YABU - Bring on the butter
YANBU - Butter? On a scone?? I’ve never heard of such madness!

*They aren't mixed. Butter first, then jam, then cream in 3 layers. I can't fathom anything where you are spreading a topping without butter first. Butter is the primer!

Some people apparently don't put butter on toast when they are having peanut butter, just put peanut butter onto the dry toast. Horrors!*

I don’t have butter when having hummus or cream cheese with oatcakes.

full works here butter jam and cream makes them taste so decadent

Dahlietta · 26/03/2020 11:56

Your options do not include the correct answer. Butter on a scone is perfectly correct, but not when you have jam and cream. There are two acceptable ways to eat a scone:
1/ With just (lots of) butter
2/ With just jam and cream. No butter.

I would with cream cheese. Not with hummus because hummus is a dip, not a spread so shouldn't be used in the same way. [Opens up a whole new debate and runs away cackling]

I can't vote because everyone should have what they want and other people shouldn't comment on what someone is eating.

I have consulted Debrett’s on the issue...

No mention of butter WHATSOEVER.

There is only one way to eat a scone: Butter and jam, NO CREAM!

FraughtwithGin · 26/03/2020 12:49

We always put cream on, then jam, obviating the need for butter.
Mother - Cornish
I grew up in - Devon
However, a nice, cheese scone requires butter then a thin layer of Marmite :-)

Sonichu · 26/03/2020 12:52

How could a scone with jam and cream still be dry without butter??

(I'm a weirdo who never butters ANYTHING though)

Topbird29 · 26/03/2020 13:00

Cream then jam. If no cream, then butter then jam is acceptable. But butter, and cream with jam - not right at all. Blurgh

Topbird29 · 26/03/2020 13:01

And plain scone only - none with sultanas in

DustyMaiden · 26/03/2020 13:02

Just butter, I love butter. I love cream too but don’t like jam.

MitziK · 26/03/2020 13:12

You use the top of the clotted cream as 'butter', then you dollop the jam on top.

Ponoka7 · 26/03/2020 13:13

Always butter for me, preferably salted.

Thankssomuch · 26/03/2020 21:58

Whoever mentioned lemon curd. F*
Off.

Okay that was a bit strong. But I stand by it.
