I think I’ve spent too many days on my own now... I’m starting to question everything!
When something comes in through my letterbox I wonder if it is safe. I think I’m being paranoid, but I have been stashing them away for a few days before opening them to mitigate any risk. (I’ve also been wiping down food packaging wherever possible).
Am I losing the plot? Or is this sensible?

I've been doing the same

dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 09:26

Open the mail/parcel and bin the packaging then wash your hands. Supposed to last up to 24 hours on paper/card

lemontreebird · 27/03/2020 09:27

No.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2020 09:27

No, just washing my hands after.

Megan2018 · 27/03/2020 09:28

We’ve been leaving things for 24hrs, then disposing of packaging and washing hands.

HPLikecraft · 27/03/2020 09:28

I've been wiping post down with disinfectant, opening it, washing hands, wiping down whatevers inside and washing hands again.
I'm getting through a lot of hand cream!

CatChant · 27/03/2020 09:29

Same here.

It doesn't cost me anything to leave the post unopened for three days and it gives me more peace of mind. So whether it's justified or not I shall go on doing it.

dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 09:30

Why 3 days though? Its 24 hours on paper/card

Lockheart · 27/03/2020 09:30

.... No, but then I'm not rubbing it all over my face.

Just wash your hands after opening it and binning the outer packaging.

Emmalou88 · 27/03/2020 09:31

I said this a while back. So many people touch letters. It could be on there.. i have been opening letters, throwing the envelope straight in the bin and washing my hands well and spray sanitising the floor near the door.

SpillTheTeaa · 27/03/2020 09:31

I've been wiping everything that comes into the house! It's the most sensible thing to do.

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/03/2020 09:32

Yes.
However I recommend listening to this radio program it talks about if you need to do that or not and how long for.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2020 09:33

Doesn't wiping letters down with disinfectant make them a bit soggy?

catgirl1976 · 27/03/2020 09:35

I leave the post for 3 days, then open it, bin anything I don't need to keep, disinfect any surface it touched and door handles etc then wash my hand.

All food items and packaging gets either washed in diluted bleach (tins etc) or soapy water (fruit etc) and then left for a few hours, rinsed off, put away, all surfaces cleaned and hands washed

InDubiousBattle · 27/03/2020 09:36

Is everyone getting ordinary post? We aren't. I've seen dhl, hermes etc but no royal mail post for the last week.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2020 09:37

Yes, we have been getting Royal Mail deliveries.

Greendin · 27/03/2020 09:38

I've been putting everything in the garage for 72 hours then opening the parcels on the grass wearing gloves and putting the packaging in the appropriate outdoor bin.

The stuff inside should be fine as it hasn't been touched by human hands since dispatch.

CendrillonSings · 27/03/2020 09:40

Yes - 24hrs for cardboard, 72hrs for plastics and other hard surfaces (which the delivery may contain).

Frankiecandle · 27/03/2020 09:44

No

greenlynx · 27/03/2020 09:44

Yes, we just left a parcel from Amazon in the garage for 2 days, maybe 3, we don’t need it straight away.
All letter are left for a few days as well. Letters that look urgent are opened to have a look, then put under the table for 2-3 days quarantine, envelope into a bin, hands washed.
Some things go into the bin straightaway like menu from the local pizza house.etc
The virus can survive longer on smooth surfaces like plastic and laminated paper, hence a couple of days for everything.

CatChant · 27/03/2020 09:45

Why 3 days though? Its 24 hours on paper/card

Oh there's no great logic to it. Partly because I started after reading the virus had been shown to last up to three days on stainless steel and plastic (that research didn't mention paper and card), and partly because it decreases the likelihood of me muddling up a package and opening it too early, and mostly just because it makes me feel better with no consequence other than delayed post-opening.

2beautifulbabs · 27/03/2020 09:50

No just washing my hands after taking the packaging off and binning the packaging

Bojo1 · 27/03/2020 09:53

No. That’s ott

PurpleBlueAnemone · 27/03/2020 09:53

Remove packaging and put in relevant bin.
Wipe down product if its a hard surface-DD got a new phone case from china the other day Hmm and this is what I did.
Wash hands.

Froq · 27/03/2020 09:56

Yes but each letter is allowed one outdoor exercise per day.
