*2000 of 500,000 NHS staff tested.
*Germany performing nearly TEN TIMES the number of tests as the UK. despite the WHO saying for weeks and weeks that they key is to “test test test”
*Continuing shortages of basic PPE for health workers (who are being threatened if they speak out)
*Thousands of people still cramming on to public transport, with not one metre let alone 2 metre distance.
*The Government failing to sign up to the EU ventilator scheme.
*Being one of the last Western countries to close schools and implement any kind of lockdown.

I know it’s tough for everyone but this is a level of criminal negligence from the British government. Absolutely shocking.

OP posts:
Blossomad · 02/04/2020 11:55

The reason they keep mentioning Corbyn is that they are post Brexit Trolls with time on their hands imo.

Jux · 02/04/2020 11:55

Every time I read a thread like this, I think "what would it have been like if May had still been in charge?". Then I feel quite glad that things are as they are; at least something's happening. A bit.

CendrillonSings · 02/04/2020 11:59

Why do people keep mentioning Corbyn? It's irrelevant, you lot are obsessed.

Because most of the people moaning on these threads are the same ones who voted for Corbyn the Useless to be Prime Minister right now? It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in their judgement!

Alsohuman · 02/04/2020 11:59

At least we can be grateful that Corbyn is not in charge. It's some comfort to me in this awful time

Very first bloody post, so predictable. It couldn’t be any worse with anyone in charge. Some people are easily comforted.

Blossomad · 02/04/2020 12:00

I have a relative in hospital probably dying from this. I’m not glad that things are “as they are”. The hospital has him sedated and unable to eat and seem to be considering withdrawing treatment. Euthanasia imo

Standrewsschool · 02/04/2020 12:00

I think the reason Corbin has been mentioned is because op is bashing the current government, therefore by default implying that others, such as Corbin could have done better.

cardibach · 02/04/2020 12:00

@Baaaahhhhh there are 4000 beds at NHS Nightingale, not 4000 ventilators as far as I’m aware from BBC reporting...
OP it’s not incompetence, it’s deliberate. Not ordering ventilators from British companies so that those ventilators got sent to other countries. Not joining the EU ventilators scheme, then lying about it (it’s a matter of record they were represented at several meetings, they didn’t ‘miss the email’). Not taking EU financial help. Not ordering tests, but claiming they were doing 10000 Tests per day. They are still don there immunity, just quietly as there was a backlash about letting so many people die...

Genevieva · 02/04/2020 12:01

This isn't a party political issue and I wish people weren't being so divisive. All parties in parliament appear to have been working quite well together on getting the legislation needed through as quickly as they could. It is an example of cooperation after years of division. It is commendable and, while we absolutely need to hold those in charge to account, politically charged swipes are not helpful at this time.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 02/04/2020 12:01

I agree OP

We are doing similar to other countries eg
Italy and Spain. But given we had the benefit of 2 or 3 weeks more time than them and seeing what happened there, and how bad it was, we should have used those weeks to do better than them.

Germany have managed the situation really well through testing. Why are our supplies of PPE so poor? Why are we so slow to test everyone even healthcare workers? Why have we got so few ventilators given the government have passed down the opportunity to get more?

I saw all the comments on the PMs social media last night after his speech and I was so surprised that everyone was saying he was doing an amazing job. We could have done a much better job. Hundreds of people will die, because we didnt do a better job. Why do we have such low expectations? Why aren't we demanding our government test more people and manage it more like the countries who have succeeded in stopping the spread?

MeganBacon · 02/04/2020 12:01

I think they are doing pretty well. Why don't you get yourself elected and see if you can do better next time?

Genevieva · 02/04/2020 12:01

@cardibach, there are 500 ventilators in NHS Nightingale at this time.

clareOclareO · 02/04/2020 12:02

I think the reason Corbin has been mentioned is because op is bashing the current government, therefore by default implying that others, such as Corbin could have done better.

Exactly. We all know what we don't like, so maybe someone can offer practical solutions that are realistic and affordable? We all know there need to be more tests, more PPE, but how do we get there?

