To think 30 isn’t old to start a family

My niece has recently announced her pregnancy. She’s just turned 30. She’s received a lot of comments saying she’s left it late. Aibu to think it’s a good age to start a family?

OP posts:
DartmoorChef · 26/03/2020 13:13

Ridiculous, if she was 45 i could understand the comments.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 26/03/2020 13:15

Great age. I wish her all the best Smile

SachaStark · 26/03/2020 13:15

Not at all. I recently turned 30, and DH and I thought we might start this year... but since 2020 looks to be up shit creek medically-wise and financially-wise, we thought it best safe to wait another year or two!

JellyfishandShells · 26/03/2020 13:15

Huh ? The demographic trend has been very clearly towards 30 as a minimum age for years now,

iwanttoshakesomeppl · 26/03/2020 13:16

Not to old at all.

jomaIone · 26/03/2020 13:17

Who are these people that comment like that? It's a disgrace that people would even say that.

I had my first child when I was 30. Took 6 years for her to arrive so it might not be by choice.

ZoeandChandon · 26/03/2020 13:18

Last time I looked up the average age in the uk it was around 28. I was 35 with my first so I think she young:

Fabellini · 26/03/2020 13:19

I had my two at 32 and 35.
For me, any earlier and I’d have been too daft to do it right.
(Not convinced we did it right anyway!)

Mintjulia · 26/03/2020 13:20

I hope not. I started mine at 45 Smile

Too late in what way?

SallyLovesCheese · 26/03/2020 13:20

FFS, of course it's not too late.

IceKitten · 26/03/2020 13:20

I was 31 for my first and nearly everyone in my NCT group was older. However I think there are regional differences.

Megan2018 · 26/03/2020 13:21

We had our first at 41 and 46, 30 is considered very young in my circle.

My mother was nearly 30 when I was born in the 70’s! That was considered quite old back then.

Chiyo666 · 26/03/2020 13:21

That would be too old for me, but it’s personal choice on the individual.

weegiemum · 26/03/2020 13:21

I was 29 and that was 20 years ago! Then I was the average age, I think it's at least 30 now!

Had the others at 31 and 32.

Tableclothing · 26/03/2020 13:22

I fucking hope not. Only just started mine and I'm 37. (I was the oldest in my NCT group though)

TwoKnocks · 26/03/2020 13:22

The only person I know well who had children before the age of 30 now says she wonders why the hell she was in such a rush.

Point out to your niece that there's a close correlation between maternal age and education.

eaglebay · 26/03/2020 13:22

Wtf no! Where in the country are you?

Everyone in my NCT group was 34+, I was an anomaly at 29. London.

TwoKnocks · 26/03/2020 13:24

I fucking hope not. Only just started mine and I'm 37. (I was the oldest in my NCT group though)

That's so dependent on area, though, @Tableclothing. I was 39 and I think I was bang in the middle of my NCT group of eight.

TwoKnocks · 26/03/2020 13:26

Exactly, @eaglebay -- that was very much my NCT experience. I think the youngest person in ours was 34 (and she was very frank about it not having been a planned pregnancy, come to think of it...)

FullOfCake · 26/03/2020 13:26

My two were born at 31 and 33 (nearly 34). Life took hold as with many people, like university, jobs, renting, house buying, marriage, or traveling and Having fun... 30s is pretty normal nowadays for these same reasons.

I8toys · 26/03/2020 13:29

Perfect time. I had 8 years with my husband on our own before having kids. Worked out fine they are now teens and keep us young.

amazedmummy · 26/03/2020 13:29

Not old at all. Does depend on where you live though. I've not long had DS at 27 and I was a little older than some I met.

hm246 · 26/03/2020 13:29

Since September myself and my group of friends have all be turning 30. It of a group of 11- 6 became first time mums. Definitely not to old, I’d say it’s the average.

hardboiledeggs · 26/03/2020 13:31

30 isn't old to start a family. Most people use their 20s to have some fun before settling down into family life. I was 26 and a few people commented that was young Hmm
Everyone seems to have an opinion these days

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/03/2020 13:31

In London that’s considered young!
