Magic Online shopping tips

I’m desperately trying to arrange a food delivery. Two young children and we are now in isolation due to a cough. I can’t get a food delivery slot at all! I’ve ordered food before but obviously not in the same circumstances. Is there a trick to getting a slot? A time they’re released or something? Is it just luck? Any tips would be welcome! Thanks!

No magic, just luck and logging on when others are not trying.

Sainsburys will only now deliver to those who are elderly or otherwise vulnerable.

I think lots of people booked a few slots weeks ago though and now there is very little left.

I can’t help you with what time the delivery slots get released, but I can say that if you’re able to get one, I’ve found the trick is to order a real wide range of stuff so that if something isn’t available then another item likely is. So instead of ordering 2 loaves of bread, order 1 of bread and 1 of bagels.

Also think about alternatives to what else people are buying - instead of Sainsbury’s standard range pasta, get the branded one or the filled fresh ones.

If there is something you desperately need (ie non diary milk) then order 1 x soya and 1 x oat then you should at least get something.

Has worked for me so far. Good luck!!

ASDA has lots of slots at about 5am this morning (although the site is down at the moment for maintenance I think). I've seen on other threads that people have had luck with ordering in the middle of the night when online traffic is much quieter. Good luck - I hope you get one. I've also seen lots of local suppliers on my local Facebook sites

www.morrisons.com/food-boxes/

My parents have signed up for this as they could not get any delivery slots. They also signed up for milk deliveries with some additional dairy products, eggs and fruit juice available alongside the milk. Their local butcher is also delivering.

Try local farm shops, several near me are doing delivery now, as is the local green grocer.

Have a search for local FB/Nextdoor groups in your area.

There seem to be lots of people who are helping others like you with shopping if you are self isolating. Either by adding to their orders or shopping locally on your behalf and then dropping off at a safe distance.

Our streets started this over a week ago.

My area has calmed down a lot since the weekend and local shops and the smaller local supermarkets are better stocked than the bigger supermarkets.

Online shopping is swamped the moment, but do keep checking and book an order for the next available delivery, even if it is 3 weeks away.

You can reserve your slot with just a couple of items and then add to it nearer the time.

If push comes to shove, try printing/writing out what you need and your contact details and posting it through your neighbours letter boxes.

I've shopped with Ocado for years, I've been in a queue for at least 48 hours , I'm number 5657. When this is over I'll be shopping with someone else.

Iceland seem to release their slots at around midday for next day delivery. I managed to get one today for tomorrow.
