This is more of a rant than AIBU, feel free to join me...

So I work in a supermarket convenience store. I was on the early shift yesterday and surprise surprise, people are still ignoring social distancing and essential travel... Just a few examples of people being idiots include...

  • Old people coming in to buy a newspaper
  • People coming to buy lottery tickets

Neither are food or medicine. What do people not understand about essential travel?

  • People coming to the till with a single item... Go to the self checkout FFS 😡
  • People not understanding the 2m distance. You don't need to be peeking over my shoulder whilst I'm dealing with the self scan.
  • People realising there's a queue to get into the shop and then grunting forget it. If you can 'forget it', it is clearly not essential so why the fuck are you out and about?

I was very snappy with a few customers yesterday but I'm beyond caring. I'm not going to stand with a smile while your idiotic behaviour puts me and people I care about at risk!

look at what is happening in hospitals, why would you keep popping out for a few items

So what do u suggest then, for those people who cant get what they need , have no one who cab pick it up for them, do not drive and have no bus service so have to carry everything, and who thanks to people who do drive and fill up their boots with toilet paper and soup and ready meals , cant get more than a couple of days worth of food?

Maybe stay home and starve ?

Nothing2doooooo · 25/03/2020 11:51

@itsgettingweird I understand...but how can one tell if the person did the same amount of shopping the previous day? Unless you recognise their faces and know exactly what they did, you can't tell. So, it's unnecessary and even unfair to judge anyone who packs their trolley (since panic-buying has been stopped).

For the record, I don't shop with a trolley, so don't pack. Just being objective Smile

butterpuffed · 25/03/2020 11:51

I was soo cross today, been speaking to a man on Monday who clears the rubbish/sacks around the seafront here and the nearby towns. He was going to be redeployed temporarily as not many people so not much rubbish.

Anyway he was out there today and said they've all be ultra busy yesterday and today as sacks everywhere and lots of them so full they were split. Guess what they're full of ? FOOD. Mostly just out of date. Effing selfish people buying too much and then having to throw it away.

All those other poor people who can't get hold of things they actually need. Beyond belief. Angry

UnfinishedSymphon · 25/03/2020 11:52

I don't think @shitwithsugaron* is in the wrong job at all and I totally agree with her, nobody should be popping to the shops for a bar of chocolate, a newspaper, a bottle drink, to do the lottery FFS. WE ARE ON LOCKDOWN, people are dying, when is it going to sink in!

Go out for essential shops only, one a week, not every sodding day

SarahTancredi · 25/03/2020 11:53

Yes but we shall just judge the old man who came fir bread milk and cheese but left with a newspaper instead. They are the selfish ones apparently Hmm

h3av3n · 25/03/2020 11:54

All food has calories, I don't see how white bread or pasta is more essential than chocolate or crisps when they're both not very nutritious at all but both have calories and carbs...

SarahTancredi · 25/03/2020 11:55

Again how?

You cant buy more than a couple if cans of soup now so that's what 2 lunches for an elderly couple.

They cant get enough to last a week and that's not their fault. Stires have not recovered from allowing the panic buying pre limits. Staff are telling them.when the deliveries are so they have to come back then. And hope for the best.

Nothing I haven't judged anyone for filling their trolley. I'm in SI and haven't been out for a week.
I'm judging the ones I know did this last week for days on end because they could t get everything they needed the day before. Everything. Pop out for that stuff. Not for that and another trolley load of "snacks we might want while inside".

Believe me I know judging. There's a whole thread here where people would have me giving up my reoccurring slot via ASDA. I can't and won't as previously mentioned I'm shopping for 3 families basics. And my sister is doing the same with her nhs pass.

I will have to pop out for things I can't get or fresh stuff. I'll limit this to once a week where possible even though I'm out daily as a keyworker (or will be next week!)

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 25/03/2020 11:59

I’ve told the dc’s that once the chocolate/pop/crisps etc are gone, they’re gone until I ABSOLUTELY have to go to the shop for essentials.

When I have to go get bread, meat, cat food etc il throw a few bits of junk food in there for them too but I’m waiting until we’ve eaten everything we already have.

I’m dreading going to the shops! Can’t understand people who are just popping for bits and bobs...

Lazypuppy · 25/03/2020 12:02

@PlomBear i just bought easter eggs too with my essentials shop 🙋‍♀️
Stuck inside, may as well eat some easter eggs

Dogman2020 · 25/03/2020 12:03

I've not been out the house since Saturday but I do need to do mine and my dads food shop later today - i'll be going to the closest large Asda which also has homewares section and my 72 yr old dad asked me to get him some fence paint so he can be doing something because he's going insane being cooped up - now just wondering will I be judged for buying that?

