AIBU? I don’t think 12 yr old son should roller blade during his one hour exercise slot. Cycling walking fine.

Please help sort a family dispute.

My son has recently discovered the joys of roller blading (I don’t blame him, I loved it too at that age and introduced him to it) trouble is. I can’t help but feel it is too much of a ‘leisure’ activity at the moment given the current lockdown.

We get one outing a day and it needs to be efficient. Running, cycling or a fast walk. Get out and get home. I feel like roller blading is too unstable and is somehow not in keeping with the current mind set of the nation.

Husband and son think I’m crazy. It’s exercise. What’s my problem. It just doesn’t sit right by me. Please tell me I’m being unreasonable, if indeed I am? Hope you’re all keeping well In this crazy world we find ourselves in.

I think you are wrong! He could have an accident with a bike or with roller blades, so you can't get him on those grounds. The only grounds you seem to have is that he's having fun. For god's sake, he's locked up 23 hours a day - let him have some fun!

ZoChan · 26/03/2020 20:31

Are you approaching it as you don't want to burden the a&e if he has an accident?

positivity123 · 26/03/2020 20:32

YABU.
Poor kid is going to be trapped indoors for the next few weeks, let him Rollerblade. Let him pogo stick if he wants.
In fact I think that to show him how wrong you got it you should Rollerblade with him!

daisypond · 26/03/2020 20:32

Rollerblading is fine, and much better than some forms of exercise. Obviously they couldn’t mention every specific type of exercise.

NuffSaidSam · 26/03/2020 20:32

Yes, you're being insane.

As long as when roller blading he is 6ft away from anyone else it's fine. No different from walking, running or cycyling!

00100001 · 26/03/2020 20:34

Walk, run or cycle was a suggestion

Lefkosia · 26/03/2020 20:35

Fucking nuts. You arent on a military route march, you're getting out in the fresh air for exercise, of course he can roller blade

Lunafortheloveogod · 26/03/2020 20:35

I’d maybe agree if he’s attempting tony hawk stunts at a skate park he needs to travel to.. but if he’s rollerblading down the street n willing to be safe he’s doing no more harm than someone cycling.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 26/03/2020 20:37

Someone on our FB village chat last night suggested that walking should be the only approved exercise. People running and exhaling their "hot, laboured breath" are a health risk and should be stopped...

makingmiracles · 26/03/2020 20:37

YABU my kids have been out yesterday and today cycling, roller skating and skateboarding. With protective equipment and helmets.
Don’t see how that’s in any way inferior to walking/jogging

Willow2017 · 26/03/2020 20:40

We get one outing a day and it needs to be efficient
???
Its supposed to be fun too. As long as he stays away from others etc etc. Let him enjoy his tiny bit of time outside.

Oly4 · 26/03/2020 20:41

You’re being ridiculous. The idea is to get exercise. Running and walking were suggestions. Don’t be daft.
Today we took a football to a big green space near us - brilliant exercise!

Lucyloula · 26/03/2020 20:42

Thank you. That’s a fairly definite response. It was more about the efficiency as he isn’t very stable on them. The way I see it was that if you needed to get somewhere fast would you choose a bike or rollerblades but maybe I’m over thinking it. Three kids all being homeschooled is making me somewhat neurotic! Thanks guys x

No probs but seriously it’s fine. The police saw us with our football today and said nothing and it was clear we were a family away from other people

Knackeredmommy · 26/03/2020 20:48

YABU we took a walk to the park and there were kids practicing on their skateboard, all good. To me It's more about getting some fresh air.

IdblowJonSnow · 26/03/2020 20:50

Yabu!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/03/2020 21:03

rather depends on where he's doing it surely? if you're somewhere where there is plenty of space to career around on rollerblades fine - if you are somewhere more confined and he is at risk of crashing into people, making them have to move out of his way or feel at risk - then maybe not.

Grumpos · 26/03/2020 21:05

Lol I love this

Yes you’re being mental! It’s not efficient enough??? That’s amazing

Let him enjoy his exercise and you enjoy yours Grin

Knobblybobbly · 26/03/2020 21:07

I woman walked past me today in those bouncy moon boot thingies.

Windyatthebeach · 26/03/2020 21:08

My dd's have been roller skating every day..
Didn't occur to me it wasn't appropriate tbh...

JKScot4 · 26/03/2020 21:10

Is there a rule it must be fast exercise??
I think you’re developing cabin fever craziness.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 26/03/2020 21:13

I think you’re being a bit silly. One dc walks, one cycles and one skateboards! I don’t care so long as they follow the social distancing and get some exercise!

Graffitiqueen · 26/03/2020 21:14

YABU and a little bit crazy.

LagunaBubbles · 26/03/2020 21:16

Are you normally such a control freak?
