How Can This Not Be Front Page News?

On the week end a seven year old girl was stabbed to death by a stranger with mental health issues. I saw this buried in the news this evening.

Such sad times that this no longer makes headline news. Whilst coronovirus is ravaging the world murders, knife crime etc are still happening but no longer news worthy?

RIP Emily.

It was headline news over the weekend.

It was front page at the weekend.

It was headline news when it happened.

Oh wow I clearly missed the news last week end!

I know what you mean OP. It did make the news but under normal circumstances it would have dominated for days.

Just awful! Poor little girl and the unending horror for her family.

I heard about that in the news. Very close to me a 40 year old woman was stabbed to death in the street in what appears to have been a totally random attack - I only heard about that in my local online paper. But we are going through such an astonishing crisis that it's hardly surprising that all other news has taken a back seat.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/03/2020 19:28

How awful! Horrendous!

I didn't know about it as I am avoiding the news at present.

My heart goes out to her family. What happened there is worse than anything you can imagine.

Which is why the rest of us who are still healthy but locked down need to be hugely grateful!

flossyflorenceflounces · 25/03/2020 19:29

It was but it isn't any more, there are other things going on.

Cherrysoup · 25/03/2020 19:30

I read it. My DH and I both said mh issues. 😢 That poor child must have been terrified.

AmelieTaylor · 25/03/2020 19:35

I hadn’t seen it on the news.

That poor beautiful little girl & her parents 😢😭💐

I actually think it has given things in a more measured perspective. As PPs have said, this devastating story was headline news and widely reported. Without Covid19 reporting, that poor family may have experienced further, unwarranted intrusion from the press for weeks.

If it turns out that there have been failings in services that should have been supporting an individual with MH problems, then that also needs to be reported, but without sensationlising the story.

I think we have got used to a diet of prurient interest in the lives of innocent people, loosely justified as "news".

This was an absolute tragedy and my heart goes out to the loved ones of all concerned.
