Wearing disposable gloves to supermarket

Curious to know if I’m being OTT or if others are doing this too?

My logic is that I’m going to be handling lots of dirty surfaces that others have also touched. I don’t want to transfer these to my car. Hence, I wear gloves to do my shop and pack, but remove them before getting back into my car. I also immediately disinfect my shopping and (eg) bank card once I get home.

If you read many online posts from scientists it's totally pointless

LeGrandBleu · 29/03/2020 21:46

@BoreOfWhabylon

I make my own following the WHO guidelines: very easy to do and you can still find the ingredients. Of course I didn't make 10 litres, so I rounded up the last digit to make a litre. It is 80% alcohol based and a lot more liquid than a gel.

I'm not wearing gloves, but I am using hand sanitiser and wiping down my car etc. I'm also washing down all shopping packages and putting my clothing straight in the washing machine, and getting in the shower. It feels excessive, but also makes me feel better.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/03/2020 21:48

Thanks LeGrand. Where did you source the alcohol from? I'd need to order online.

LeGrandBleu · 29/03/2020 21:48

@anonacatchat not science based, but politics based.

I posted links to studies, links to countries enforcing face masks,

Happy to admit I am wrong if anyone shows me the science, not the reassurance.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/03/2020 21:49

Overkill

Really? I think you missed the medrxvic.com link upthread, which states almost 68% of samples taken in hospital taken outside the coronavirus quarantined area tested up for coronavirus.

rslsys · 29/03/2020 21:49

I carry my own gloves and donned a pair before filling the car up at the local Tescos.
Exited the car and began the ‘pay at pump’ process.
I was heralded by a Tesco’s employee and asked if I wanted gloves, I showed her my gloved hands and carried on.
Another car came in and I heard her go through the same spiel, the driver accepted the offer of gloves and the Tesco’s employee approached the driver and offered the box of gloves in the same way you would offer a sweet from a bag - 2 metre exclusion? No one has arms 2 metres long!

Haffiana · 29/03/2020 21:49

Do you wear them when paying?

MsPeachh · 29/03/2020 21:52

I wore them yesterday. I think you’d probably be ok if you’re a diligent hand washer, but I’m terrible for touching my face. I wore them because I work in a lab and I know I won’t touch my face whenever I have them on. Was glad to see others had them on too! Plus it stopped me getting any germs on my steering wheel.

LeGrandBleu · 29/03/2020 21:52

@BoreOfWhabylon
I am in Australia and bought methylated spirit at a shop called BigW. it is a sort of target, with clothes, home stuff, fishing, ...
Despite the name, methylated spirit doesn't contain methanol since 2007 . So it is 96% ethanol, almost 4% water and a bit of a foul tasting substance.

I found Isopropanol online at an art supply shop in France and had it sent to my parents, then bought on amazon the peroxide and glycerol

Yetanothernamechange1234 · 29/03/2020 21:53

I live in the arse end of the country and went to Tesco today and they providing antiseptic gel, gloves and masks. Felt stupid putting on but everyone did, was also one way system up and down the Aisles and lines marked on floors to separate where we could stand with trolleys. I saw my Dad and couldnt even give him a hug!

LeGrandBleu · 29/03/2020 21:54

Overkill? really @Namelesswonder . Tell that to the 10-14% of health staff contaminated and to the families of all those doctors who died in Italy (I think 40 or 50 so far)

kateandme · 29/03/2020 21:55

still wash your hands when you come in though.
ive seen people do this with marigolds when getting the post and parcels in too to get off the outer packaging.then washing hands with the gloves on to wash anything off them like you would with the hands.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2020 21:56

"Masls are a waste of time because if we are at risk of taking in the virus through our mouth and nose, we will still get infected via our eyes.

If you practice social distancing, that's more effective than masks."

Masks are effective, even if not always 100%. Look up the info, bearing in mind that there's pressure on us not to order the proper masks because there's a huge shortage and they're needed for the NHS.

bananaskinsnomnom · 29/03/2020 21:56

I would if I had some!

I haven’t been to the supermarket in over a week (haven’t left the house in a week full stop!) Braving it tomorrow as I have no milk or fresh anything, but in terms of true need I need bin bags and washing up liquid now. So it’s time to brave it. Thankfully supermarket is about 200 meters from my house and has the zones inside marked out with tape on the floor. Hand sanitizer is ready that’s the best I can do

justasking111 · 29/03/2020 21:56

I wear winter gloves all through the winter because of flu and norovirus when shopping. Now I wear them but when I get home they and the shopping bags go in the washing machine and tumble dryer.

Also washing all my shopping now, which is a pain.. Do not forget to clean car keys, steering wheel and door handles too.

Eckhart · 29/03/2020 21:58

@Yetanothernamechange1234 If your dad doesn't live with you, it's illegal to give him a hug!

Jiggy16 · 29/03/2020 21:59

Can I just ask how people are ‘disinfecting’ their shopping when they get home?

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 21:59

I've been wearing nitrile gloves in the supermarket and petrol station for about 3 weeks now.

I peel them off and dump them in the bin outside, then use hand sanitiser.

Tonyaster · 29/03/2020 22:00

And I use a scarf over my mouth and nose.

Aderyn19 · 29/03/2020 22:01

I wash my shopping in milton solution and don't buy unwrapped fruit/veg

Haveitheright · 29/03/2020 22:03

Home and straight into a bucket of washing powder and dried on radiator

I don’t think that would be hot enough to kill germs. The advice is 60 degrees.

purplerainn · 29/03/2020 22:04

I haven't really been to the supermarket as my partners been going but he does wear them. He hates touching the basket/trolley hands at the best of times as do I (they're grim) so he's more conscious than ever.

Eckhart · 29/03/2020 22:04

Gloves... I keep my own leather ones on at all times when I'm outside, shopping or walking the dog. I don't really know why, because when I get home, i take them off and handle all the packets I've bought with my skin. It feels somehow, on a visceral level, like I'm protecting the world from me. The less things I touch the better. The virus will survive less on my glove than on my skin.

I have no fucking idea what I'm talking about.

Coffeeandnutrients · 29/03/2020 22:06

Has everyone literally ignored @Zzz1234? Please, they’re not much good just wash your hands and leave the PPE to those who are ACTUALLY dealing with human beings who have the coronavirus.

Imagine being told “this person has the coronavirus, please help them without gloves that are no longer available because people had to buy the stock off the internet to shopping”
