This is more of a rant than AIBU, feel free to join me...

So I work in a supermarket convenience store. I was on the early shift yesterday and surprise surprise, people are still ignoring social distancing and essential travel... Just a few examples of people being idiots include...

  • Old people coming in to buy a newspaper
  • People coming to buy lottery tickets

Neither are food or medicine. What do people not understand about essential travel?

  • People coming to the till with a single item... Go to the self checkout FFS 😡
  • People not understanding the 2m distance. You don't need to be peeking over my shoulder whilst I'm dealing with the self scan.
  • People realising there's a queue to get into the shop and then grunting forget it. If you can 'forget it', it is clearly not essential so why the fuck are you out and about?

I was very snappy with a few customers yesterday but I'm beyond caring. I'm not going to stand with a smile while your idiotic behaviour puts me and people I care about at risk!

Oh excellent another shouty, rude, aggressive, control obsessed poster has turned up with their own exclusive interpretation of The rules.

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 17:53

So what is your interpretation of the "essential" shopping rules then @BronwenFrideswide

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 17:55

My understanding and ability to think logically is clearly higher than yours Frontlineson as I don't need to ask, nor require pat on the back validation, for what would be a perfectly reasonable action under these circumstances, unlike you.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/03/2020 17:56

Everytime I see 'Frontline' I think of that flea treatment, for dogs and cats.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 17:57

Oh good. Another bunfight.

How can you say that, Barbies97 when this whole thread is full of posters abusing others and name-calling them? Does it make a difference because you agree with the name-calling posters, perhaps?

I see that a lot.

BBCONEANDTWO · 25/03/2020 18:05

So if you are in Asda/Tesco/Sainsbury's would they not let you buy any clothes at all?

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 18:07

Who are you Barbies97, don' t recall having interacted with you?

My rudeness, if there is any, is not a patch on posters such as BossAssBitch, I'm not even close to the level of abuse thrown around by some posters of that ilk.

Nah, cba with a bunfight Alsohuman, have to go out to the - shock, horror - communal bins to dump my rubbish I might - even more shock, horror - see some other people doing the same thing.

Eyeslikethesea · 25/03/2020 18:32

Oh my god.

JRUIN · 25/03/2020 19:07

OP I salute you and other supermarket staff for all the extra work you're doing, the risk you are taking and the abuse you're having to put up with at this time, and think you deserve a massive bonus for your efforts I really do x

cavabiensepasser · 25/03/2020 19:49

You do not NEED chocolate

Most people would beg to differ.

Then most people are fucking stupid.

cavabiensepasser · 25/03/2020 19:53

I would quite like for supermarkets and other shops to literally only stock essentials for the time being. You know, ESSENTIALS, not chocolate, so that absolute dimwits who 'NEEEEEED' chocolate would stay at home, knowing that there is none in the shops.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 25/03/2020 19:55

@cavabiensepasser we from retail and hospitality have been saying that for years. Ha. Now the rest of the nation can see what service staff has to deal with😂
"I want this chicken"
"That's beef"
"Yeah. Like from chicken, the animal. I know"

@PlomBear what don’t you understand. That wasn’t essential. That put shop workers at risk. How selfish are you?

user1511042793 - haha I thought you were the OP.

I'm going to Sainsbury's tomorrow as I need a proper shop. Do I need to clear it with you first love? Can I pick up a magazine and chocolate when I'm there?

Honestly some people. What are you going to do about me buying chocolate?

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 20:16

@StraightTalkingSandra I think you've missed the point, people are saying nothing wrong with making essential trips and getting treats etc. It's making desperate trips for non essential items that's the issue.

StraightTalkingSandra · 25/03/2020 20:20

Frontlineson - not missed the point love. People are saying they are picking up chocolate etc when getting other grocery items.

And why are offlicenses open then? Is the bottle of wine I'm going to pick up tomorrow essential?

They're not saying that @StraightTalkingSandra love! Off licenses are open? I've not seen an off license for about 20 years! Where are they?

It's the non essential trips people are objecting too!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 25/03/2020 20:43

Just an fyi Sandra, I have reported you for the certain references.

StraightTalkingSandra · 25/03/2020 20:55

nottoday3000 - I need locking up? Is that a threat? Btw - it's you're not your. Perhaps use this time to brush up on grammar?

Frontlineson - www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52033260
Off licenses allowed to remain open. Can you explain why this is essential?

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser - I have an English degree - I don't need your weblink but thanks anyway.

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 21:02

@StraightTalkingSandra I'll say it again, it's non essential shopping trips people are objecting too.

People going everyday for one item, like a paper!

You want wine, fine go and buy a dozen bottles to avoid going everyday for one, you smoke, go buy 200 instead of a pack of 20.

We have been asked to limit trips to shops, no one is saying that you can't get non essential items whilst you're there but don't go unnecessarily!

It's just what's been asked, the guideline to be followed.
