Are you putting mail and parcels into quarantine?

I think I’ve spent too many days on my own now... I’m starting to question everything!
When something comes in through my letterbox I wonder if it is safe. I think I’m being paranoid, but I have been stashing them away for a few days before opening them to mitigate any risk. (I’ve also been wiping down food packaging wherever possible).
Am I losing the plot? Or is this sensible?

I'm doing the same with food shopping where possible - it goes in a special "quarantine zone". The difficult thing is with chilled or frozen items, I don't have (or have space for) a separate fridge. But I am just being extra careful to wash my hands after handling.

OlivejuiceU2 · 27/03/2020 10:10

We have done this will all packages and letters. For us it easy to leave them a few days and then get rid of packaging and wash hands. We’re being extra cautious because I am pregnant.

SlothMama · 27/03/2020 11:33

No I'm just washing my hands after using it, and cleaning the letter box, door knocker and door bell daily. Just trying to do my bit by limiting the spread between delivery drivers

adaline · 27/03/2020 11:34

No, what's the point? Just dispose of the packaging and wash your hands.

Natsku · 27/03/2020 12:11

I leave them in the porch for 24 hours, then open

Yes. I spray with dettol the leave for 24 hours.
DH on the other hand happily nips out to the shop and doesn’t even wash his hands when he comes back. I asked him to wash his hands the other day as he’d been out and not washed them then was rubbing his hand on his face. Apparently that counts as “hounding him” and he washed them begrudgingly saying he just hadn’t had chance to yet (bollocks). Feel like I’m fighting a losing battle Sad

ADreamOfGood · 29/03/2020 10:28

I took the front page off the newspaper yesterday and binned that (well- it's not as if we didn't know what the headlines we're about!). Then washed hands, and less stressed about having bought it.

Echo08 · 29/03/2020 10:28

No just washing my hands .Mainly because I watched a video of a dr talking about just that .His words you could leave it on the doorstep for 3 days Shock or just wash your hands throughly afterwards.

TheChosenTwo · 29/03/2020 10:54

No, I’m not doing any of that.
Just taking care to wash my hands more thoroughly. Outer boxes/envelopes go in the normal kitchen recycling bin and when it’s full that gets taken to the blue bin outside.

CJsGoldfish · 29/03/2020 13:12

Did not know it was a 'thing' until I saw it on here. I actually thought this was a 'joke' thread and was laughing at the opening of mail on the front lawn. I was imagining long tongs and a hazmat get up 🤣
So no.
I open the mail, throw out the rubbish and wash my hands.

heartsonacake · 29/03/2020 13:41

I think you’re being silly and over the top.

Ethelfleda · 29/03/2020 13:47

Where were you lot when I was getting an utter kicking on here for suggesting that delivering random items like brownies to your neighbours isn’t a necessary risk to take Grin

Seriously though - I open the parcel or letter, Chuck the packaging and then wash my hands.

RepCones · 29/03/2020 13:52

We have a carrier bag by the door, the postie can just drop it in there when we open the door, then we don't touch it for at least 24 hours.

A friends husband is a postie and Royal Mail have been awful. No social distancing in the sorting office, no masks, no gloves, no hand gel, no disinfectant of any kind. They should be ashamed of themselves.

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 13:54

No, I do wash my hands though. There’s very little post anyway.

The lack of junk mail is joyous

GulliBelle · 29/03/2020 14:02

@froq lol

WobblyAllOver · 29/03/2020 14:06

I open the post and then wash my hands. Not planning on doing anything different as it's about risk and my personal opinion is that I think post is very low risk e.g. there is a theoretical risk but probably not going to happen.

CobraPushUp · 29/03/2020 14:26

^So you know better than scientists Hmm

pippong · 29/03/2020 14:29

Are Royql Mail not doing the rounds?

Haven't seen them around in days and haven't received any letters either. I get something nearly every other day.

WobblyAllOver · 29/03/2020 14:30

Cobra is that targeted at me?

I said it's my personal opinion and whilst I wash my hands after handling it which I understand is the official guideline on most things I am not going to go to the extremes of leaving it for days before I handle it. Which bit of uk guidelines say I must quarantine it for a certain amount of time?

SquashedSpring · 29/03/2020 14:34

I recieved a parcel containing a couple of boxes of childrens shoes a few days ago. I used gloves to pick the parcel up off the doorstep, then removed the plastic bag and put it in the bin. I left the shoe boxes by the back door for 24 hours before touching them. I put the gloves in the washing machine and washed my hands. Then I zapped the door handle and keys with my steam cleaner. Don't know if that's excessive or not careful enough!

Parker231 · 29/03/2020 14:37

Nothing so excessive - just more hand washing than before the pandemic.

WobblyAllOver · 29/03/2020 15:00

The lack of junk mail is joyous

I agree Grin.

The thing is if you wash your hands well after handling it then I am confused as to why you need to quarantine it. I am not going to lick the post and after washing my hands then any potential transfer to my face if I touch it has been eliminated. Can anyone explain why I need to quarantine it over and above washing my hands after opening it and binning it?

Ilovemypantry · 29/03/2020 15:10

@ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything

Same here with DH, seems like every time he walks past me I say “Have you washed your hands?”. He’s getting a tad fed up with it tbh!

BogRollBOGOF · 29/03/2020 15:11

Handle as appropriate and wash hands.

I watched my best friend tear herself apart with OCD rituals as a teenager, to the point where they dictated and consumed her life. I have no interest in engaging with overzealous, irrational rituals. Covid 19 is not the only hazard to wellbeing out there.
Sensible hygiene measures, yes. Paronoia, no.
