To say 10 is too young for Tiktok?

I have a friend who has a 10 year old DD, in Y6. She has today, after much nagging I’m sure, decided to let her DD have TikTok.

As far as I am aware TikTok is rated 13+. Not only is it a breach of the platform’s rules, but imo it’s highly inappropriate for a 10 yo. I would never tell her how to raise her DD but I think she’s being irresponsible letting her have it. I also think it’s a bit rich since she gave me a long patronising judgy lecture about me letting 12 yo DS watch Father Ted. As far as I’m concerned Father Ted is pretty gentle, and at least I know what the content is. TikTok on the other hand is full of god knows what.

Am I wrong? AIBU?

Not much you can do as not your DD.
However, I do agree.... Tiktok is full of swearing and provocative dancing. My kids have only just got it at 13 and 14. But I still have the restricted mode ticked on their apps...this filters some but not all of the more adult videos.

Tiktok is full of swearing and provocative dancing.

It's much worse than that. Has your friend actually used the app herself?

I posted a couple of days ago about my 12 year old's history teacher using TicTok for teaching purposes...After a ridiculous email chain I forwarded it to the District Superintendent. Needless to say he no longer has a job

I don’t know how familiar she is with it tbh. She says it’s her DD’s world so she has to learn to navigate it. Not sure TikTok at 10 would be my chosen time or way of inducting her into the online world But then she’s not my kid. I just find it rather odd that she should take exception to Father Ted while allowing a primary school DC loose on TikTok. Oh well, takes all sorts I guess, I just wondered if it’s me being an old fart. DS has asked for it in the past and I have refused.

The whole wide world is TikToking at the moment ... literally every bored celebrity! I love it - it's not for primary ages kids though

I’ve said no to my 9 and 19 year old boys and they’re going mad.

I haven’t looked into it too much but dh did some investigating and said it’s awful.

CodenameVillanelle · 29/03/2020 21:37

You've said no to your 19 year old??

My 11 year old has tiktok. I have it on my phone to check what he's doing and I've seen the kind of stuff that's on there and I haven't seen anything terrible.

PerfectPenquins · 29/03/2020 21:41

The platforms minimum age is 13 so why on earth are parents allowing younger kids to use it, just say no its not hard your just teaching them to lie and be deceptive

That doesn't mean he hasn't or won't see something terrible. He is 11. Get him off it. It's an awful app that exposes children to horrific content.

jmscp · 29/03/2020 21:45

There's an "influencer" I follow that has made her 6 YEAR OLD an account.

The mind fucking boggles.

I would suggest you haven't been on there enough if you haven't seen anything terrible yet.
There is SO much inappropriate content on there..

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/07/2020 23:26

I always assume people who let their children onto these types of apps don't use them themselves, so they don't see what's wrong with them. Or have briefly looked & seen a few cringey dancing videos & thought its a bit of fun..

tiredanddangerous · 09/07/2020 23:26

My 10 year old has been asking for it because all her friends have it. No chance.
