www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8162725/Police-urge-Britons-spill-beans-neighbours-suspected-breaching-coronavirus-lockdown.html

hey will be asked if their report concerns rule-breaking by an individual, group, or business, on what street, and at what date and time - by the minute.

It comes as police forces across the country face charges of 'overzealousness' from ex-MPs, lawyers, and human-rights groups this week.

Wow...

This will not end well - the Police need to sit down with nice cup of Camomile as they seem as fucking crazy as the frothers on MN.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2020 13:22

Where I live we have crowds of teenagers congregating. Something needs to be done about it so I welcome this.
It's not for 'I think my neighbour's been out twice' even if some people will use it that way.

MaidenMotherCrone · 28/03/2020 13:24

@biwinoone is right. Very Orwellian. This could start the breakdown of society. On my street at least.

Merrymumoftwo · 28/03/2020 13:27

If other forces are like ours we lost about a fifth of staff at present and are try desperately to clear the 999 line of non immediate life threatening calls like this.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/03/2020 13:28

I think it's to divert the chronically nosey away from serious calls, give them something to do - and I bet that it's as effective as the 'How is my driving?' reports.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 28/03/2020 13:31

This is awful

Neighbours turning each other in, settling scores, being vindictive

What a terrible idea

iklboo · 28/03/2020 13:31

This kind of shit makes me so glad we're a no civilian gun country.

HauntedHats · 28/03/2020 13:31

They don't all live together...just the parents, their adult kids visit daily.

hipposarerad · 28/03/2020 13:33

It does say that you won't know the outcome and they won't follow up everything, its just to appease the curtain twitchers and they may catch the odd group gathering through it

Maybe they can send everyone who fills in the form a complementary set of pearls to clutch Grin

Inappropriatefemale · 28/03/2020 13:33

I totally agree with this.

I heard a guy on the bus the other day, he was talking on the phone about how a guy he knew went to Asda knowing full well he had CV and was told to self isolate, it’s people like this that ruin it for the rest of us and if I knew that of someone then I wouldn’t hesitate to stick them in.

FunkyKingston · 28/03/2020 13:33

I hope these forms get the full attention of the local inspector. The refuge Inspector that is.

Poppinjay · 28/03/2020 13:36

Poppin and if they get burns on their skin? That'll help the NHS. What a bonkers thing for DD to say. Is she very young?

I had to go pick up a prescription this morning. We all had to queaue up outside the chemist as it was only one person allowed in at one time. I was there for about an hour. Everyone was respecting the rules, stadning 2 metres a part etc in fact everyone was chatty and friendly and accepting of the rules. However a police car drove up and down several times, obviously watching us. We were obviously being 'watched' for want of a better word, even though it was bloody obvious why we were all there!

By all means break up mass gatherings, disperse gangs of youths etc but don't let these new found powers go to your heads and start acting like the gestapo!

Inappropriatefemale · 28/03/2020 13:40

Did anyone see the news last night where in Perth a policeman was telling a man ‘go home, go home, if you’ve got it then your killing people so go home’, I genuinely have zero time for folks like this, they seem to think they are invincible.

Nicknacky · 28/03/2020 13:41

apple Being a cop myself I’m more inclined to think they are looking for a particular person who is known to frequent that pharmacy rather than corona watch.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 13:42

Given the increased number of threads about reporting others and advice to ring the police etc, it makes sense.

The curtain twitchers and mini dictators can happily type away with glee that they're doing their bit.

101 and 999 lines remain free to deal with real emergencies.

If serious reports come in i.e. pub lockdowns, football games ,other mass gatherings etc they can be dealt with if necessary, possibly in a more timely manner if a certain pattern emerges.

But mainly it will free up resources if all the curtain twitchers pool their efforts into a specific direction, preferably online.

JKScot4 · 28/03/2020 13:42

The nasty neighbours will have a field day sending malicious petty reports.
You do not know why anyone is leaving the house.

GinUnicorn · 28/03/2020 13:42

Wow some people seriously need to get lives.

Big party or gathering yes probably worth flagging but next door neighbour left the house twice? It’s creepier to be watching and monitoring in.

FunkyKingston · 28/03/2020 13:49

By all means break up mass gatherings, disperse gangs of youths etc but don't let these new found powers go to your heads and start acting like the gestapo!

I think we're seeing this already. Some forces are going far beyond what the law allows them to do.

Supersimkin2 · 28/03/2020 13:50

So why don't they catch burglars, then.

feellikeanalien · 28/03/2020 13:59

When we have police forces who spend their time patrolling twitter I can't see that this is going to end well.

I don't know whether anyone saw the video of a police officer in London issuing a fine to a shopkeeper who had drawn a chalk line outside her bakery to show customers where to stand. I think the offence was defacing council property. He said that the law was the law regardless of the situation.

I'm not sure how to link but it was the Daily Mail (I know, I know!)

Sadly people's respect for the police has declined in recent years and unless they use their powers sensibly in this situation it will only do so further.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2020 14:00

My neighbours will LOVE anything like this. They report us and each other for everything. I'm at work every day (housing, so I'm 'essential') so I'll expect to be hauled away and beaten with hoses any day now.

pippishortsocks · 28/03/2020 14:00

Spraying disinfectant on people over the fence could well constitute assault so the PP's DD would be well advised not to be so hasty in her actions and think first.

The stasi my neighbours will love this. DD's boyfriend came round and stood at the end of the drive waving hello to her this morning, the neighbours over the road came out and asked him what the hell he thought he was doing when all he was doing was stopping to wave on the way past when he was exercising.

Diagram to keep you all happy.

SpaceCadet4000 · 28/03/2020 14:00

I actually don't disagree with the premise of this, but they will get ridiculous reports and need a way to triage them out.

I'm in the US in a city with a shelter in place order and the other day in my neighbourhood about 20-30 people we sat out on picnic rugs in a communal area making bundles for hospital masks causing a big argument on our Facebook page (I didn't get involved!).

Calling the police would be too petty, but if they kept doing this sort of thing then a form would probably help police to step up their patrols.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 14:09

@pippishortsocks that is the most awesome diagram I've seen !! Thank you Grin
