What does it mean ? Why is used for everything ?

StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 20:40

Chill yer wee boots. Your sweeping generalisations must tire you out.

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 20:41

I haven’t made any generalisations Grin

Are all northern people really thick like they say? (That’s a Generalisation, incase you were wondering)

StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 20:42

@meditereb not particularly I just find it funny that you find a word so annoying that you started a thread of MN about users of a completely different platform using it

meditereb · 30/03/2020 20:44

I didnt even know it was a dialect i have seen it "written" down a lot on instagram stories
I genually did not know it was offensive to ask this .

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 20:45

You said you've never lived in the north because you can't process their accents - which Northern accent would that be? Aberdonian? Glasgewian? Mackem? Geordie? Liverpudlian?

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 20:46

Pretty much all of them. The elongated vowels don’t exist in my language and my brain just doesnt process them.

StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 20:47

It's not 'offensive' that you asked it ffs. It's the weird that you came onto mn posted a 2 line OP then complained that Instagram influencers were using it.

Almost as if you were being goady and not curious

meditereb · 30/03/2020 20:47

@StoorieHoose you might find it hard to understand but i found musment very useful since i moved here particularly since i had kids . I always ask questions about what is the norm and what is generally accepted as normal behaviour here . If i was left to my devices i would have offended alot of people in real life as well as here

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 20:48

So you can process the more southern accents? West country? Brummie?

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 20:51

Yes because I moved to a southern area as a child and the sounds are more similar to my mother language. Also, the rhythm of the language makes a big difference.
Brummie? I only heard Ozzy, but I think many people can’t understand him Grin

derxa · 30/03/2020 20:59

Sorry if offended anyone ! I am an exoat here didnt know it was scottish !! Just saw alot of instagramers using it and i was honestly wondering what it is !! It seemed abit annoying Oh give over Grin

GottenGottenGotten · 30/03/2020 21:08

How is it even possible to be annoyed by people using their native dialect

Have you never seen the conversations on here about the word 'gotten'? Commonly used in many areas of the UK, but we regularly get accused of using Americanisms when it absolutely isn't.

Chiyo666 · 30/03/2020 21:10

Yes there are threads on here all the time about “what words annoy you!”

isabellerossignol · 30/03/2020 21:11

Oh yes, indeed. Also 'Santa', and celebrating Halloween Grin

StoorieHoose · 30/03/2020 21:13

Dont even mention outwith!

NellVarnish · 30/03/2020 21:16

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius yeah it was a reanimate that your granny folded up neatly in her bag, but I liked a PP’s granny calling it a rainy bunnet Grin

Also autocarrot Grin

GottenGottenGotten · 30/03/2020 21:16

I've found my tribe Grin

TheCanterburyWhales · 30/03/2020 21:16

OP, the wee forensic linguist in me says you're not really convincing anyone with the faux mistakes you're scattergunning your posts with now.
It was good of the "maybe English isn't her first language" posters to give you the idea though.

NellVarnish · 30/03/2020 21:19

Mockers that clip was funny, Ewan McGregor was brilliant in that film.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/03/2020 21:45

I have to be honest - autocarrot is a joke I nicked.

meditereb · 30/03/2020 21:46

@TheCanterburyWhales seriously ? I dont think you would have the time but if you look through my old posts i am sure i mentioned not being from here a couple of times

OP posts:
SharonasCorona · 30/03/2020 21:55

OP, you're disingenuous at best and a liar at worst. You say you know the word means small but posted to ask 'what does it mean'.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/03/2020 21:59

I think the south has less colloquial(?) words then the north? No, but the southern colloquial words just seem normal to you. Also southern could mean London, the Cotswolds or Cornwall - all very different.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/03/2020 22:00

Or Reading, Sussex, Kent.... I could go on.

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 22:02

@Chiyo666

People are on mumsnet are quite anti foreigner OP just ignore them. I’ve lived here for 15 years and have not heard it.

ODFOD. Hmm

And stop projecting your issues onto people who don't deserve it.

Also, you have never heard anyone use the word 'wee' in 15 years of living in the UK? Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

@meditereb

Sorry if offended anyone ! I am an expat here and have only been here 7 years, and didn't know it was scottish !! Just saw a lot of instagrammers using it and i was honestly wondering what it is !! It seemed a bit annoying.

Well I am sure all the millions of British people who use the word WEE are SO SORRY to be SO ANNOYING! Hmm

Seriously, is this your contribution to this forum? To tell us how annoying our regional dialect is?! Words fail me, seriously! Confused

I literally cannot imagine emigrating to another country, and then telling people how annoying the way the speak is. Bet you don't say anything to them in real life! Hmm (That's if you ARE an ex-pat, and you're not just saying you are because someone gave you the idea much earlier in the thread.) Wink
