AIBU?

Customer service goes out the window when you're clearly an idiot!

This is more of a rant than AIBU, feel free to join me...

So I work in a supermarket convenience store. I was on the early shift yesterday and surprise surprise, people are still ignoring social distancing and essential travel... Just a few examples of people being idiots include...

  • Old people coming in to buy a newspaper
  • People coming to buy lottery tickets

Neither are food or medicine. What do people not understand about essential travel?

  • People coming to the till with a single item... Go to the self checkout FFS 😡
  • People not understanding the 2m distance. You don't need to be peeking over my shoulder whilst I'm dealing with the self scan.
  • People realising there's a queue to get into the shop and then grunting forget it. If you can 'forget it', it is clearly not essential so why the fuck are you out and about?

I was very snappy with a few customers yesterday but I'm beyond caring. I'm not going to stand with a smile while your idiotic behaviour puts me and people I care about at risk!

I must have been judged an idiot today then, I had one person in Tesco snap at me that I could only have one load of bread, and a checkout person tell me I had to queue two boxes away from the till, which put me at 4 meters away from them instead of two and had me standing in an aisle and blocking the way! I understand about social distancing, and was very polite to them, but I don't think I'm unreasonable by not understanding that this is what I should do when there is no signage and I haven't been out since it came into force! Surely people can be pleasant about it! I couldn't even follow anyone elses lead as it was 6.30 this morning and there were only another couple of people in there shopping as I wanted to get it done without kids in tow before my husband had to start work at 8! Sorry, I guess I'm having a rant too!

Judgemental lot seriously! I can’t get a shopping delivery slot. I can’t get a click and collect slot anywhere so I call in our local Coop every couple of days to get bread, thankfully delivered fresh every morning, and the little corner shop to get milk and eggs.

I’ve ordered some meat from an on line butcher. It will be 23rd April before it will be delivered.

We’re running out of potatoes because we’re living on jacket potatoes, chip sandwiches and we splash out every now and again on an omelette.

Yesterday, because I was feeling really low, like lots of other people, I bought a bottle of red wine as well.

I’d love to shop ‘infrequently’. I’d love to get food delivered but I can’t so I’m stuffed.

So yes @LisaSimpsonsbff

If I could magic perishable goods into my house I would, but I can’t. I’m ‘popping in for bits’ because my 73 year old husband and me (68) are living on bits!

Stop being so nasty and judgmental! Hello? It's not possible to ger everything essential from one shop in one visit any more. Places are not fully stocked. I'm a key worker with two. Underlying conditions and the last thing I wanted to do on my way home (having showered and changed into clean clothes before leaving work to protect you, supermarket check out person) was to stop off to try and get the bread and loo roll my daughter (off work and the main shopper for the household) had failed to get in her trio to another supermarket that morning. And quit giving me evils when, on finding nothing of what I needed and went for, I picked uo a bottlev of red wine before leaving. You don't know people's stories from their shopping baskets so kerp your masty thoughts to yourself!

@PlomBear I wouldn’t worry about it. Most people that answered your post have just proven that;

A) they do not read posts properly
B) they like mob (aka bullying) mentality
C) negative (usually because of issues they have with themselves)
D) Emotional thinkers (not that there’s anything wrong with it)
E) Jealous because they couldn’t buy chocolate (most probably the case)
F) All of the above

I read the fact you went out for hand wash & a loaf of bread. Hand wash is pretty essential (especially now). If you grabbed a few Easter Eggs at the same time. Good on you. It’s not as if you went out, unnecessarily, JUST to get the chocolate eggs.

Ironic that this thread is about idiots....lol. Oh at least some responses have given me a giggle.

We are a large family, 4 adults, 2 teens, 2 kids, I baby and 3 dogs. I go to the supermarket every other day, sometimes every day because I’m not allowed to buy enough due to restrictions. One has additional needs and really only eats chocolate, bananas and bread buns so chocolate is very much an essential item in our house and we will be out of loo roll tomorrow so I’ll be out trying to find some again in the morning.

I work in a store that sells food along with other products - a wide Range. So customers have bought “essential” items including wall art canvas, dish drainers, net curtains, etc, too much else to list, whilst in store putting staff and themselves and other customers at risk browsing like it’s a bank holiday. With their children. Whole families. Pregnant women. I’ve had enough. Why don’t they get it. It’s frustrating and upsetting to think this isn’t going away anytime soon because of these people. People will die because people are arrogant enough to not take it seriously. I work in a shop I did not sign up for this.

