This is more of a rant than AIBU, feel free to join me...

So I work in a supermarket convenience store. I was on the early shift yesterday and surprise surprise, people are still ignoring social distancing and essential travel... Just a few examples of people being idiots include...

  • Old people coming in to buy a newspaper
  • People coming to buy lottery tickets

Neither are food or medicine. What do people not understand about essential travel?

  • People coming to the till with a single item... Go to the self checkout FFS 😡
  • People not understanding the 2m distance. You don't need to be peeking over my shoulder whilst I'm dealing with the self scan.
  • People realising there's a queue to get into the shop and then grunting forget it. If you can 'forget it', it is clearly not essential so why the fuck are you out and about?

I was very snappy with a few customers yesterday but I'm beyond caring. I'm not going to stand with a smile while your idiotic behaviour puts me and people I care about at risk!

@BronwenFrideswide i love that the list has tobacconist

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 16:13

you don't have a close relative or friend on the front line do you?

I do as it happens. Not that I expect you to believe me.

Also totally relying on newspapers at this time is not good, the pace of this is fast, we need to listen to news bulletins and act immediately, not the next days papers

Tell that to the 80 year old without the skills or money to go online and inability to absorb information quickly and easily.

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 16:15

Bodies I know, priorities eh? Tobacco is only sold in Tobacconists, nowhere else and that's all they sell, likewise newsagents only sell papers and other stationery.

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 16:16

I therefore find your cavalier attitude quite astounding!

Tell that to the 80 year old without the skills or money to go online and inability to absorb information quickly and easily.

Not able to listen to the six o'clock news? Or the news on the radio? Or maybe a relative could call
and explain slowly after each announcement what's now needed.

eeyore228 · 25/03/2020 16:18

There is still a minority coming to A&E for 1yr old problems, telling us that they want to be seen quickly because they don't want to get coronavirus! They are so rude with it, totally oblivious!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 25/03/2020 16:18

I actually never saw nor heard the word tobacconist before. Now i am trying to figure out how to pronounce it correctly 😂
Sounds pretty weird on google translate

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 16:21

Much easier to pronounce in the local language Bodies!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 25/03/2020 16:24

@BronwenFrideswide I believe so😂 My word of the week.

teenagetantrums · 25/03/2020 16:24

To be fair l think if you in the shop anyway and only once a day what does it matter what you buy. I'm still working in care home up to 12hours a day. So if on my walk home l want a bottle of wine of packet off cigarette while l pick up some milk or eggs what does it actually matter in greater scheme of things

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 16:28

It doesn't teeenagetantrums but you'll be likened to a mass murderer by the frothing zealots on here.

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 16:36

@teenagetantrums of course it makes no difference whatsoever, every single person in the UK should shop every single day and totally ignore the guidelines? Just go in pick up some non essential wine, chocolate etc

I mean what could possible go wrong with that? Some frothing zealots and government bodies would say it was spreading the corona virus, but of course a few people know that's not true!

Anyway I give up for a while, I need to collect my frontline son!

Ticklemeelmo · 25/03/2020 16:58

@leonardthelemming

I think having chemotherapy recently would put you in the category of the 1.5 million people who are most vulnerable and you should be eligible for the Government's food deliveries?

May be tricky if you're on a boat I guess but worth looking into if you haven't already..

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/03/2020 17:05

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser - tobacconist is pronounced tuh-backer-nist, with the emphasis on the middle section - or at least, that’s how I say it.

I have to say, that, whilst I agree that people shouldn’t be shopping just for non-essentials, I honestly can’t see anything wrong with picking up chocolate/wine/newspapers etc whilst you are in the shop.

notthemum · 25/03/2020 17:08

@Eyeslikethesea.
Last week I visited a shop with my Dd and my highly autistic gs. The shop did not have any of the things we wanted but my gs had spotted and wanted sweets. A child of his age could usually be told that they either couldn't have them or get them elsewhere but with his condition it wouldn't have helped, he wouldn't have understood, would have been very upset and someone could have got hurt. If the shop had the items we required we would have bought them.

No one does actually...

Thanks for the pronounciation tip

The day before lockdown, a bloke in the Co-op was stocking up on fags 'because of this virus thing'. I'm thinking, 'yes mate.....you wouldn't want to catch a serious lung disease.'

I do hope you have checked with the MN Coronavirus Police on whether this is an acceptable journey within the rules.

SDTG people here go to the Bread Shop twice a day, is this essential - probably not, is it part of their way of life, yes, and that's undoubtedly why the Government here have not stopped it, nor have they stopped people just buying newspapers.

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 17:38

@BronwenFrideswide I did ask for advice yesterday actually regarding my frontline son.

The general consensus was it was safer for others on the bus that I collected him and he didn't get public transport. I was given some sensible tips like getting him to change first, sit in the back.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to be sarcastic to people who are trying very hard to protect others? What's the need?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/03/2020 17:43

@Mirada - my mum is a life long smoker. A couple of years ago, she was in hospital for 7 weeks, over Christmas. It happened that, just before she fell ill, she had stocked up with plenty of extra cigarettes (because my sister, who takes her shopping, was going to be away).

Having spent 7 weeks in hospital, utterly unable to smoke, we thought that she might see this as a good time to quit for good - but no. She went straight back to her 20-a-day habit ‘because she didn’t want all the cigarettes to go to waste!’

Face-palm.

BronwenFrideswide · 25/03/2020 17:44

I am amazed you needed to ask or have your choice validated and approved of by a load of anonymous posters on a forum to be honest.

And for further clarification, if you go out to buy bread because you have ran out, not to stockpile, and you add chocolate to your loaf in the basket, you are NOT an arsehole

Frontlineson · 25/03/2020 17:51

@BronwenFrideswide I'm amazed and your lack of basic understanding and inability to think logically.
