Are you putting mail and parcels into quarantine?

I think I’ve spent too many days on my own now... I’m starting to question everything!
When something comes in through my letterbox I wonder if it is safe. I think I’m being paranoid, but I have been stashing them away for a few days before opening them to mitigate any risk. (I’ve also been wiping down food packaging wherever possible).
Am I losing the plot? Or is this sensible?

Bloody hell - quarantining the post?! A GP on BBC Breakfast this morning said that you should bin the wrappers, e.g. envelopes, then wash your hands.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/03/2020 15:43

And now Johnson is sending us all a letter saying to stay indoors. I do hope he hadn’t licked the envelopes. 😁

TechGinny · 29/03/2020 16:48

No. I have stopped licking the postie, though.

Topseyt · 29/03/2020 16:58

No, I do not do this and have no intention of starting. I couldn't be arsed with such faffery.

I open a parcel, put the outer wrapping in the recycling as usual and then wash my hands.

HappyHammy · 29/03/2020 17:03

I have put the small recycling bin by the front door so postie just puts the post in there then I leave it for a few days

I spray it all with dettox all in one disinfectant spray, I have already got my latex gloves on, I then unwrap in the garage and most stuff has cellophane on so that's ok.

Parker231 · 29/03/2020 18:42

Doctor on Sky News says to just wash your hands after handling post.

BlueGheko · 29/03/2020 18:50

Do we think Boris is trying to kill us all by sending a letter to every household in the UK then? Have to say doesn't seem the most sensible idea given we know the virus can survive on paper Confused. No doubt plenty people not thinking to wash their hands after opening post. Quarantining mail does seem a bit ott though, just wash your hands, it really is the most effective defence against this virus.

FlyingPandas · 29/03/2020 18:56

I’m actually gobsmacked at the extremity of some of the measures on here, I literally bin packaging and wash hands, no disinfectant or anything and I certainly don’t quarantine it.

I realise we have to be cautious, but I do worry that there will be a lot of people with quite severely obsessive anxiety about cleanliness after this...

Beebumble2 · 29/03/2020 18:58

We have a computer arriving from Shanghai, on Monday. We thought it was from our local Apple store!
It’s been tracked in depots across Asia and now is here via DHL. So it’s going into isolation and wiped down.
I hope it works on both levels!

JellyfishandShells · 29/03/2020 19:00

No - open and put packaging into recycling as per normal

SummerHouse · 29/03/2020 19:12

I quaranteen it if I can. I am massively relaxed and in no way scared of catching CV but I am practical. If there a one in 10000 chance of picking it up this way then it's something I can easily do.

solosod · 29/03/2020 19:16

No. You can't inhale covid from a parcel. Providing you wash your hands properly after touching the parcel you'll be fine. Apart from that if that's how you got covid the viral load would be low!

BabyLlamaZen · 29/03/2020 19:19

After all of this, no harm in being too cautious right?

Natsku · 29/03/2020 20:23

It takes zero effort for me to just leave the post in the porch for 24 hours or so, so why would I not do it?

Evilcat · 29/03/2020 20:30

The postman are not being supplied with surgical gloves or hand sanitiser. They are out for hours without the option to wash their hands. Not surprisingly lots are off sick.

Ninkanink · 29/03/2020 20:32

We take parcels in, wipe down with alcohol from an aerosol can, then leave in the hallway for 24+ hours before we open them. Hands washed after handling.

Post is taken in, left in a pile on the floor for 24+ and then opened. Hands washed afterwards.

BackforGood · 29/03/2020 20:34

No

No. I have stopped licking the postie, though.

Yep, same here. Disposable gloves for all post and parcels which are then opened in our back porch, wiped down and left to dry for a couple of days.

I'm doing the same with our shopping - wiped down and left in the garage.

We're vulnerable and in lock down, so no way we're risking anything coming in on surfaces.

Sparklingbrook · 29/03/2020 20:36

I just open everything as it arrives, deal with it and then wash my hands. Will we ever get figure to say how many people were infected by their post?

Reginabambina · 29/03/2020 20:40

I asked them to self isolate at first but the little fuckers wouldn’t listen so now I put them into quarantine the second d they gone through the door.

Daffie19 · 29/03/2020 20:50

Just wash your hands after handling it......?

cactus2020 · 29/03/2020 20:53

No. I'm trying to minimize but don't believe we can eradicate so am handling post and shopping without wiping etc. I guess govt guidelines arent recommending doing that kind of stuff.

Standrewsschool · 29/03/2020 20:54

No, throw the envelope away straight away, and wash my hands.
