Smoking and Queuing

Was in a supermarket queue this morning a little over 20 minutes. It was snaking down the side of the store beyond the 'theme park' barrier system and down a street. Everyone was 'distancing' a reasonable amount. The lady in front of me was producing huge atomic fumes from a vaping stick thingy and the man behind me was chain smoking roll ups. I had nowhere to go. If I hadn't have been getting a couple of items for my next door neighbour I would have walked away.

I daren't say anything because we were outside - just thought it was rude to smoke on top of a captive audience.

I also thought the protocol was to shop alone? Many shoppers were in pairs/couples? My daughter saw this being enforced in a different supermarket yesterday but in this one no one was batting an eye lid - there were far more people in the supermarket than was necessary because of all the extra 'paired' people.

It would be better if all places followed government guidance to avoid confusion.

I smoke but I wouldn’t smoke if I was in a queue. Might have a quick vape though

CorianderLord · 03/04/2020 11:27

I don't think the vaping is too bad but the cigarettes are a massive no right now. And I'm an ex smoker.

I think if you're queueing outside a supermarket you should probably treat it as if you're already inside. People can't move away in the same way we're used to and some vulnerable people are still going shopping.
I'm an asthmatic and still working (mild asthma and under control without a preventive) so would hate having to queue with a smoker nearby and not being able to avoid it. And I'm not sure vapes are much better, they may be better for the smokers health than a cigarette but my health would still be better without it as a complete non-smoker. They can also be very fragrant and off putting in close proximity. I'd like to hope most smokers can manage standing in line for 20 minutes without smoking anything.

Im a smoker and would never smoke while stuck in a queue. I dont even take it out with me, it stays at home.

Applejaxx · 03/04/2020 11:45

I had this happen yesterday. Outside Morrison’s some bloke in front of my suddenly decides to light up and blow the fumes in my face. Even with the 2 metre rule in place it was pretty overpowering. We were only queuing for about 20 minutes so you’d think he could have waited till after he’d finished his shopping?

I’ve never smoked, so I really can’t stand the smell and the way it makes my chest go all right.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 03/04/2020 11:47

Would rather the small cloud from a cigarette than the huge bloody mass from an e-cig! But both should be banned from the queue.

UnfinishedSymphon · 03/04/2020 11:49

Probably the same ignorant gits that smoke in bus shelters

Sexnotgender · 03/04/2020 12:34

Both are revolting. Absolutely no need to smoke in a 20 minute queue whilst in close proximity to other people.

MaggieFS · 03/04/2020 13:32

I had exactly this situation outside a Sainsbury's Local this morning. Couple two behind me in the queue started smoking cigarettes and the wind was blowing right down the queue. I'm pregnant and particularly sensitive to it at the moment. I just kept my head down but I wish I'd had the nerve to say something. It's so antisocial.

hellsbellsmelons · 03/04/2020 13:49

I'm a smoker. People in front of me were smoking when queuing the other day.
I thought 'I could do with a ciggie right now' but no way would I smoke while queuing.
It's not fair on others at all.
People can surely manage 20 minutes without needing to inflict their smoke on to others!

I live in a quiet residential road. A couple of nights ago a woman pulled up opposite our house in her car with the window down, talking very loudly on her mobile. It was because she was so loud that we noticed her. My DH wondered what she was doing and I said she must be answering her phone - quite rightly not driving at the same time. Then she lit up a cigarette and continued talking loudly until she had smoked it all. Then she casually tossed her cigarette butt in the middle of our road Confused.

I must say I found that to be really repulsive. Why the fuck would we want her possible coronavirus in our street??? I did contemplate going out and tossing it back at her - but that itself would be a risk and I would probably have been sworn at or worse.

What is it with people these days??? Angry

Samcro · 03/04/2020 15:01

i saw some twat vaping in the queue the other day. I am a smoker and wouldn't dream of smoking in a queue and would be annoyed if someone was doing it/or vaping. its selfish as people can't move.
