We really need some system to punish the rule breakers properly. It's high time a website was set up so that those who are clearly going out of the house more than they should be can be reported to the authorities.

This is a terrible idea, police are asking you not to contact them and have even stated it’s not a crime if someone goes out more than once!! It’s guidance you should adhere to but the police can’t do anything about it!

“Police are being inundated with calls from members of the public reporting their neighbours for allegedly violating coronavirus lockdown rules.

But there is confusion over the restrictions, and senior officers confirmed that, despite government guidelines, exercising outside more than once a day is not illegal.”

ALongHardWinter · 28/03/2020 00:31

Yes,let's all become the friendly neighbourhood snitch. Ideal for people with too much time on their hands.
Sorry, but I think this is a terrible idea. You can guarantee that people who weren't actually doing anything wrong will end up being 'named and shamed' because of some over-zealous busybody.

LolaSkoda · 28/03/2020 00:35

I think all of the people who are hell bent on reporting others taking a casual stroll, should take their wand, press it against the dark mark on their arm and summon a dragon to breathe cursed fire on any misbehaving muggles.

Dicks.

ALongHardWinter · 28/03/2020 00:40

TimeAin'tNothing 'we will be watching this week to see who takes part'. Shock Bloody hell! I despair if that's what being said. For what it's worth,I heard on a radio phone-in last night that not all NHS staff are impressed by this. Some think that it's 'virtue signalling',and these self same people are probably the ones who abuse the NHS. It's a pity that they can't be shown appreciation all the time, not just in times of crisis. Anyway,I digress........

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 28/03/2020 00:47

How about a .gov reporting page where everyone keeping the rules can report in at the end of each day and get an official email to say how good they’ve been? Star

Twofurrycatsagain · 28/03/2020 00:48

Excellent idea. This worked really well in nazi Germany I believe.

backfarblackcar · 28/03/2020 00:51

@Alonghardwinter
My dh is a nurse. He was furious about the clapping. In his words, 'you should've shown your fucking appreciation by not voting conservative'.
But to add, regarding behaviour around the 'rules' I'm absolutely horrified/not surprised by how the average person has responded to this current situation. No sense, no thought. Absolutely insane.

YgritteSnow · 28/03/2020 00:54

I voted labour - as always - was I allowed to clap?

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 28/03/2020 00:56

Q

Knowhowufeel2 · 28/03/2020 00:56

Sounds like the old East Germany! That's not a good thing, btw.
People will be disappearing next. Hmm

HoffiCoffi13 · 28/03/2020 01:03

Oh for fucks sake. People are seriously rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of having a bit of power over other people aren’t they?
The only thing you can control is your behaviour. Concentrate on that.

Knowhowufeel2 · 28/03/2020 01:05

Looks like I'd be on the list as I didn't go outside and clap last night and I also don't have a #nhs, etc, frame around my profile picture.

I think all these things are just virtue signaling and it's not something I agree with.

I'm doing my bit quietly helping people out with food, etc, but I'm not posting about it all over FB.

I'm doing it because I can and it's a nice thing to do, not for the recognition I could get online.

I've already had it commented upon that I didn't participate yesterday, but I don't need to justify myself to others so I just said I was busy doing something else, which I was.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 28/03/2020 01:07

I swear I posted a thread about people not calling the police to turn their neighbours in as they’re asking we don’t. One poster will not leave it alone! Because apparently some random Mumsnet poster (claiming to be a policewoman) thanked people for reporting their neighbours! I’m thinking I’m going to have to delete the thread before I have a breakdown and get myself banned!!

TimeAintNothing · 28/03/2020 06:53

People will be disappearing next.

I know someone who thinks this is exactly what is going on and there is no coronavirus. It's all a conspiracy to allow a world government to take control and coronavirus is their cover-up. When someone "goes into isolation" or "goes into hospital" with it, they've actually been moved to a camp. The people who die from it have actually been executed by the police. The reason it's mainly elderly people dying is because they're the generation with the most awareness about these sorts of things thanks to WW2 so They are getting rid of them while the rest of us are hiding in our houses and letting it happen (never mind that WW2 starts 81 years ago so many elderly people now were only babies during it, if they'd even been born at all). She keeps posting links on FB to crackpot YouTube videos alongside dire warnings that we need to "wake up to what's going on before it's too late".

Best bit?

She's a healthcare worker Hmm

iHateJanuary2020 · 28/03/2020 07:04

TimeAin'tNothing noting who did / didn't join in clapping for NHS is horrendous. And scary.

I didn't join in. Neither will any of the colleagues I was on a conference call with either. We are civil servants all working from home. 8pm was a good time to have a daily chat after the madness of the day.

TimeAintNothing · 28/03/2020 07:12

I didn't join in because I was putting DD to bed. Even if I wasn't putting her to bed I wouldn't have joined in because I didn't want to. I'd much rather show my appreciation for the NHS by staying home and looking after myself/my family to minimise the chances of us needing to use services, although DS is on a mission to land himself in A&E with some of his escapades this week.

TimeAintNothing · 28/03/2020 07:13

DH is a civil servant too and has been doing the same thing, his line manager set it up so they can debrief and draw a line between work time and home time.

iHateJanuary2020 · 28/03/2020 07:17

On a really practical point OP, who would design, build and test this website? Who'd monitor it? Gov.uk staff across the board are working their arses off but hey, let's start another cross departmental project. Who will run it? Home Office? MOJ? The Police? What do you reckon?

eurochick · 28/03/2020 07:19

I suggest anyone that thinks this is a good idea watches The Lives of Others.

iHateJanuary2020 · 28/03/2020 07:19

TimeAintNothing same here. Trying to draw some boundaries this last week was hard. We all need to though.

TooGood2BeTrue · 28/03/2020 07:45

Some people would have felt right at home in Nazi Germany or working for the Stasi... 🙄

Knucklehead101 · 28/03/2020 08:03

'Catch yourself on' is hilarious I've never heard that before and I love it

HollyGoLoudly1 · 28/03/2020 08:24

@MintChocAddict

My thoughts exactly.

May the Lord open Grin

KatherineJaneway · 28/03/2020 08:25

A much stricter lockdown is on the way, you just have to wait for it.

Rubychard · 28/03/2020 08:28

I didn't bother with the clap either.
Earlier the same day in asda I bumped into my friend (not literally obvs). Shes an a&e nurse and was about to go into work after 2 weeks self isolating. Shes absolutely terrified of what might happen to her. And she said, with respect to the clap, that she wished people would leave her alone to get on with her job. So I left it.
