Wearing disposable gloves to supermarket

Balhammom · 29/03/2020 20:24

Curious to know if I’m being OTT or if others are doing this too?

My logic is that I’m going to be handling lots of dirty surfaces that others have also touched. I don’t want to transfer these to my car. Hence, I wear gloves to do my shop and pack, but remove them before getting back into my car. I also immediately disinfect my shopping and (eg) bank card once I get home.

I’m going food shopping tomorrow and out for the first time in 9 days and I have a pack of disposable gloves in my bag.

I don’t care if I look a tit Grin

I wear gloves and a tight face mask I bought in January from Cambridge mask (so nobody can say I am using precious health resources) .

There is far too much evidence out there about the importance of mask, not a single one on the lack of utility . Some countries have imposed compulsory mask wearing if out of house. So if you can try to make your own with the pattern issued by Universities and hospitals.

and listen to Michael Osterholm ( Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota)

The whole interview is so interesting, but if you just want the face mask chat, jump to the minute 44.35

I've been wearing disposable gloves to the supermarket this week. I also wipe all the shopping with with antibac wipes when I get home

Zzz1234 · 29/03/2020 21:10

Not sure where your all getting your gloves from but I work in care and we are desperate for them, the ppe promised by the government is very slow coming thru. It really annoys me to see you all around supermarkets when we are getting much closer to people who have it and could be without ppe soon. Could you not wear marigolds and disinfect them when you get home. We are being told ppe is not needed unless doing personal care or unless your going into a room with someone who has symptoms or who has been diagnosed. The risk to us is a lot greater than u in Tesco.

BeardedMum · 29/03/2020 21:11

I don’t wear gloves, just wash my hands obsessively and disinfect car and everything I touch on my way home.

adaline · 29/03/2020 21:15

you use hand sanitizer, then put on disposable gloves and are given a sanitised trolley.

What's the point in using hand sanitiser if you're going to be putting gloves on? Confused

HyacynthBucket · 29/03/2020 21:16

Where is it even possible to buy disposable gloves? I would love some, but no chance.

easythere · 29/03/2020 21:16

DH has been the one to go out food shopping and he's been wearing both gloves and a mask just incase.

Tbh until last week I hadn't thought about cleaning the actual shopping but I will do from now on!

God I can't wait for this horrible virus to go away Sad

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 29/03/2020 21:19

I went to the garage yesterday in gloves & mask and was thought I’d get funny looks but then the other 3 or 4 customers and the checkout guy there were wearing them also!

Namelesswonder · 29/03/2020 21:21

Overkill. Even hospital staff are being told they don’t need PPE equipment all the time. Just keep washing your hands with soap and water. Masks are also a waste of time, unless they are properly fitted and have valves. Cotton surgical type mask need to be changed every couple of hours minimum or they become breeding grounds for the virus.

Blondiney · 29/03/2020 21:23

I started doing it three weeks ago.

willdoitinaminute · 29/03/2020 21:23

Please don’t reuse gloves. They are single use for a reason and YouTube to see how to take them off correctly.

Blondiney · 29/03/2020 21:24

Amazon still has them @HyacynthBucket

willdoitinaminute · 29/03/2020 21:25

And if men wear FFP3 masks they need to be clean shaven to get an effective seal.

Ponoka7 · 29/03/2020 21:26

If they make you feel better and you aren't getting complacent by wearing them, then there's no harm done, as long as you are putting them in a bin.

We are back to one use plastics again, though, when we don't really need to be.

Having said that i have three pairs of leather gloves I'm rotating for when I'm getting a bus.

Ponoka7 · 29/03/2020 21:28

Masls are a waste of time because if we are at risk of taking in the virus through our mouth and nose, we will still get infected via our eyes.

If you practice social distancing, that's more effective than masks.

Inniu · 29/03/2020 21:30

@adaline
I would guess the reason you are asked to sanitise your hands before putting on the gloves is so that you don’t contaminate then while putting them on with unclean hands.

Bunnylady54 · 29/03/2020 21:32

Masks don’t protect you but protect others from you - heard or read that somewhere. I wore gloves to Aldi yesterday & took them off after returning the trolley. I haven’t been wiping my shopping though.

MowzersAsleep · 29/03/2020 21:35

I think I may as well, rouxh a dirty trolley, touch dirty items, put them in a bag.

Then hand gel before getting in car, wipe items at home, then wash hands.

UYScuti · 29/03/2020 21:36

I think masks and gloves are overkill but people are using them to signal their vigilance and concern about infection risk, and that is understandable

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/03/2020 21:37

Nothing wrong with it really sensible.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/03/2020 21:38

I ordered these yesterday and they are arriving tomorrow. Don't know what they are like.

Can't find hand sanitiser anywhere though. I'm thinking of making up a squeezy bottle of soapy water to carry in the car and a roll of kitchen towel to dry on.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2020 21:40

I use hand sanitiser instead.
Gloves are hard to find anyway.

LeGrandBleu · 29/03/2020 21:43

@Zzz1234 the gloves I am wearing are labelled as non-medical but for food handling and DIY jobs.

@Bunnylady54 here are 34 research papers on the importance of facemark (not surgical masks, those are useless) docs.google.com/document/d/1HLrm0pqBN_5bdyysOeoOBX4pt4oFDBhsC_jpblXpNtQ/edit#

There is NO science on the absence of protection from face masks . None that I have found or none that has been provided. There is a massive shortage of masks and the necessity to reassure billions of people, so the message is wash your hands.

@Ponoka7 this is why it is useful to wear protective goggles or you can make a face-shield following the guideline from NYU open-face-website.now.sh/face-shield-fabrication-flatpack.pdf

EmmiJay · 29/03/2020 21:44

I wore my leather gloves 😂 bit odd wearing them the other day when the sun was out and I saw a man with flip flops. But I cleaned the gloves after taking them off and hung them on their own special hook outside my front door. Can't get disposable ones anywhere so they'll have to do.
