To rinse my mince

I felt like it would be nice to see a normal MN debate on AIBU this evening so am I? Gets all the fat off and leaves your mince nice and clean. Halo

You want fat with your mince. It should be a fatty cut. Only a fool would rinse it.

WatchingFromTheWings · 29/03/2020 20:55

My mum always boiled the mince then leave it overnight. The fat would rise to the top, cool, set and then she'd then scrap it off.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 29/03/2020 20:55

I think there’s a sizeable minority of mnetters who just love thinking up pointless tasks to feel superior about doing.

Nope, I don’t rinse my mince, wash chicken or iron bedsheets. Busy work.

Obsidian77 · 29/03/2020 20:55

I rinse my mince, in cold water.

CointreauVersial · 29/03/2020 20:56

Ugh - SIL does this. Fries it off, then sticks it under a tap. Let's just rinse all the flavour and meat juices away, shall we? And then douse the mince in some horrible fake-tomato jar of sauce. Mmmmm.

EatDessertFirst · 29/03/2020 20:56

Rinsing any raw meat is dangerous as it potentially splashes bacteria around the area.

Brown, drain fat off and use. My mum rinses cooked mince with boiling water and it has literally no flavour afterwards.

opticaldelusion · 29/03/2020 20:56

FFS. Fat gives flavour and a sense of satiation. Why would you get rid of it?

LotsaDo · 29/03/2020 20:56

It depends...YABU to use water, you need to rinse your mince with Dettol to be absolutely sure it's clean.

Neverender · 29/03/2020 20:57

Ewwwww!

AgeLikeWine · 29/03/2020 20:57

WTF? Rinsing mince sounds bizarre. Do you do it before or after cooking?
If before, it’s pointless because it will be cooked at high temperature which will kill any bugs and will render the fat which can be spooned off as required.

If after, it’s a waste because much of the caramelised flavour from the Maillard reaction in the cooking process will be rinsed away.

Tsk I bet you don't even wash your door frames and skirtings.

I soak mine in Milton alongside the strawberries Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/03/2020 20:57

Could always bleach it lol

OneHanded · 29/03/2020 20:59

But you cook both the fat and germs off and drain... your method just splashes both onto other things.

Queenoftheashes · 29/03/2020 20:59

I wipe it with a diluted bleach solution. Even though it’s Quorn.

MissPoldark · 29/03/2020 20:59

I didn’t have a shower this morning, so I gave my mince a quick rinse instead Grin

SharonMitchell · 29/03/2020 20:59

Surely lotsado you soak yours in Zoflora after an overnight bleach

AgeLikeWine · 29/03/2020 20:59

Tom Kerridge advocates roasting mince on a tray to brown it instead of frying, then continue making your cottage pie or whatever as normal. No rinsing required!

donquixotedelamancha · 29/03/2020 21:00

AIBU To rinse my mince

If you have recently done this under a blanket, while your wife was feeding the baby, you need to say sorry and buy her some flowers.

Craftycorvid · 29/03/2020 21:02

Read the title of the thread as ‘rinse your mice’ and was having visions of rodents having a bath. Ok, as you were! More innocent than rinse your minge....Grin

AnotherMurkyDay · 29/03/2020 21:02

No but I drain the fat off

YangShanPo · 29/03/2020 21:03

roasting mince this sounds a bit cheffy.

Showering daily vs strip wash is another classic aibu debate I have been missing. Apparently some MNers can smell the difference.

Does rinsing the mince before cooking not remove all the flavour?
