Spoilt cats

HerstoryInTheMaking · 28/03/2020 12:13

So with the supermarkets having limited stock, my cats have had to have cheaper supermarket own brand cat food.

They are refusing to eat it full stop. They might have a nibble here and there but they just wont eat

They'll eat it when they get hungry!

AlCalavicci · 28/03/2020 12:17

Dont worry a cat will never starve its self to death , they will either eat the food you put down or be come friends with your neighbours and snaffle their cats food , or they will go feral and start snacking on mice , voles , frogs , birds worms etc

Snooks1971 · 28/03/2020 12:18

Another one here whose cat doesn’t seem to have had the Corona memo....

Rosebel · 28/03/2020 13:07

Yeah our cats weren't impressed with the different cat food either but my opinion is they'll eat it when they're hungry

Ruby8719 · 28/03/2020 13:10

Unlike humans, can’t don’t like too much variety or a change in their food. It’s not that they’re spoilt, the new food could taste and smell completely different to their normal food so they may be weary.

Have you got any old food to mix it with?

Other than that persevere, if you have no other options then neither do they.

NeutralJanet · 28/03/2020 13:11

My cats are the same, not impressed with the Aldi own brand cat food because I couldn't be arsed to go to the big Asda in the next town for their usual Felix. Throw in the fact that I'm working from home at the kitchen table so they're whining round my feet all day long and I'm rapidly losing the plot with them.

junecat · 28/03/2020 13:15

I've explained to my cat numerous times that he can't have his usual food but he refuses to accept the reasons why. He is refusing to eat the substandard offerings and is glowering at me from his tower. He'll get over it!

Windyatthebeach · 28/03/2020 13:16

Our Aldi wasn't going to allow dh to have 7 tins.
We have 2 dcats so just a week's worth. He told them if he has to have less they were therefore forcing him back into a shop in a few days time...

crankyhousewife · 28/03/2020 13:17

A cat won't starve. There's always food outside that they can go and catch.

Geepee71 · 28/03/2020 13:19

If mine don't like the food I've put down they will not eat it, they will get very vocal about wanting food, but will not touch it.
So I don't waste my money now on anything other than the food they will eat, it's a complete pain.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 28/03/2020 13:20

I have a cunning plan that as I run out of the preferred food, I will start mixing the inferior food in with it gradually to slowly accustom them to it.

(I fear I have too much time on my hands to be able to give this as much thought as I have. I also fear they will kill me in my sleep if they work out what I'm doing...)

CSIblonde · 28/03/2020 13:23

Oh I bet they're not impressed! I stocked up on Go Cat in Feb precisely because I thought if we lockdowned (word?)mine will never touch a substitute! She'll lick it then leave it & disappear for 2 days round next door as revenge! She's currently pestering the life out of me to play mouse tennis 24/7.

tmh88 · 28/03/2020 13:24

I had to get Asda own brand cat food this week.. he usually has iams he has attacked me every time he’s seen me since.. it’s day 2 and he’s eaten the food..Blush I did genuinely have a thought of the cat is going to eat me alive before he touches that food though Grin

nettytree · 28/03/2020 17:11

Cat food and litter is the only thing I have stocked up on. I have 3 cats and one is very vocal at feeding time..

TheWernethWife · 28/03/2020 17:26

I've made sure my 3 kitties have enough food but have got what I can. If they turn their noses up at it then they will have to lump it.

Mine are spoilt Siamese but will have to make do with what's given them.

newnortherner1 · 28/03/2020 17:39

OP why are you surprised?

Marshmallow91 · 28/03/2020 17:48

I gave my dog "dog food" rather than one of his usual meals yesterday (fresh crooked meat, veg etc) and he looked at me as if I'd just shat on his bowl Grin it was one of those nice lily's kitchen ones too!

He's a spoiled dick. What did I eat yesterday I hear you ask? A sandwich with Tesco own brand "coronation chicken sandwich spread". Hmm

steppemum · 28/03/2020 18:09

I shop in asda, I have asda delivery slot.
I have elderly parents who I have persuaded to stay at home.

I did their shopping with mine on my delivery so none of us had to go into a supermarket.

except I had to pop in to Waitrose for their cat food, as madam won't eat asda.

I did buy 3 packs, and told my mum that was the last time I'm going to a supermarket if I don't need to.

(to be fair, cat is very old, and other food makes her sick, she can't even eat all the flavours in the pack. I might need a mercy trip in a couple of weeks)

Witchend · 28/03/2020 18:12

I suggested that we could solve the pet issue by connecting families with pet mice with families with pet cats. Feed one, remove the problem of getting feed from the other. It went down very badly. Grin

Zilla1 · 28/03/2020 18:14

I knew a cat who would regally ignore all this 'will eat when it's hungry enough'. That cat only ate one food which was not a purchased food and required cooking. Would give the world to see her again.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 28/03/2020 18:17

I have the opposite problem as my cats only really like the cheap stuff as they prefer the jelly than the actual meat.
Everyone has stockpiled the large packs I usually get of tinned food and all that is left is the expensive packs of brand name foil packets.

With three cats my cat food bill will be more expensive than the human food bill.

attillathenun · 28/03/2020 18:30

This is the exact reason why we can’t add cat food to our click and collect Tesco order - god forbid they might not have the exact food my cat likes, the tiny, whiskered dictator will not be happy. No substitutes will do, has to be Sheba chicken in gravy in bloody foil trays only Grin which is of course the one that’s always hard to come by at the moment!

Zilla1 · 28/03/2020 18:33

Atilla, would she be fooled by refilling a foil with other food then spooning the food out of the approved foil in front of her (I jest, I know feline super powers of taste, smell and the probably at least seven other feline senses).

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/03/2020 18:35

Zooplus have really good quality brands, free delivery over about £30.
I'm still working my way through my Brexit stockpile (six months of cat food and one pack of dried milk) - you can see who gets priority)

I find if I put her on cheaper brands, if she deigns to eat them I notice the difference in the poo tray, so will put up with the fussiness.

She had recently developed the really annoying habit of leaving about a teaspoon of whatever I give her - we have incredible battles of will where I won't give her more until she has eaten what is there. Frustrating when I'd prefer not to waste any! Hmm

Mordred · 28/03/2020 18:37

One of our cats ate an entire pigeon. I found the wings and feathers under the coffee table this morning when I got up.
