To not want to start new job next week?

My role is classed as key worker - education provision of sorts. The company I’ve been working for has closed for the time being (handed my notice in before all this happened) but the company I’m starting with next week are carrying on as normal.

Social distancing is impossible due to the nature of the role - I will have to be sat in a car with other workers and children/teens and also working in close proximity all day. I know key workers are supposed to go about their jobs as usual but most workplaces have put social distancing measures in place where possible. AIBU to not want to take the risk right now?

My child will go to her dads when I am working (and he has a newborn baby) so I feel like I’m bringing the risk back to others. I could just about afford to not work for the next couple of months if they let me push my start date back but I feel this would be frowned upon and might potentially lose my job. What would you do?

Ring and speak to them. They may allow you to push it back a month or two. We were supposed to have someone new start with us the week the schools closed. I was pleased when she phoned and asked could it be delayed. The last thing I needed was to be training a new person at that time. Good luck OP

Thanks @OldEvilOwl I would like to think that’s the case but think they need people now Sad
