To not know how to feed my family!

We’re luckily not in the position yet. I can manage for another week I think.
I have four kids under 6, and I’m on my own. We don’t fit the criteria for vulnerable delivery slots, plus can’t actually get one.
How am I supposed to get any shopping?!!! Can’t take the kids in, can’t leave them outside, can’t get delivery!

Keep trying with Tesco. They are releasing delivery slots all the time.

CleverQuacks · 28/03/2020 18:35

Check your local supermarkets. I have three children and am I single parent. My oldest is ok to stay home alone but my other two came with me to aldi yesterday and nobody questioned it. I put my youngest in the trolley and insisted my other son held on to the trolley so they weren’t touching anything. I got a bit shop so won’t need to go again for atleast a week. It’s the best I can do.

IOnlyWannaBeWithYou · 28/03/2020 18:37

Check social media. One of our local Indian takeaways is offering to pick up milk, bread etc should anyone need it (and no, you don’t have to order a takeaway).
There seems to be a lot of community spirit if you look for it.

HermioneWeasley · 28/03/2020 18:42

Why can’t you take the kids with you? Are you self isolating?

Bluewavescrashing · 28/03/2020 18:46

Check local butchers and Farm shops for delivery

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 28/03/2020 18:53

I can’t move on my Facebook page for people offering to help pick up groceries for strangers. In London though. But ring around and get online there are lots of people keen to help.

Iwantedthat · 28/03/2020 18:54

@caringcarer
Sorry to high-jack the thread but where did you book with for April 15th, I keep trying asda but can't look past 11th April?

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 28/03/2020 18:56

My elderly parents have volunteers who are picking up shopping for them and i live on a large estate and a group has been set up for those who are unable to get shopping, so do look to see if anything like that is operating near you.

FreakStar · 28/03/2020 18:56

Blimey- four children under 6? Do you have twins or something? Do they not have another parent?

FreakStar · 28/03/2020 18:58

I would keep trying online delivery- slots are becoming available and if you can mange another week then I'm sure something will come up before then.

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 28/03/2020 18:59

asda add delivery slots in the middle of the night. might be worth setting a 4am alarm for?

i’ve had a delivery today and they had everything i ordered. i think people are beginning to settle down a little.

SeaViewBliss · 28/03/2020 19:00

Look at your local council website. They should have something set up locally and could put you in touch with people who can help.

squishedgrapes · 28/03/2020 19:03

Do you have a local green grocer that can deliver to you? A farm shop?
I'm a single parent and have managed to find local green grocer, butcher, and a delicatessen, as well as a vegan place that are delivering.

Mumto1girl3boys · 28/03/2020 19:07

Why cant you take them in?

AmelieTaylor · 28/03/2020 19:07

If some people could just think for one second before posting it would be nice. If she had a husband able to help or the kids Dad, she wouldn’t bloody well be posting would she. Just take things at face value and offer helpful advice &/or support or bugger off - your judgemental twattery simply isn’t required.

If you don’t believe posters, report & leave it to MN to handle. people are stressed enough without being grilled.

& no one in their right mind should be suggesting leave 4 kids under 6 at home with a neighbour babysitting through a window FFS

Intelinside57 · 28/03/2020 19:08

@Amelie Taylor - well said! The "Be Kind" wore off bloody quickly didn't it?

BarbaraofSeville · 28/03/2020 19:10

If you drive leave the children in the car

Surely that's unwise and possibly illegal for four under 6?

Second the asking for help. As well as the people who can't go out due to illness, people in your situation equally need assistance when delivery slots are unavailable.

SoupDragon · 28/03/2020 19:10

Why cant you take them in?

Only one person is allowed in and it seems some places include accompanied children in that.

AvoidingRealHumans · 28/03/2020 19:11

Some of the replies are ridiculous. Why are people asking where the father/husband is, if she has twins etc Confused
I'm relatively new to this site and while it can be amazing, a lot of times it isn't.
It seems to be a place where some smug, unkind and self righteous people like to congregate.
For fuck sake, get off your high horses. If you can't help with a suggestion/solution find another thread where you may be of use.

Daisiest · 28/03/2020 19:11

Can you ask a friend to go?

Trueperfectionhastobeimperfect · 28/03/2020 19:12

Iceland are doing free next day delivery for elderly/vulnerable/selfisolating if they deliver to your area

Mintychoc1 · 28/03/2020 19:12

Do you drive OP?
If so, are there any petrol station with reasonably sized mini supermarkets? Because you could go in there and park right next to it so you could see your kids the whole time.

SoupDragon · 28/03/2020 19:13

What about your husband?

The OP clearly says she is on her own! It's right there in the first post.

Michelleoftheresistance · 28/03/2020 19:15

Possibly a wild suggestion but if it's an emergency and the children's school is open for key worker children would they consent to the kids being on site - even if sat somewhere quiet without mixing with the other kids - so you can shop?

SoloMummy · 28/03/2020 19:16

Try a village greengrocer. Many are delivering veg boxes.

Sign up for an online milk and more delivery (but will be more costly than usual I'm afraid).

Alternatively, early morning trip to a local village shop. The if youngest are in pram, they could possibly be left outside if a safe spot. Again not ideal, but puts them at less risk of the virus. But obviously depends on your area. Here it would probably be safe in law of probability, but you'd need to risk assess. Or take them in the car and park outside of a village shop.
