grammar lesson: annoying or helpful?

Possessive pronouns don't need apostrophes.

"It's" with an apostrophe can only ever mean "it is" or "it has".
"Who's" can only ever mean "who is" or "who has".

e.g: "Who's taken my lunch?"
but "Whose lunch is this? Your lunch, its lunch, hers or theirs?"

I never correct people, but sometimes I practise explaining things concisely, and so I'm so lonely and fed up with the lockdown that I'm ready to risk a pasting on AIBU. Do you think it's a good explanation, or are you annoyed that anyone should talk about something so trivial during a crisis? Or both? Or would you do it better?

OP posts:
OscarWildesCat · 02/04/2020 11:01

I like grammar OP, I correct it in my head a lot when reading posts, you go for it Grin

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 02/04/2020 11:02

YANBU

Grammar? It's the difference between Knowing your shit and Knowing you're shit Grin

suggestionsplease1 · 02/04/2020 11:04

I wouldn't risk it!

EyUpDuck12 · 02/04/2020 11:07

The one that annoys me the most on here is ect instead of etc!!! I know it's not grammar, I just thought you might understand my rage at this 🤣🤣🤣

EdithHope · 02/04/2020 11:08

"Knowing your shit and Knowing you're shit" Grin

Nice.

OP can you do one for of/ve (have)? I should of drives me bonkers.

Bibijayne · 02/04/2020 11:09

That is a good, succinct explanation.

EyeShipMiceElf · 02/04/2020 11:11

I always explain the use of the word ‘of’ to children at the school I work in as ‘pretend you didn’t ‘should of’ gone to the shops, but you actually really went. Would you say ‘yes I of been to the shops?’ Or would you say ‘yes I have been to the shops?’

Sometimes they seem to understand, I’ll keep trying till they all do Grin

ArtisanPopcorn · 02/04/2020 11:50

Helpful, more please!

justanotherneighinparadise · 02/04/2020 11:52

My grammar is dire. I need lessons to help my seven year old!!

justanotherneighinparadise · 02/04/2020 11:57

Can you explain when it’s ‘xxxxx and me’ instead of ‘xxxxxxx and I’.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 02/04/2020 11:59

Helpful.

If I made a grammatical error, I would prefer someone to point it out so that I don't make the same mistake in the future.

I think people can become quite defensive when you point out errors because of their insecurities. So, if you are going to let people know, perhaps just be thoughtful about your wording.

zigaziga · 02/04/2020 12:02

The one that annoys me more is plurals being given a ‘s.

“There are so many little Olivia’s and Sophie’s and Amelia’s these days!”

As long as you keep your explanations on this thread and don't rampage around MN with your red pen.

There is a sign on the way up to my office that says "All attendee's are kindly asked to wait in the waiting room". It has irritated me for three years and eight months now. I suspect it is only still there because I have said it irritates me so much. I can't access the locked noticeboard it's in, otherwise I would have sorted it myself long ago.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 02/04/2020 12:12

I think people get hacked off if the correction is within a post - problem is that having it in a separate thread, the people that might benefit are less likely to see it.
Personally if I'm reading through, spelling/punctuating is irritating me and someone else has pointed out the correction, small moment of joy and/or relief - I am not alone!
A pet spelling hate is stationery/stationary E is for Envelopes.

The one that annoys me the most on here is ect instead of etc

As an ex-psychiatric nurse who used to work in the ECT dept, it confuses the fuck out of me.

Guardsman18 · 02/04/2020 12:14

I think I can answer the me/I one!

If you can use we - we went to the shop, then it's Guards and I and if it's us - it's all about us, then it's me and Guards.

I think! Happy to be corrected and I probably haven't explained properly. Long time since I was in school!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 02/04/2020 12:14

Oh, and yes, I liked your explanation :) I like my sweary grammar cup too:

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 02/04/2020 12:15

Local post office POST OFFICE sub post office admittedly, has the window covered in huge window poster outlining the variety of stock lines.
Including Stationary. I had to stop using it as click and collect point, it was too irritating.

LangSpartacusCleg · 02/04/2020 12:17

It is a good explanation.

And you should share it with anyone you deem in need of a lesson.

AnneJeanne · 02/04/2020 12:19

I love the sweary grammar cup!
