Not sure if this needs a trigger warning
(Name changed cos I felt like it and this might be outing)

I know that this isn't exactly the end of the world, and I realise that there are worse things going on right now, but I just need a moan. So here goes:

Last Friday, our beloved Rottweiler died. He was 10 and a half and had been diagnosed with cancer (osteosarcoma, that had spread basically everyfuckingwhere!!) the week before and the vets couldn't say how long he had left. I'm still wondering why the fuck they woke the poor sod up after his xrays but hey ho

I came downstairs to let him out for a wee and there he was, lying on the floor Sad I thought we'd have more time, and I honestly thought we'd end up taking him to the vets to be PTS because everyone kept telling me "you'll know when it's time". But no, he passed away, alone, on the living room floor, after seemingly wandering about during the night in pain.

Anyway, he'd obviously been lying on the couch and had had a bout of diarrhoea (with some blood in it) which has soaked through the throw that was on there and has made an absolute mess of the couch Sad DH (god bless him) spent ages cleaning up the mess on the floor where DDog passed away, but we aren't really equipped to clean the couch, and I actually bought couch cover from DFS when we got it, so we rang and made a claim, filled out all the forms and have been waiting patiently for them to come and clean it for us.

Well, they aren't coming now cos everyone is on lockdown and their staff aren't going out to anyone's homes. That's fair enough. I get that we have to do our best to stop this stupid fucking virus from ravaging the country. But I'm still gutted that my couch fucking stinks and it's a contant reminder of walking downstairs to find my lovely dog dead on the floor.

I'm devastated that my lovely boy has gone, and who knows how long it will be till someone can come and clean the couch. I can't afford a new one, but even if I could I can't go out and buy one anyway!!

I also would just love a hug from my mum, but she's 71 and is self isolating Sad so fuck knows when I'll be able to actually get near her!!

So, thanks for reading. Not sure what the point of this thread actually is, just needed to vent I suppose.

Thanks @Guardsman18 I have the number for them as we have an active claim. They just won't send anyone out at the moment because of the lockdown situation.

I would have hoped they'd have offered us the cleaning stuff if they thought it would be useful, but with the amount of poo that was actually on the couch (he was a big dog, 7 and a half stone, even though he'd lost loads of weight and hadn't been eating properly) and it was also blood and other bodily fluids, I'm guessing it happened at the very end and he then got off the couch and lay down and died on the floor, as there was more blood/body fluids on the floor Sad sorry if its TMI

Anyway, I think it may be too bad for us to attempt to clean, I'd be worried about ruining the couch. I'd rather leave it to the professionals

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. Losing a dog at anytime is heartbreaking but it must be awful to have to stay at home without your dog and the smell reminding you.

I hope some of the suggestions on the thread help you resolve the smell.

I have no advice for you OP but I wanted to say how sorry I am about your lovely boy.

Your post made me cry and brought back memories of losing our boy. It will be 8 years ago in July and I still get upset if I think about it.

You obviously loved him to bits and he would have known that.

steppemum · 27/03/2020 12:36

Hi OP, so sorry to hear about your ddog.

You need an enzyme cleaner as squirrel friends said.

we had a dog diarrhoea accident on our carpet. We tried all the things poeple have said - baking soda, febreeze, washing powder etc etc. None took the smell away, nor the stain.

then we used the simple solution enzyme spray that squirrel recommended. It removed the smell, and the stain.

Honestly, I would use it. If the company complain that you have attempted to clean it, I think you can justifiably say that as they weren't coming, you needed to clean it in some way.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP, I lost my dog to cancer nearly two years ago and still miss her every day. You may be able to claim for the sofa on your pet insurance, if you had it

FuckCovid19 · 27/03/2020 12:45

Thanks all, I will see what DH thinks and I can maybe call at Pets@Home on my way home from work

Heartbreaking to lose a much-loved dog, and even worse in these times. I am so sorry.