Saying "Germany does this" or "China did that" is irrelevant. How are they doing these things and how can we?

Blossomad · 02/04/2020 12:02

CendrillonSings

You have no idea who anyone has voted for and if you think that attacking Labour is more important than effective healthcare FOR ALL no matter who they voted for in the middle of a pandemic you are seriously messed up. Do you agree that Trump should only offer financial aid to Trump voters?

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 02/04/2020 12:03

And for me, I think it's important to put pressure on our leaders to do a better job. Saying they are shit isnt saying 'I wish Corbyn was in charge', its saying 'I want you to do better'

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 02/04/2020 12:03

The apoligists for this complete shit show of a govt are reprehensible

Agree. The whining 'but...but... Corbyn ...' is pathetic and utterly irrelevant. This government is an incompetent global embarrassment.

I didn't vote Labour, incidentally.

AutumnRose1 · 02/04/2020 12:03

I really apologise if I’m being stupid

I’m still confused that flights from certain places are coming in.

I understand that people have to get home
Medical experts are being flown in

But looking at the list of arrivals into the UK, it’s pretty long. Who is on these flights and why?

And why are citizens being so limited in what they can do when people can fly in to the UK? Is there some essential work going on that I’m missing?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 02/04/2020 12:04

The govt refused to buy adequate PPE In 2016 when they were advised to after a pandemic simulation was run for govt
The simulation planning included the scenario that the virus had a functioning vaccination. The very different current scenario we find ourselves in wasn’t even on the radar. And it was ventilators also flagged as being required in huge, unprecedented, numbers. And no one refused to invest in them, they rather came to the, probably correct, conclusion that buying hundreds of millions of pounds worth, and storing, of ventilators and PPE that was not needed at the time (and might never have been) would have very little support from parliament wider government or the general public.

CendrillonSings · 02/04/2020 12:04

It couldn’t be any worse with anyone in charge.

As so often, the public disagrees with you - now by almost unprecedented margins Grin

"therefore by default implying that others, such as Corbin could have done better."

Nope
Many people who think Boris is a screwup didn't want Corbyn either

The party in govt has made some cockups and has also run down NHS and PHE capabilities over the last 10 years

They need to be called to account

I soon got fed up with the Labour govt blaming Thatcher & Major for years after they had been in power
and Corbyn wasn't PM for one day, never mind 18 years !

Greggers2017 · 02/04/2020 12:04

How can anybody criticise the government? There has never been anything like this before so we have nothing to compare it too, have to do not?
You can not compare to other countries as every country does things differently.
I am getting sick to death of people criticising Boris, and no I am not a Tory voter. What people need to remember is this has never happened before. He's doing the best he can in a shitty situation and if tests aren't getting there quickly enough it isn't his fault personally. I'm also NHS.

GlassOfPort · 02/04/2020 12:05

We are in a crisis, is it too much to ask that we all just do our best? Or is it a better idea to spit and snarl at the people who are trying to manage the disaster

I am doing my best. I am staying at home and keeping my family there. I have repeatedly donated to my local foodbank. I fight dangerous disinformation (hot drinks can kill the virus etc) wherever I see it.

I am not expecting this government to be perfect. I am expecting it to be honest though. Confusion can be forgiven, but I agree with others that lying is inexcusable.

Blossomad · 02/04/2020 12:05

OoohTheStatsDontLie

The reason Boris has only positive messages on his social media is that most people are blocked from commenting on his page. He only allows positive comments. Tory HQ were also paying people to post positive comments about him on social media, something they are planning to expand. With that and lock down we are nearer to communism than we ever have been under Labour imo

Goingunderground2 · 02/04/2020 12:05

The thing is testing takes infrastructure if we've not got it will take time.

Goingunderground2 · 02/04/2020 12:06

The thing is testing takes infrastructure if we've not got it will take time.

Oh and I think it is vital tests are accurate otherwise it's just a waste of money.

Genevieva · 02/04/2020 12:06

PPE also has a shelf life and electronic equipment needs annual testing.
