Oh god i give up ! I meant what it means in terms on how it is used . For example is it used in a cutesy way ? Ironically for things that arent really small etc
Well anyway i couldnt care less if you think i am genuine or not i got my answer and i will continue to use mumsnet for all the questions i have regarding british culture and customs Wink

@Babdoc I'm a Geordie and went to Dundee medical school. Left in 86

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 22:06

Why is it so hard to believe that I live in an area that doesn’t use the word wee. That’s the strangest thing. Other than to use the toilet.

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 22:09

@Chiyo666 I don't care WHERE in the UK you live, no way have you never heard the word 'wee' used (to describe something small,) in FIFTEEN YEARS of living here.

But I haven’t! I also have never heard the word boak, bairn or cob. These are all words I’ve learnt on mumsnet and from watching tv. I’m sure there are words here that you don’t hear too.

SharonasCorona · 30/03/2020 22:14

People are on mumsnet are quite anti foreigner OP just ignore them. I’ve lived here for 15 years and have not heard it.

As a ‘foreigner’, (I.e. immigrant) I don’t agree in this instance. The OP probably isn’t foreign, and probably has big hands as opposed to wee hands.

And OP you have shit Google skills if you didn’t know the word is Scottish. The very FIRST page in Google says ‘wee- adjective - Scottish. little. ‘When I was just a wee bairn.’

meditereb · 30/03/2020 22:21

I am foreigner the clue is in the name !! I havent google it ... anyway off to bed now busy day tomorrowGrinGrin

Oh dear @meditereb
I’m so sorry that you’ve had such vitriol on this thread. I quite understand what you mean.
My parents are Polish and have been in UK for decades. I still get asked by my mum what certain words and phrases mean. I speak French quite well but I’m always finding words and phrases that I don’t understand.
I think it’s best that you walk away from this, mainly intolerant thread.
Good wishes 💐
As to posters who say ‘ just google’ or ‘ don’t be goady’ maybe the poster was just trying connect and be friendly in a,clearly, hostile environment.

JuliaDomna · 30/03/2020 22:32

I starting reading this thread this morning and it felt like a warm blanket. It reminded me of my DM who died many years ago and happy years living in Lothian. I love the Scottish Language/Dialect. I have logged on this evening and the thread has deteriorated as so many on MN do to arguing and trading insults It's such a pity. I know we are all anxious and worried about COVID-19 but please think before you post a message. It would be nice to have somewhere pleasant to retreat to in these difficult times.

Shimy · 30/03/2020 22:33

You're the one who STARTED it. You don't just get to bail, because people aren't saying what you want to hear. Light the touchpaper and then run eh? How sneaky and cowardly.

Goodness! All this over the word ‘wee’. You really need to step back from the computer.

JuliaDomna · 30/03/2020 22:42

Shimy I totally agree. So much overreaction .

amusedbush · 30/03/2020 22:46

It's one thing to ask about a word you're unfamiliar with but quite another to repeatedly call it annoying and then get pissy and defensive.

I'm Scottish and it's a completely bog standard word - I use it all the time and don't even notice. I'm really surprised you've been in the UK for so long and you've never heard it.

LadyMadderRose · 30/03/2020 23:02

You're the one who STARTED it. You don't just get to bail, because people aren't saying what you want to hear.

Yes you do - it’s an anonymous forum and you can bail whenever you like. It might annoy some people if someone starts a thread and then doesn’t come back or flounces or whatever, but are you really telling OP she’s forbidden from leaving and must continue to post? Confused

1Morewineplease · 30/03/2020 23:07

@amusedbush
She that it was annoying to her that she didn’t know the word, not that the word itself is annoying.
As I said in my previous post ... my parents have lived in the UK for decades and I still get asked what various words and turn of phrases mean.
Oh my days! 🙄

She that it was annoying to her that she didn’t know the word, not that the word itself is annoying.

Er no, OP says ’Is it suppose to be cute ? I just find it annoying sorry if thats offensive’

It’s pretty clear she finds the word annoying @1Morewineplease

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 23:15

amusedbush · 30/03/2020 23:28

@1Morewineplease

Exactly as SharonasCorona said - the OP clearly said that she finds the word annoying.

So less of the eyerolling...

meditereb · 31/03/2020 05:36

Yes i find it annoying when used 5 times in the same sentence the same way i find "she was like" and litterally (when is not really litterally) annoying .
As i said previously i did not know it was a dialect . I understand how some people found it offensive but as i said i was completely ignorant regarding the origins of the word . I dont have a hidden agenda against scotish people i never met any and i have not even been there
If you find that hard to believe and thibk i was purposeful being offensive i am sorry it must be hard going through live thinking like that
