Wearing disposable gloves to supermarket

Curious to know if I’m being OTT or if others are doing this too?

My logic is that I’m going to be handling lots of dirty surfaces that others have also touched. I don’t want to transfer these to my car. Hence, I wear gloves to do my shop and pack, but remove them before getting back into my car. I also immediately disinfect my shopping and (eg) bank card once I get home.

@Tonyaster You're joking, right?

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:07

I buy mine from our local farm shop and they have loads.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:08

Nope not joking. They remind me not to touch my face.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/03/2020 22:09

Thanks LeGrand Flowers

To enter my local supermarket in Ireland, you queue in the marked out 2 metre distance between people queue, go in when called, you use hand sanitizer, then put on disposable gloves and are given a sanitised trolley. The cashiers are behind Perspex. There are signs everywhere asking you to maintain distance from staff and other shoppers.

I agree/ I've been wearing gloves for the past couple of weeks when shopping. 2 weeks ago, you were offered gloves on the way in, now you have to wear them. Limited numbers of people in supermarkets. Queuing areas are all taped in 2m sections. Aisles are taped as well, as are where you queue when waiting to pay. Big perspex screens between staff and customers at all the bread, meat, fish counters, as well as at the tills. It's eerily quiet at the supermarket, but it definitely feels safer.

And the scarf means I don't have to worry if I cough a bit (i have a persistent cough since flu 5 weeks ago)

Solo · 29/03/2020 22:11

The unreasonable part for me is (was) seeing all the discarded gloves in the car parks. Was carrier bags, now plastic gloves. Another way to kill off wildlife and Mother Earth.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:13

Literally couldn't give a shit about the planet atm. Also people who work with animals or on farms wear them loads anyway.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 22:14

Yep I probably will but you need to not touch your face still

Coffeeandnutrients · 29/03/2020 22:15

Just to add, people are literally trained how to aseptically remove gloves without cross contamination. Unless this has become a new hobby/ obstructions come with the gloves I’m sure most wearing them will end up spreading it from the gloves anyhow.

Coffeeandnutrients · 29/03/2020 22:16

Instructions not obstructions! Bloody autocorrect

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:17

It's very easy to aseptically remove them.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:18

removing gloves

Eckhart · 29/03/2020 22:19

Tonyaster oh yeah! You just reminded me of my original reasoning for keeping my own gloves on.

20viona · 29/03/2020 22:20

Yeah I wore them, made me feel a bit better so don't see the harm.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:20

I don't understand what you mean

SallyWD · 29/03/2020 22:21

I do it and see loads of other people doing it too.

PhilCornwall1 · 29/03/2020 22:22

I think masks and gloves are overkill but people are using them to signal their vigilance and concern about infection risk, and that is understandable

Agreed. I have talked to a medical professional about as I'm high risk, not that I was going to wear any of it, and they said there is no benefit to it. I guess if it makes people feel more comfortable then no harm done.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:24

I think there is increasing evidence that masks are actually quite helpful.

Sunshine1239 · 29/03/2020 22:27

Nah way ott

The vast vast majority will get this and be fine so I am doing nothing extra - maybe if I was in the vulnerable group I’d be more careful but washing ur shopping is way ott

Wash my hands a little more often but I’m not obsessive

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 29/03/2020 22:27

I get mine from places supplying hospitality. But they do seem to be now sold out in most

PhilCornwall1 · 29/03/2020 22:28

I think there is increasing evidence that masks are actually quite helpful.

There is a shed load of "evidence" about everything to do with this effort coming out daily, very often contradictory.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:29

sunshine I'm not worried about getting it - tbh I think I may have had it already - but please wash your hands religiously and observe good hygiene because ypu might pass it on

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:30

I love my scarf mask! It's cosy and I can quietly cough into it without freaking anyone out.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 29/03/2020 22:36

The masks help you from infecting other people. Unless you have the specially fitted ones, like the HS is supposed to provide their staff with, they’re unlikely to prevent you from catching it. I would wear them as I’ve got a persistent cough, not CV, and I think it helps others feel a bit more secure.

Gloves are got to remind you not to touch your face.

Please make sure you wear a hair and or tie your hair back as it will help you to stop touching your face while fixing your hair.
