to be genuinely concerned about the casual over-use of Zoflora?

I have never bought or used any kind of disinfectant before.

I have vague memories of Dettol disinfectant in the bottom of the vomit bucket when we were poorly kids, but other than that I can't remember it in my childhood home either.

I don't really know what you need to use it for!

Anyway, our local pound shop had some small Zoflora bottles in recently and I bought one on impulse having become aware due to Mumsnet and the weird devotion to Mrs Hinch.

Dh has been pretty sick and sweaty so I decided to boost my usual hot wash of his bedding and pillowcases with Zoflora. I pre-soaked the pillow cases in warm water, biological powder and less than half a small capful of Zoflora. Then I rinsed them thoroughly under the shower. Then I put them through a 2 hour hot wash in my washing machine which includes 3 rinses. Now they are hanging up to dry inside and they still absolutely reek of this bloody disinfectant! I don't have any chest or allergy issues but I can feel the smell catching in my throat.

Isn't it dangerous as fuck and only to be used in tiny amounts if you absolutely must in extreme circumstances? I don't think I'll be going anywhere near it again.

I like zoflora for disinfecting hard surfaces, but personally I wouldn’t mix it with other things (the washing powder) and I would be using it on anything I put on my skin.

SoleBizzz · 25/03/2020 20:57

Definitely isnt a middle-class household product. Stay away, refrain!

bridgetreilly · 25/03/2020 20:59

Why would you put it in the washing machine, though? The easiest way to get rid of the virus is soap and hot water. Which, you know, the washing machine already does a pretty good job of.

fannyanney · 25/03/2020 21:00

I use it to make kitchen surface spray

AhoyMrBeaver · 25/03/2020 21:01

No, and no.

I don't use it, but it's just a dilute disinfectant I think. It shouldn't still be on fabric after it's been through the wash. Are you sure you haven't got a bit on your face, if you can smell it still and you're having a physical reaction to it?

LakieLady · 25/03/2020 21:01

I was wondering about using a few drops of Zoflora to try and make my own anti-bac spray for the kitchen.

I don't have any white vinegar or essential oils in the house, which seems to be the recommended ingredients for making your own, and won't need to go shopping for several days now.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 21:04

I use it in the fabric softener bit of my machine for smelly football/gym kit. You can make a spray too. They are uses that are suggested on the zoflora websote

It’s bloody horrible in all its varieties. YANBU.

MoonBabysMagicalKalimba · 25/03/2020 21:08

I’m just baffled as to how it doesn’t have a child proof cap.

Iooselipssinkships · 25/03/2020 21:11

It works really well in a steamer and an iron. Partner and I fucking love Zoflora. Lavender is best and you can get it for £1 in bowel&movement

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/03/2020 21:12

It's not about getting rid of "the virus", I just had a vague notion of making things extra clean after a lot of sweating had been going on.

Good point about the lack of child proof cap! I hadn't even thought of that :(

Influence of mrs hinch perhaps

TerribleCustomerCervix · 25/03/2020 21:16

It’s the most overrated household product ever.

All the scents are really artificial and strong, and very few people need to disinfect their houses on a regular basis outside of a normal clean.

For cleaning when someone’s had D&V I much prefer Dettol for that retro aroma.

AhoyMrBeaver · 25/03/2020 21:18

Most cleaning products don't have safety caps. Only bleach and drain unblocker does in my cupboard I think.

SideEyeing · 25/03/2020 21:20

I like the smell of the linen one.. Until I spilt an entire bottle on the floor one evening. Took 24 hours of scrubbing with the windows open in midwinter before I could go in without my eyes and throat burning.

OlaEliza · 25/03/2020 21:22

It's disgusting stuff. I bought a bottle that ended up sitting under my sink unused, as I didn't really know what to do with it. I checked out a few mrs hinch videos when she got big and she left undiluted capfuls in her bath. So... I did it with the lavender, chucked it in before I went to work. DH got home before me and rang me up asking what I'd used, his eyes were streaming and he was practically choking. I never used it again. I couldn't douse my house in that shit like some do. I feel for their kids/pets/partners forced to live amongst all that artificial fragrance.

blueshoes · 25/03/2020 21:22

I never use disinfectants or antibacterials. If no one is immunocompromised in the house, just why?

TerribleCustomerCervix · 25/03/2020 21:25

I remember seeing people on that DIY on a Budget on Facebook recommending putting neat Zoflora in those fragrance plug ins that go into electrical outlets.

An astounding amount of people were impressed with what a good idea it was before someone pointed out that it was a huge fire risk.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 25/03/2020 21:26

I would love to know what the heck people do in their sink that they need to disinfect them, and so often.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 21:27

I only use it in the washing machine and have used it on a puked on carpet as it's an odour neutraliser

SkinnywannabeKBH · 25/03/2020 21:34

I use it in my caravan.
I put a bit down all of the drains and a bit in the toilet before closing it up as the caravan obviously gets a bit stuffy. When we go back into it, it smells fresh and clean.
I would put it down the drains in the bathroom if we're going away for the weekend so it doesn't cut the eyes out of us as we aren't here but the house smells nice when we come home. I would also steep my dish cloth in it at night sometimes.
I like linen fresh, that's really the only one I do like.

pollysproggle · 25/03/2020 21:35

To kill bacteria? Corona virus aside there are a lot of other things you should use it for, especially in your kitchen and bathroom. It's an essential part of food hygiene and not just for the immune compromised...

TheSpottedZebra · 25/03/2020 21:36

It's awful - like Satan's aftershave.
