Am I overreacting?

I need some advice, so this is the situation:

I opened Instagram yesterday when I suddenly noticed that I was added to a group chat. I asked why I was added to the chat and I started talking. Everyone else in the group knew each other but they said they randomly added me. (I knew 2 people in the group vaguely but never met or talked). We had a few jokes / banter, which was all fine, until I was told to “show your face Krishna”. I’m Indian as well, so I asked why this was said. Again, the same person said “Krishna, show your face”. I wouldn’t have reacted in this way if I knew the people, but I didn’t, and they didn’t know me. They also referred to me as being part of the “curry clan” (they were white btw).

I was incensed and angry, so I haven’t messaged since, thinking about what to say. AIBU, or is it normal to have reacted in this way. Are they racist? I think so, but I need your help!

No you're not overreacting at all and yes they're racist. It's very weird that they added you like that, do you think they targeted you for that reason and for their own entertainment? Seems odd otherwise given that they don't actually know you. I'd probably block them all and move on, but wouldn't blame you at all for wanting to call them out on it, it's so unacceptable. I'm not sure how the chats work on Instagram but is there any way of reporting it/them?

I don't understand why you would join a group chat of strangers in the first place tbh.

You can report them, but nothing will happen. I don’t want to threaten them or anything, but apart from that, there’s nothing else I can do since no one in the chat knows me. I’m pretty sure they added me for their own entertainment, but I’m used to it tbh. :(

Why do you torture yourself by not keeping you instagram private and accepting groups of people you don't know?

I am really and truly sorry that this has happened and it has upset you so much. Try and be more careful online. We drill this into our kids; as an (I assume) adult, you also need to exercise caution.

YANBU. They sound like ignorant racists with too much time on their hands. Block them and move on and remind yourself that most people are not like this. So sorry you have had this experience.

Leave and block But (and I know I would)
If you want to retort - something on the lines of

{group name} so big
{group name} so clever

then leave and block - don't even try to see their response. Anyone in the group with any decency will know what you mean and you can't teach stupid
