I didn't clap

I had no idea about it! Heard the noisecat 8pm looked out the window and saw people outside clapping but couldn't see why. I'm not on social media and I didn't hear about it. Saw on the news later but I missed it. I do give a care about the NHS but now all my neighbors will think I'm terrible and don't care!

Nhs workers may have appreciated the applause. But what nhs workers really really
want is better pay and better working conditions including, recently, better PPE.

I did not vote Tory and made a donation last night to a charity supplying workers with PPE. Texted my NHS family and friends my support. My neighbours can think what they think.

The idea of people clapping together is in a way very sweet and community-spirited, but can’t bring myself to do that sort of virtue signalling. Reminds me of people who post on Facebook hyperbolic rhetorical statements about the kind things they are doing.

ninox3 · 27/03/2020 04:53

I didn't have a clue either and I didn't hear anything.
I'm not on social media and I was feeding the baby around that time so it is easily done. I wouldn't of known until my MIL rang at 9 an said did we do it. We was clueless. But we have shared a heart on the nhs map! Xx

Cottagepieandpeas · 27/03/2020 05:40

Thanks for the link to that fundraising site @perfectstorm
I'll share that as much as possible.

CSIblonde · 27/03/2020 06:06

I didn't. Stuff like that sends my social anxiety thru the roof. It's all too look at me tbh.

Oblomov20 · 27/03/2020 06:15

I totally missed it too. Knew about it and Planned to participate, but was in the middle of doing a report first work and just so engrossed I missed the whole thing. I'm a bit embarrassed really.

loserssaywhat · 27/03/2020 06:24

I didn't either. I text my friend who's an icu nurse to tell her I'm proud of her and appreciate her.
I'm not really bothered about what my neighbours think.

SarahInAccounts · 27/03/2020 06:27

I didn't either. I looked out to see if anyone else was about but no one was. Mostly elderly at our end of the lane and probably knew nothing about it.

SallyWD · 27/03/2020 06:39

I heard they will do it every Thursday at 8pm so you can do it next week.

vikap · 27/03/2020 06:41

I didn't do it. Find it cringe and hypocritical of most seeing as the majority of people in this country either didn't vote or voted tory. Everyone videoing all the clapping for Instagram. Cringe cringe cringe.

I say this as someone who has worked for the nhs!

MoltoAgitato · 27/03/2020 06:44

I think it’s awful. But my view may be coloured by the number of NHS staff I’ve seen try to swerve anything related to Covid duties and senior doctors who are still playing one upmanship politics at the moment.

And at the moment, our hospital is mostly empty. Our surge hasn’t yet happened.

Whenwillthisbeover · 27/03/2020 06:45

I didn’t either, DD is frontline NHS too and she didn’t, we had wine yesterday late afternoon as she is back to work today and both fell asleep.

I feel terrible.

rwalker · 27/03/2020 06:49

I clapped but is now the time for political point scoring.
My concern with labour would be by the time JC gave everything for free there'd be fuck all left to fund crisis like this .

TBH the general public are as much at fault for the state of the NHS as much any goverment .
Imagine people not smoking ,drinking, drug use being overweight these conditions tie in with mental health and taking regular exercise.
Then burden on our health service would be DRAMATICALLY reduced.
yes yes government at fault as well but without people being more socially responsible there trying to fill a bucket with a hole in.

reesewithoutaspoon · 27/03/2020 06:59

The sight of boris Johnson clapping knocked me sick tbh (ICU nurse)
None of my neighbours clapped and tbh I wouldnt want them too. Its my job I,m no more special than anyone else doing a difficult job. I dont want to be lionised as some angel. The 'its a vocation' argument has been used for donkeys years to justify low pay and shit hours. my colleagues and I would rather not be in this situation but we have no choice.
I would have much prefered that all those people who panic bought FFP3 masks off amazon and ebay etc hadnt decimated the stocks and we were not struggling to obtain the PPE we need than people clapping on a doorstep

Yester · 27/03/2020 06:59

It was a lovely moment where I live. All the road came out. Everyone waved at each other. My paramedic husband found it surprisingly moving and he's a hard bastard!

jasjas1973 · 27/03/2020 07:17

Puked when i saw Sunak and Johnson clapping.... as i'm sure they (Cons) had a pay freeze for NHS workers, followed by a 1% pay rise, whilst voting in a succession of 10% pay rises for themselves? and called NHS workers unskilled just a few weeks ago....

Also, less of the "we are all in it together" from our politicians... no we are not, they are millionaires with access to the best medical care on the planet.

LakieLady · 27/03/2020 07:19

The clapping was accompanied by fireworks where we live. Hmm

Elsa8 · 27/03/2020 07:21

I thought it was bloody lovely, hearing everyone like that. I find it quite uplifting! I hope it made some NHS staff smile, and I hope it cheered up other people. It certainly made me feel better and more connected to all the other people stuck in their homes too!

I certainly wasn’t looking at my neighbours and judging those who didn’t though!

catwithnohat · 27/03/2020 07:24

I didn't because noone could see.

Newer mind clapping, how about voting to ensure the NHS is funded properly and how about when this is all over to use the NHS with respect (ie turning up for appointments, not abusing staff and not behaving like total hypochondiacs).

catwithnohat · 27/03/2020 07:24

I wish there was an edit button..

BettyFilous · 27/03/2020 07:27

My friend’s street managed to wake up their doctor neighbour who was sleeping off a run of night shifts.

Lazyllama · 27/03/2020 07:28

My sister is a nurse working on a covid positive ward. She said she found it moving.
When she went to her car after her shift someone had a go at her for parking in "his space" on the street so still cunts about.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/03/2020 07:37

My friend’s street managed to wake up their doctor neighbour who was sleeping off a run of night shifts.

How do they know?

KatherineJaneway · 27/03/2020 07:37

I completely forgot about it. I had headphones on watching TV so no idea who did or didn't clap round here.

PhoneTwattery · 27/03/2020 07:40

I felt I had to but was dreading it all day. I had to force myself as I believe in a nationwide show of support (which HAS visibly uplifted NHS workers) but for me it was right up there with being dragged onto a dancefloor at parties.

...and the obligatory virtue signalling filming didn't help.
