DUP councillor blames coronavirus on abortion legalisation and same-sex marriage

The coronavirus outbreak is God’s judgment for legalising abortion and same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland, a DUP councillor has claimed.

John Carson, from Ballymena, County Antrim, wrote a public Facebook post on Tuesday comparing himself to the biblical figure of Noah for warning people about the divine consequences of abortion reform.

The DUP has distanced itself from the comments, although the party opposed new laws making terminations easier in the first 24 weeks.

Mr Carson said: ‘I said when abortion was legalised that our nation would be judged by God because of its departure from his word and the legalisation of the murder of the unborn child as well as same-sex marriage.

‘I was laughed at and mocked by some but as I said at the time, they laughed at Noah until the rain started.

Asked why a change to laws in Northern Ireland would create a virus in China, he said: ‘God works in mysterious ways.’

He later added: ‘They laughed and mocked my Saviour too, but some day soon their laughs will turn to screams.’ !!!

FUCK THE DUP

@lazylinguist - haha the choice of what school to apply to provided you have enough money to buy a house in the catchment area of a decent state school.

Absurd.

Brahumbug · 03/04/2020 11:45

As Christopher Hitchens said, good people will do good things and bad people will do bad things, but to get a good person to do evil you need religion.

ocarinan · 03/04/2020 11:47

So throughout the world people are being murdered, raped and sold into slavery on a daily basis but it's people getting married that makes God decide to send a disease... 5000 miles away.

Asked why a change to laws in Northern Ireland would create a virus in China, he said: ‘God works in mysterious ways.’

Ah, well that explains it. Hmm

AmericanHousewifeFan · 03/04/2020 11:49

@lazylinguist I agree 100%

@JassyRadlett I am displeased with what has happened in Northern Ireland so I shall send this plague to... China. Grin Grin

GODS TO DO LIST:

Smite people who abuse children - Nope
Sort people who mutilate children's genitals - Nah
Help the Rohingya - Maybe tomorrow
Deal with NI - Yay, I'll send a plague to the whole world (months before the bill is passed)

lazylinguist · 03/04/2020 12:18

More absurd than having your choice of school dictated not even by which deity you believe in, but by the peculiar details of how your particular sect has historically gone about worshipping the very same deity that the other people also worship. Ok then, but that sounds pretty absurd to me.

There's nothing inherently 'absurd' about being able to buy better goods, services or surroundings by having more money and choosing where to live. After all, it applies to pretty much every other thing in life as well as education. Inherently unfair yes, absurd no.

The solution to that is trying to make all schools as good as they can be (if we ever get a government that enables this), and giving people the choice to apply to which ever school they want, regardless of their faith or lack of it, and regardless of their ability to get through a one-off test by being clever ir being tutored. Banning religious schools and grammar schools would be a good start.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 03/04/2020 12:24

He got voted because people think the same way

ErrolTheDragon · 03/04/2020 12:25

And just to maintain my mysteriousness, I'll make it particularly bad for older people and for men ie those for whom abortion services are irrelevant.

Piglet89 · 03/04/2020 13:20

@lazylinguist it is utterly absurd that people would move house to get their kids into the right school.

That’s a society run by a government whose education policies have driven more and more social inequality. It is so incredibly unfair and immoral. At least Northern Ireland doesn’t have that.

But, more widely, I can see we fundamentally disagree about the merit or otherwise of grammar schools so our viewpoints will never align.

lazylinguist · 03/04/2020 14:30

Indeed. I went to a grammar school myself, but during my 25 years of teaching I have realised that segregating children into different schools according to (a momentary snapshot of) academic ability or according to religious faith is neither fair nor moral.

malonybalony · 03/04/2020 19:24

The arsewipe said he's been misinterpreted. How the fuck can you misinterpret laughs turn to screams?

I’m old enough to remember very similar things being said about HIV being sent to punish the Gays....

It was the lovely iam paisley himself who started save ulster from sodomy iirc

pointythings · 03/04/2020 20:51

lazylinguist well said. I would go further and say that as an atheist, I accord people my respect based on their actions - towards me and towards the world around them. On that score, this man and much of the DUP scores nul points with me.

On the other hand I have many friends of all manner of faiths. They are my friends because they are decent, caring human beings and act accordingly.

malonybalony · 04/04/2020 14:34

He;s issued an apology.

"Anyone who knows me will know that l would not intentionally set out to cause hurt or offence to anyone and if l did then for that l humbly apologise," he said.

"However l will never apologise for my Christian faith and will not be silenced by those that are opposed to the truth of GOD'S word."

So basically, sorry not sorry

OP posts:
CheriLittlebottom · 04/04/2020 15:06

Ah the classic "I'm sorry you feel offended".

StoneofDestiny · 04/04/2020 15:27

Sorry, but I meant it

longwayoff · 04/04/2020 15:29

It's the DUP. What else would be say?

ErrolTheDragon · 04/04/2020 15:56

How on earth could anyone be so blinkered as to not realise that what he said wasn't ok?Confused

Though I'm not sure how many people would actually be hurt or 'offended' by what he said as it's so risible.

malonybalony · 04/04/2020 16:58

From looking at his facebook page where the original post has conviniently been taken down a lot of people agree with him

OP posts:
Whoareyoudududu · 04/04/2020 17:07

Many people in NI are still devoutly religious so I can completely see how a nut case like this would be voted in. It wouldn’t wash in the rest of the UK but NI is kind of set apart.

MorganKitten · 04/04/2020 18:20

they laughed at Noah until the rain started

That story is uncomfortable, they were the only people left to repopulate the wold... that’s a lot of incest...

This type of virulent politician often turn out to be sex offenders themselves.

Backfoot · 05/04/2020 17:02

It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up getting caught ina public toilet with a rent boy.

Well, that book did start with just the offspring of cain and Seth, and no mention at all of where their wives appeared from.
