I felt like it would be nice to see a normal MN debate on AIBU this evening so am I? Gets all the fat off and leaves your mince nice and clean. Halo

I put raw mince in a colander and rinse it with warm water from the tap. But i rinse all my meats 🤷🏽‍♀️

k1233 · 30/03/2020 09:02

Why not just buy the heart smart 5% fat mince?

TheoneandObi · 30/03/2020 22:23

My mum used to. But she is the world's worst cook

SharonasCorona · 30/03/2020 22:55

I rinse all meat too, including chicken SHOCK
HORROR.

OxanaVorontsova · 30/03/2020 23:01

I do when I'm making this Tom Kerridge lasagne and it does work 'Place the mince in a colander and rinse under running water. This sounds like an odd thing to do but it helps break it down and separate it into smaller pieces.'

Shouldershrugger · 30/03/2020 23:42

Pardon my ignorance, but what's so wrong about washing meats? Genuine question. Not trying to be an arsehole.

Dyrne · 31/03/2020 08:00

KRAmum Where to start?

First, if you rinse raw meat you’re splashing the bacteria everywhere around your kitchen. You’re more likely to spread small droplets of the nasty stuff that will then land on your sink, hands, countertops etc: www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/never-wash-raw-chicken/

In addition, you’re washing fat, oil and grease down the drain. Enough people doing this just adds to the problem down in the sewers where it collects and solidifies, causing blocked drains and sewage flooding problems.

flirtygirl · 31/03/2020 08:24

If you rinse meat then you wash your sink after. Not exactly rocket science. Also don't splash it around and wash your hands after.

What an excuse to not wash meat. People should be washing their sinks anyway and should make sure they wash them after.

If you want to rinse then rinse, if you don't then don't.

Some cultures do not eat meat that has not been washed, others do not eat without rinsing because of excess blood, chlorine and other chemicals, hence the rinsing.

If people rinse something and spread bacteria around, then they are stupid and disgusting. Ie it's not the rinsing that's the problem. It's like saying don't have a bath as the bath gets dirty. Surely that's why you wash it after.

flirtygirl · 31/03/2020 08:26

Fat bergs may be a problem but most people I know pour hot water down their sink whilst cleaning it. But no idea if that helps fat bergs or not.

DinosaurOfFire · 31/03/2020 08:30

@RoomR0613 I still do the conveyor belt game when I remember, I wonder how it would work at the moment 🤔

Stickybeaksid · 31/03/2020 08:36

@flirtygirl if you pour hot water down the sink after the fat it just washes it down the drain where it will eventually solidify into a fat berg. It’s environmentally irresponsible. In relation to washing meat I saw a video before by the Irish health and safety authority where it showed under a uv light the splash back from washing raw meat. There were splashes of water everywhere. It would make you think twice about doing it.

mumwon · 31/03/2020 08:54

what chlorine? We are in UK -if you cook mince all bugs are dead & water from tap contains other chemicals (if you want to be fanatic about that) & lets not start talking about bottled water...

Dyrne · 31/03/2020 09:40

flirtygirl it’s not just the sink - droplets of bacteria will be flying everywhere, you just won’t be able to see them. That’s the point.

And as PP said, hot water doesn’t do anything to help with Fatbergs.

karala · 31/03/2020 09:42

I miss threads like rinsing mince - and the cube of poo and hamster stew.

obviously I have been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth

Dyrne · 31/03/2020 09:47

Also why are you calling it an “excuse” to not wash meat like it’s filthy not to? The Food Safety organisations say not to rinse meat...

You’ve got a point with religion - In Islam you don’t need to do it, with Judaism you do apparently; to which I’d just say wear an apron that’s going to get cleaned immediately and then clean the area around the sink as well...

Stickybeaksid · 31/03/2020 09:59

@karala hamster stew, I’d forgotten about that thread😂

karala · 31/03/2020 10:02

stickybeaksid them were the days Grin
