Unable to find an accountant

Who works from home/alone/as a sole
Trader?

I don't want a company just need tax returns doing. I'm not sure if accountants still operate like this but all I can find via google etc is the big companies.

Post on a local fb group?

I don't understand why you can't ask any accountant to do what you want. What difference does it make if they're a sole trader?? My accountant offered me certain packages and they work in a small company. I opted for the top package as I can't be arsed doing any of it.

floatygoat · 26/03/2020 13:22

My understanding was a sole trader wouldn't charge as much and be more able to cater for us amidst coronavirus (already set up at home etc)

Sole traders vs a small accountancy firm will be about the same price. They are also probably all working from home already as it’s a job easily to do remotely so will be able to provide you with services still. If you really want someone who is a soletrader maybe search for a bookkeeper instead, I think they often also do small tax returns.

Dear floatygoat

I may be able to help you why don't you PM me.

Lonecatwithkitten · 26/03/2020 16:19

My accountant who works for a large firm is working from home- in fact does so the vast majority of the time. The local office closed, but she continues to serve local clients.

LouiseTrees · 26/03/2020 16:24

My husband is an accountant. So am I but I’m on mat leave. Please PM me so I can reach out.

Lalapurple · 26/03/2020 16:25

They still exist - ask around locally for recommendations

TheWaspsAreEverywhere · 26/03/2020 16:50

Hi @floatygoat, I'm a self-employed bookkeeper who is qualified to do self-assessments, if that's what you need. Feel free to PM me if you still need it done.

cologne4711 · 26/03/2020 16:58

There are loads. Just ask around on local FB groups as a pp says. If you can give an idea of your location we might be able to recommend on here too.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. I don't think there's anything an accountant can do for us now anyway.

Dh is self employed subcontractor (tax and NI deducted from his pay but still has to do tax returns) and he hasn't done any tax returns for the last several years. He can't even get proof of his earnings through work now because their offices are closed as well as all the construction sites.

So we're not entitled to any help now. Not sure what to do.

Yes he's a prick and yes he's very pissed off with himself. Have been nagging and cajoling him for years to sort it out or at least let me help him but he was so afraid of all the money in fines he owes HMRC he was just paralysed over it. Angry