Eckhart · 25/03/2020 12:03

I wish people would stop deciding for others what's essential, then calling them selfish pieces of shit for it.

If someone doesn't use the Internet and is a bit deaf (the very definition of many a decent, respectful elderly person, but also many others, I'm sure), the newspaper is the only source of news. Otherwise they won't learn about social distancing, will they?

The pp who bought chocolate was in there already for essentials. Should she have filled a trolley with stuff she already had at home, to avoid the MN bullies?

People who stand too close need to be told at the time, and in no uncertain terms.

If scratch cards aren't supposed to be bought without other shopping, refuse to sell them.

Nothing2doooooo · 25/03/2020 12:03

Govt. has not told people to shop only once a week. PPs are adding those details themselves. 'As infrequently as you can ' is what has been said and it's subjective.

To one person, they have enough storage space at home and once a week or even once in 2 weeks is doable. To some, they have absolutely no place to store food and other items (perhaps sharing living space or no living space) and can only afford to get once a day, to some in the middle, they have smaller storage space and can only shop every other day or once in 3 days.

Circumstances are different for people - have a wider perspective, shall we?

Cosmodian · 25/03/2020 12:04

@SarahTancredi

But no-one ever starved because they couldn't get JUST an Easter egg, a newspaper, a lottery ticket, a bottle of lucozade ... obviously different if you are doing a whole shop of essentials and add in these items, but to go out just for these? Can you really say that is necessary? I really feel for you, OP, not only having to go out to work and risk your health but then having to deal with this.

h3av3n · 25/03/2020 12:04

Not everyone can carry an entire weeks worth of shopping, not everyone drives. Also people have different diets, for example I will often just eat a few snack type foods as my meal as they're higher in calories, easy and quick to eat etc... this is more nutritious than white pasta but would mean I was judged more for buying them 🤔 Also the shelves are so bare, idk how people are managing a weeks shopping in the first place.

nottoday3000 · 25/03/2020 12:04

I too work for a supermarket I am livid that the national lottery hasnt pulled the plug WE DO NOT NEED TO CHECK YOUR LOTTERY TICKETS you can do this from the comfort of your sofa AND DONT BUY SCRATCH CARDS one bloke was in my queue yesterday 4 fucking times because he won £1 im so angry that I've emailed the lottery this morning regarding this IT IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR US TO CHECK LOTTERY OR SELL SCRATCH CARDS AT THE MOMENT

Number3or4 · 25/03/2020 12:05

I need to write dh a shopping list for tomorrow (I’m still self isolating because he had a fever last week), what shall I include op? Oh wait, it’s none of your business.

Nothing2doooooo · 25/03/2020 12:05

@itsgettingweird Sorry I didn't mean you specifically when I mentioned judging people. I meant in general it's unfair (for people) to judge....

I didn't realise it would come across the opposite way.Smile

LisaSimpsonsbff · 25/03/2020 12:06

Erm, @sHREDDIES19 why have you sent me an aggressive private message about this thread? Do you not want other people seeing how weird and defensive you're being about your shopping habits?

h3av3n · 25/03/2020 12:07

Also there will be plenty of people who are simply hungry on their break at work and have to buy something to eat/drink. That was me yesterday, I bought a drink and a protein bar and it was essential as I was really hungry

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/03/2020 12:09

shitwithsugaron I've said it because you're judging the product - which is food. Some people eat that sort of shit instead of nutrients but, it's food.

If they are in 'your' shop at all then they are potentially passing the virus to you - just as you are to them. You and they are accepting of that risk. What those people buy is immaterial then, isn't it?

People keep blethering on about 'being out'; yesterday it was walks, today it's shopping. Why is your supermarket (and any, really) not closing down these concessions if it matters so much?

This site has become a wall of self-indulgent ranting and hate towards other people, whatever they're doing, it's pathetic.

tinytemper66 · 25/03/2020 12:10

I bought my disabled son a DVD today so he won't be tempted to go put during this time! From non essentials aisle in Tesco's so shoot me now!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 25/03/2020 12:11

I went to the supermarket yesterday, I probably made a few mistakes. I bought what was on my list and some extra stuff but not much because I couldn't carry much and anyway I knew other people were waiting to come in so I didn't want to browse for long. I wasn't thinking very straight, found it hard to decide on things. It takes time to adjust and this is a very scary new "normal".

Whatever she was thinking inside the checkout assistant was pleasant and polite. Thanks to all of you shop staff for keeping us going.

Deathraystare · 25/03/2020 12:11

In Tesco a few days ago I was at customer services (where you buy fags and all. I only had two items so paid there. I had to wait behind a white line then lean forward and she leant back to handover my items.