Could you perhaps put the couch outside in the sunshine and fresh air for a while? It might blow away the worst of the smell and then perhaps put a couple of old towels over the cushions when you bring it back in?

FuckCovid19 · 27/03/2020 12:56

thanks @UpTheLaganInABubble

We didn't have insurance for DDog, but we do have content insurance, I might see if that covers anything...

The cancer diagnosis came as a complete shock, at least to me. DDog had been limping for a week or 2 but I honestly just thought he'd stumbled on the stairs (as he'd done before) and had done himself an injury. When the limping didn't get better and we noticed his ankle was swollen, we took him to the vets on the Wedneday for a check up, and they asked to see him the next day for an xray.

I dropped him off on the Thursday morning on my way to work, as we had to leave him there all day as he needed to be sedated. I got a call at lunchtime asking if one of us could go and hold him down as they couldn't get near him to give him his pre-meds (I think he was sore from them poking and prodding the previous day) he was very growly and I think they were scared of him. He was normally a big softie, but they couldn't risk him biting anyone, so DH had to go and sit with him for well over an hour to calm him down.

DH met me at the vets after work to help me get DDog in the car, and then the vet gave us the devastating news that it was osteosarcoma with secondary on his lungs (the chest xray showed numerous tumors). I was floored. I just never gave it a thought that it would be cancer, I just thought he'd pulled a muscle and would need some anti-inflammatories Sad

I'd be interested in finding out what is effective against dog diarrhoea stains.
Sorry for your loss.

Purpletigers · 27/03/2020 12:59

Sorry for your loss ! Please remember that you loved him and he loved you . He died in his most favourite place in the world , do not feel guilty that you weren’t there. You did your best!

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 27/03/2020 12:59

Vinegar mixed with bicarb of soda is good

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2020 13:05

I’m so sorry, OP. Mine are 10, it’s no age.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 27/03/2020 13:09

OP I didn't want to go past this thread without saying anything.

Your dog was loved and he knew it. He died in his sleep in his own home where the people he loved were. He was happy and loved and every single day that he spent with you was a good day. I'm sorry for your loss. It comes to us all eventually :(

curlymom · 27/03/2020 13:10

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you and the family are coping. In terms of the sofa ( lesser issue ) could you put a throw over it and arrange for dfs to come over after this madness ends? Not ideal but....hugs to you x

IamaBluebird · 27/03/2020 13:13

So sorry Op, sounds as though your dog had a lovely life with you and was loved.
No advice about the sofa sorry, but good luck Flowers

foodtoorder · 27/03/2020 13:19

I would def try using your vacation on it with a decent cleaning solution.
If you've already tried cleaning it then the fire retardant thing is already damaged.
Failing that could you ask a specialist cleaning company to come and do it outside your house perhaps? A self employed specialist might consider it if there is a way of distancing from you /house or people.

foodtoorder · 27/03/2020 13:20

Not vacation I meant vax cleaner

VivaLeBeaver · 27/03/2020 13:20

Sorry about your dog. Must have been such a shock.

Would a steam cleaner help for the sofa? My dog had terrible diahorrhea last week on the carpet and a Bissel carpet shampoo machine sorted the stains.

FuckCovid19 · 27/03/2020 13:22

@Cherrysoup Rottweilers have an average lifespan of 8-10 years, so at 10 and a half he had a good inning!

We got him when he was 6 months old, from a relative of DH's coworker who had found out they were expecting again and already had a toddler, and as such couldn't cope with DDog as well - lucky for us as he turned out to be the best dog ever!

Oh that is so sad, OP.

I still cry over our cat, and she died nearly four years ago.

Losing a companion animal is just awful. I am so sorry for your loss.

userxx · 27/03/2020 13:32

We lost a greyhound to that bastard bone cancer too :(

Fuck you cancer.

Ylvamoon · 27/03/2020 13:34

Sorry for your loss... he id at peace now. Flowers

On a practical note, I find bio washing powder my go to magic cleaning solution! Just dilute some in warm water, and sponge the area down.
