to be genuinely concerned about the casual over-use of Zoflora?

I have never bought or used any kind of disinfectant before.

I have vague memories of Dettol disinfectant in the bottom of the vomit bucket when we were poorly kids, but other than that I can't remember it in my childhood home either.

I don't really know what you need to use it for!

Anyway, our local pound shop had some small Zoflora bottles in recently and I bought one on impulse having become aware due to Mumsnet and the weird devotion to Mrs Hinch.

Dh has been pretty sick and sweaty so I decided to boost my usual hot wash of his bedding and pillowcases with Zoflora. I pre-soaked the pillow cases in warm water, biological powder and less than half a small capful of Zoflora. Then I rinsed them thoroughly under the shower. Then I put them through a 2 hour hot wash in my washing machine which includes 3 rinses. Now they are hanging up to dry inside and they still absolutely reek of this bloody disinfectant! I don't have any chest or allergy issues but I can feel the smell catching in my throat.

Isn't it dangerous as fuck and only to be used in tiny amounts if you absolutely must in extreme circumstances? I don't think I'll be going anywhere near it again.

you can get it for £1 in bowel&movement

Best bonkers auto-correct ever!

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 25/03/2020 21:41

🤣

enjoyingscience · 25/03/2020 21:41

fucking hell, do not put it in your iron! Breathing it in to that extent will absolutely ruin your lungs.

I’ve got some for dealing with vomited on carpets, but that’s the only sensible use I can find for it. Normal cleaning spray is better for pretty much everything else.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/03/2020 21:41

It is not in any way essential! There is no such thing as "you should use it for ..."

You've been sold an absolute lie pollysproggle.

Like I said, I've never knowingly used disinfectant in my entire adult life and I'm in my late 50s. If it was essential I would be dead by now?

Yanbu op. Its vile!

blueshoes · 25/03/2020 21:43

To kill bacteria? Corona virus aside there are a lot of other things you should use it for, especially in your kitchen and bathroom. It's an essential part of food hygiene and not just for the immune compromised...

What's wrong with your family's immune system that they cannot fight off normal bugs. My family almost never fall ill and if they do, generally kick it in 24 hours.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 25/03/2020 21:44

I will defend Zoflora! Love it. I have it diluted in a spray bottle for wiping surfaces, and put a drop in the sink after cleaning. Have put a bit in with laundry in the past but not every time. A little goes a long way, as some of you have noticed.

OlaEliza · 25/03/2020 21:52

It should come with a fucking pipette then!

ChoccyJules · 25/03/2020 21:53

I was actually thinking of getting it out of the cupboard as we have run out of anti-bac spray. When I bought it a while ago in a MN-induced trance, I realised it was toxic to cats so never used it. Sadly we are now without cat so I might try a teeny tiny bit.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 21:57

It's not toxic to cats if you wait until surfaces are dry before they walk on it.

Noodlenosefraggle · 25/03/2020 22:01

I bought a bottle to put in a spray bottle instead of surface cleaner in case I couldn't get any from the shops. Is that not what it's for? I bought the Mrs Hinch book and immediately returned it after seeing a page asking me to list my favourite zoflora scent. Maybe I need to read the instructions...

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 25/03/2020 22:04

It works really well in a steamer and an iron.

Case in point OP, YANBU!!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Bravo to your family. Mine is very similar thank you. It doesn't mean disinfecting isn't important just because you're ok. I suppose you don't use bleach in your toilet either just good old soap and elbow grease?

Yester · 25/03/2020 22:07

If it's toxic to cats that doesn't sound great. It's such a disgusting smell.

shinynewapple2020 · 25/03/2020 22:11

I bought some ages ago having read about it on MN and never used it. Realised the other day it says it kills 99.9% viruses so have diluted in a bowl as it says on the bottle and used it to wipe down all door handles, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, stair rail etc. I agree smell does get up nose a bit but not as bad as bleach and applying with cloth from bowl seems to irritate less than spray. And actually my house does smell nice and clean now.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 22:11

From zoflora website:

Q : Can Zoflora be used around kittens?

A : Response from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service: As long as directions for use are followed and treated areas dried completely before your kitten has access to it. Zoflora is safe and effective to use.

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 25/03/2020 22:11

I only use it to clean the Wheely bin, no way would I put it on fabric

1Morewineplease · 25/03/2020 22:11

I use it. I I know the cotton fresh fragrance. You only need a tiny amount. I occasionally put some in the fabric conditioner section of my washing machine as it really gets rid if sporty whiffs and I’ve got a spray bottle of it, heavily diluted, to spray around as we have a dog and to anti-bac clothes after going out ( during this time.)

1Morewineplease · 25/03/2020 22:14

I also spray the inside of the car with it every day , now, and I spray door handles and the whole bathroom and cloakroom with it.

blueshoes · 25/03/2020 22:23

Do you know about the hygiene paradox? Do you realise you are contributing to mutations that create antibiotic resistant bacteria?

If both our families are apparently strong as oxen, what is the point of all this disinfecting?

TopShelf · 25/03/2020 22:25

The linen one smells lovely. I put it in the washing machine softener drawer too. The laundry smells fresh and clean.

I have found the recent popularity of Zoflora quite amusing- This stuff has been around for about 100 years and it’s only just became super popular.

My mum has been using zoflora for years and years. I remember it from my childhood - and I’m now in my late 30’s. She only ever used it to mop the floors and I’m sure it only came in one or two fragrances back then.

I have always got a bottle in - again been using it for years and when I left home I bought it because it’s something my mum always bought. I use it to disinfect my bathroom floor. I use it when it’s my turn to mop the communal landing and stairs. That’s about it really. I wouldn’t use it on clothing or work surfaces as the smell lingers. Good for the bathroom but not in the kitchen where I am preparing food. A bottle lasts me ages and I tend to use the Christmas type scents as they are my favourite. The blue one that’s got a picture of a mountain on the box is also quite nice.

TeeniefaeTroon · 25/03/2020 22:32

I washed my bedding in it before we went on holiday and I came out in a rather unattractive rash. I won't be making that mistake again.

TeeniefaeTroon · 25/03/2020 22:34

Do not use it on surfaces that you prepare food on though!!

CatteStreet · 25/03/2020 22:37

I've alays boggled at the number of MNers who appear to bleach the heck out of everything daily, including putting it in the washing.

I have disinfectant spray by the loo to quickly get rid of any drips and wipe down 4yo's loo seat after use, and toilet cleaner for in the loo, but for normal cleaning needs, if I want something ith a disinfectant action, I use products made with vinegar or bicarb. Kitchen surfaces I just use washing up liquid. Laundry, a hot (not boil, only use that if people are ill) wash with normal washing powder is enough to kill stuff off.