I'm probably repeating what's already been said......but if the stores refused to serve anything but essential items...ppl couldnt buy them n go the hell home. Why are daily papers being printed anyway. B and M sold hottubs the day after this came into force so who's to blame. Asda policed people entering store but left us to it once inside so people were forgetting the rule or it was difficult to stay apart anyway. It will be like Italy VERRRYYY soon.

Yes. But I have imagined it & this is the first week that I don't care. Anyway, I've got an entry in tomorrow's draw, so we'll see what happens.

I went out today for some essentials. Havent been able to get my usual delivery slot from Asda for 2 weeks! And I've got to wait another for a proper food shop. I left the kids home and went to local CoOp. The measures they are taking seem so strange - but yes; I understand why. I was only allowed to buy ONE item from every section!
I picked up cucumber and lettuce and apples and grapes. I had to choose at the counter which 2 I wanted.
No milk. No butter. Not much of anything. I came away feeling very teary; wondering how I'm going to feed 3 children home from school and a husband for the week on one loaf of bread?!
The last big shop I had delivered had 15 out of stock items and bc they didnt have anything to substitute them with; there was practically nothing in my shop. I'm down to last loo roll also.
I am sooo stressed out about it.
Im going to have to go back tomorrow in search of milk and more bread.
I hope people stop being stupid and just stay home unless it's absolutely essential. The quicker we do that - the quicker this thing will stop spreading and we can all go back to normality! 😭

@rubyandbumpsmum or they could be like me and normally do 2x team sports a week as well as a fitness class and daily cucling...Now I can run ...or....run. i don't even like running (well accept when playing my sport) but from now on its my only option. To go from all that activity to none would have an impact on my physical and mental health. Jo wicks doesn't cut it I'm afraid so my daily run/cycle is something I'm very greatful of.

I’m going to the supermarket tomorrow to get essentials to last until home delivery in a week and a half. I can’t drive so my husband and children will wait in the car whilst I go in ( and no before you start ranting he can’t go instead because he very rarely goes to the supermarket as he works two jobs and so he’d take twice as long and miss half the stuff). If whilst I’m there however I pick up some non essentials to keep my family who like most peoples haven’t left the house in a week happy then I will be doing so without being made to feel bad!

Chocolate is essential!!! Though I wouldn't go to the shop for just that. There's a 10min wait to get into our local and when I go it's 2m, no contact and contactless payments all the way.

Another day behind the counter and no let up in numbers. People now coming in twice a day for ice cream and sweets. We're closing at eight instead of ten to give us time to clean down and restock, and people are baying at the doors at eight when we close, for beer and crisps. Some people are doing essential and larger shops, but most of them? Lottery, fags, chocolate and booze.

I've been telling them - they might only have seen two people today, but I've served hundreds, I am the problem, I am the one they should be staying away from. But, no, still queuing out of the shop for crap snacks...

I could have written that post myself. I suspect we work for the same company. I have no problem with people coming in to buy luxuries with their essentials. I have a problem with people coming in to buy beer. I'm not putting my health at risk to serve you beer.

What if they wanted tinned tomatoes, bread, eggs, loo roll and beer and the only thing the shop had was beer?

Should they go without so you don't have to judge them even though they've already exposed shop workers to any virus on their system by being in the shop at all?

Report
StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 22:29

@Zaphodsotherhead

There should be no risk at all if the shop is practising the proper social distancing guidelines.

And if there were a risk, it would not be any different for people buying chocolate instead of bread.

The shop staff deserves a clap too...

I work for one of the big supermarkets and I can see both sides, as long as people listen and distance, the majority of people are not a problem, but unless you live in the same household- shop alone. If standing in a queue with your children-keep them close, dont let them run around or send them to get more stuff off the shelves, they have no concept of personal space, leave them with the trolley and you go. Please explain to your teenager's- its not a spectator sport, going in to check out empty shelves and 'nutters' looking for toilet rolls is just adding to the problem. And finally colleagues in shops are only doing their jobs, we've had as much information as the general public, we are people too, trying to keep ourselves & our families safe, while keeping the supermarkets going as well, sharing is caring and a smile & a thank you go a long way Smile

Social distancing only goes so far though. If that was all that was needed we wouldn't be wiping everything down, would we? People handle all the things they then put in their basket, which then handle to swipe the barcode. I'm washing my hands, using hand sanitiser - but we all know that's not going to be 100% effective.

I could be passing it on. People are risking themselves every time they go shopping. If they come once a week for loo rolls and beer and fags and lottery and bread, fine. If they've come for a look round and we've got no bread but they ask, nope, none, they buy beer instead, fine.

We've got blokes who are in twice a night for eight cans of Carling. They don't want bread and 'can't get any'. They want to be pissed. Same as every other night, 364 days a year.
