Just that, really.
It's great that people are doing things for others/being considerate, but doesn't posting on Social Media seem a bit boasty?

OP posts:

I had somebody on a local page ask for names and door numbers of sheltered housing so theycould leave soup on a door step and then somebody else started saying well "Jean" lives at number 12... wtaf maybe jean doesn't need soup and she certainly doesn't need her address on facebook, I don't understand the LOOK at us people.

im.hoping by the time I'm old enough to go into a Nursing home ( I'm 46 ) I won't be forced to listen to Vera Lynn ,and reminisce about the war that I was born nearly 30 years after it ended .

Fat chance. about 5 years ago, my mum spent 3 months in a home recovering from a broken leg, as Dad wasn't well enough to look after her at home, and I was working full time so wouldn't have been able to help her get to the toilet, etc.

She had Planet Rock playing on her radio in her room, as the staff kept getting the residents together for sing a longs that included such delights as "Tipperary" and other war time songs.

Most of the other residents were of a similar age to mum, who was born in the last year of the war............

"Virtue Signalling" one of the most insipid, woke phrases I've ever heard in my life

It's not a 'woke' phrase at all Confused

Blobby10 · 03/04/2020 09:58

Another "Thank you" for this thread! I've been called 'harsh' and 'cruel' by family members for not clapping or leaving cakes out and all because I said that I'm sure the ones working in the NHS would rather people were nice all year round! That they didn't go to A & E for a sore finger (for example), didn't waste doctors appointments, didn't abuse hospital staff because they didn't provide a relatives ideal choice of food in an urgent care ward, didn't abuse nurses because their relative didn't make a full recovery from their stroke etc etc.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 03/04/2020 10:11

See that's why I only have a small number of people on my Facebook - because I have no friends I have no time for shit like this. I have unfollowed a few people over the years, rather than block - don't want to offend their finer sensibilities. But Facebook has been fantastic for me recently as my local community group has been keeping everyone up to date with who delivers what, when the recycling is being collected etc. There are few bossy, shouty people trying to tell people how to observe the rules, but I just ignore them.

Pishposhpashy · 03/04/2020 10:15

There was a great thing on twitter the other day when someone claimed their four year old child said "why are people clapping for the NHS when they voted Tory and the Tories have decimated it"

As if a 4 year old said that 😂

Spidey66 · 03/04/2020 10:23

I'm an NHS nurse and I find it embarrassing and condescending. We're not the only ones out there. Bin men are essential during a pandemic but no-one boasts about paying for their lunch do they?

I deactivated my NextDoor account because I got fed up with it all.

Offred2 · 03/04/2020 10:24

100% agree! I was very tempted to comment on the Facebook pages on some Tory voters something along lines of:

“Make sure you don’t clap your hands so hard that you somehow damage them and end up accidentally ticking the Conservative box again next time”

But I resisted, and just muted them for awhile

Offred2 · 03/04/2020 10:29

Not to mention some of these same Tory voters are now going on about how they are raising money for the NHS or supporting some initiative that does this.

Don’t they realise that the best way to ‘raise money’ for the NHS is to vote for a party that values the nhs and then to pay every penny of tax they legally should pay. I guess that for some people quietly paying tax doesn’t seem as glamorous or noteworthy as broadcasting the fact you are giving money to a good cause.

I meant to say 100% agree!

Brilliant!

Yanbu

Ugh

MintyMabel · 03/04/2020 10:51

Another has started a game of naughts and crosses with the postman on a sheet complete with pen. I mean... wtaf.

😂 I actually love this idea! Not to virtue signal, wouldn’t put it on FB, but sounds like something to do to pass the time.

One of our neighbours has put some pictures up on lamp posts as a kind of treasure trail for kids on their daily walk. She posted it in our WhatsApp group to let people know. She says it was a great way to fill her day too. No virtue signalling about it, her post started with “I was bored so.....”

penelopepitstopsgain · 03/04/2020 10:54

I'm reminded of the saying "Integrity is doing the right thing when no one's watching"
I find it so amusing to watch my local whattsapp group try to "outnice" each other and rush to be the first to announce the latest kind initiative - why not just do your own thing and be content?
If someone asks then share but this focus on "look what I'm doing for the crisis" is so nauseating.
Celebrities all rushing to make themselves relevant are another bug bear but many have been slated so have crawled away to devise less obvious tactics no doubt - strange times indeed.

LuvMyBoyz · 03/04/2020 10:57

I deleted FB last night as I couldn’t face the handclapper posts this morning and I realised that I hadn’t liked any posts I’d seen. I agree with OP.

magicstar1 · 03/04/2020 11:00

I keep seeing people delivering boxes of homemade cake to police stations and hospitals. I’m sure they go straight in the bin...who on earth is going to eat them?

MarthasGinYard · 03/04/2020 11:06

'I keep seeing people delivering boxes of homemade cake to police stations and hospitals. I’m sure they go straight in the bin...who on earth is going to eat them?'

Really, I'm glad I'm not on FB it similar as this is truly unbelievable.

And yes, straight in the bin or back yard for the birds.

I bet the VS twats use it as a great photo opportunity.

Makes me shudder

AgeLikeWine · 03/04/2020 11:11

This is one of the very many reasons why I’m not on Facebook and have no intention of joining Facebook...

scaryreading · 03/04/2020 11:42

It is a bit like the parable in the bible with the poor widow and the Pharisees

Giggorata · 03/04/2020 11:48

Not and never have been on faecesbook.... but I do go out and clap for the NHS and key workers.

I know that the NHS needs funds, not applause, but doing this, and reading the news articles about lack of PPE, pressures of patient numbers, etc must stop us taking our NHS for granted, and keep it in the front of our minds for the wonderful jewel in the crown that it is. And who knows? People might think twice about voting for the policies that dismantle, privatise and fragment the NHS.
