county. He says it's like the normal Easter holidays there at the moment. There's a lot of anger towards the second homers who have gone there.

DM has in-laws who've all buggered off to their holiday homes in Pembs. But "it's okay as their family is from there" Angry

Frenchw1fe · 04/04/2020 19:50

@fernsandfeathers so sorry about your brother. My 56 year old cousin died on Wednesday and my dm cannot go to the funeral.

The selfish attitude of some people is unbelievable.
My 8 year old dgs seems to have a better attitude than some adults. It was his birthday yesterday and he told me on FaceTime that he would like a lion king party in summer when he sees us.
