Aibu to think private school provision at home can be done in state schools too?

Just that. Private schools are doing active live teaching via zoom, FaceTime and Skype. Full school days. Teaching via video link, then sending kids off to do work which they send back and gets marked, then another lesson. full school days of work. Even pe online! Parents don’t need to do anything and can get on with work.

State sector get home learning packs. No info about how to do bus stop division or similar technical stuff. Not heard from anyone at school since Friday, no information at all bar work timetable on website. Where are the teachers? Why are can state sector teachers not actively teach online and stay in touch with the kids? Why not more engagement? We are all having to work at home alongside our kids, why aren’t teachers doing this too?

Hah lamppost, that’s exactly like my Y11s at the best of times.

God knows what havoc they’re creating now exams are cancelled. I really miss them.

Ilovechocolate01 · 26/03/2020 10:29

My state school is open and teachers are looking after key workers' children, along with some with EHCP and pupil premium. Private schools in my county appear to be closed. They are much less likely to be used for this purpose so almost all will be at home and available to teach all day. Also children at my school live in a deprived area. They may have phones but are much less likely than children at private schools to have broadband and a laptop/PC to even connect to Skype/zoom - this is the main reason why we have given our children printed homework packs. Next school year we will be teaching 4 terms in one school to catch up and cover what's been missed

@noblegiraffe I really miss my year 11s too Sad. They drive me crackers but everything is too quiet without them!

Our schools are doing online lessons.

At the college (not a posh area), those without laptop or tablet have been allowed to borrow laptops from the college (IT department)

So far so good. Lessons taught as per normal schedule

I read to the end of page one and became too annoyed to read further.
State school teacher with a state school child and an under 3 at home. My husband is an emergency services worker and needs to be at work.
If I teach online from 9am - 3pm it would mean my own children would need to entertain themselves during this time. The eldest would end up watching TV and the youngest would ruin the house. It would also mean that my eldest isn't getting his work supervised until after 3, meaning he'd be working until gone 9pm.

I am getting up and posting the day's work on Microsoft Teams. I am then replicating this on another app to make it easier for parents. I have both apps downloaded to my laptop and phone and I am on constant call for the children to answer queries. I am answering questions well past 7/8pm as I know that some parents cannot access the resources between 9-3 due to them working on the only available laptop.

After I post the work I am then accessing an email account set up for work. I am reviewing each piece of work set up by the children and providing feedback to parents.

Along with this I am entertaining my toddler and helping my own child with his work.

Do fuck off.

jellybe · 26/03/2020 12:51

I'm finding it hard to believe you have had nothing from your school OP. Your not by chance one of those parents who didn't bother signing up to the schools comms system I.e seesaw at the start of the year and actually they have been sending loads of stuff out via that (just thinking of some of the parents from DHs class who can't be arsed to sign up then complain that they never know what he has been doing with the class)

If you are that concerned just email or ring the school as clearly you are in the minority when it comes to schools being shit at setting work etc.

SansaSnark · 26/03/2020 13:52

@lamppostdog I also appreciated that video!

Sixth form college teacher here. College shut entirely so feeling very lucky not to be on a rota. Two primary-aged DC at home.

One laptop (my own), one borrowed Chromebook which is too slow for me to use but OK for the kids to do TT rockstars and the like on.

I usually work 9-4, with no teaching on Wednesday afternoon. I've been starting at 8.30, taking half an hour out to do PE with Joe and then trying to do my best to work the rest of the day while homeschooling my own kids. My HoD thankfully said we had absolutely no need to do video lessons but I have set work for my classes on the day they would usually have lessons and the same amount of content. This means rewriting powerpoints to upload and rejigging handouts and worksheets to suit remote learning. I upload the resources to Teams, set an assignment, email them all to tell them, check in to see who hasn't done it, email the support tutors to pass on those names, mark the work and send it back. As well as fielding the many emails and chat messages from students who really can't get to grips with the quite simple interface.

I also teach classes who were supposed to be doing practical BTEC coursework that's impossible from home so we've had to hastily switch around the year plan so they have meaningful work to do which means beginning a new unit from scratch via Teams...not the easiest thing.

It is a full day's work, every day, while being continually interrupted! Oh yes...yesterday I did post a photo of being out in the sun...I was sitting outside while marking assignments on my phone and watching the kids, trying to give them semi-educational activities to do that mean they weren't badgering me to play with them. Sorry I decided to do that outside in the pleasant sunshine!

I quite like working from home and we're lucky to get paid but it is NOT EASY and it's not a holiday at all! I've spent most nights worrying about work and feeling very stressed about it.

scottsparkteacher · 26/03/2020 17:35

A teacher bashing post? Now? Are you taking the fucking piss? I’m on the rota to teach keyworker children, then looking after my own child the rest of the time. Parter frontline NHS. Also setting work and communication with parents and children via new email setup just for that. Oh and by the way I had two children turn up who both had one parent at home working 1) as a banker and 2) couldn’t prepare for lunch for child and make phone calls. Neither key workers

scottsparkteacher · 26/03/2020 17:36

Oh and we’re also doing this over the Easter holidays

Ifyoudontlaughyouwillcry · 26/03/2020 17:38

@PixiePowered
I’m not a teacher but thought exactly the same. My two are state school. We are going over stuff they’ve done and embedding what they know already and doing bits of other stuff life skills stuff too. And yes bit me and hubby are working from home.
I’m with you, everyone has an ‘entitled to something’ mentality .....off they can fuck!!
Totally new found respect for teachers x❤️💐💐

mumof2exhausted · 26/03/2020 17:39

My two are both at private school preprep and year 1 - lots of resources and they are doing some lessons via google classrooms. All great but please understand they are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They have to prove they are still “teaching” as summer fees are due after Easter holidays and they need to be paid to ensure that the school will still exist when this is all over. If they didn’t do all this extra work people might not feel they should pay fees and they could go bankrupt. It’s a business at the end of the day and we are the paying customers

maureenm48 · 26/03/2020 17:41

Some State schools are still open, looking after some of your children.

mumof2exhausted · 26/03/2020 17:41

Also after 4 days of “teaching” my kids I feel all teachers deserve a bloody medal and a break over Easter for sure! It’s hard work. Don’t bash the teachers they are doing their best

youcantchoosethem · 26/03/2020 17:43

I would love my sons school to give proper online lessons. He has an EHCP and can be challenging and by yesterday I nearly lost it. After battling with him and trying all different tactics he had achieved nothing and I was getting pressure from my work with conference calls throughout the day and then the icing on the cake was his form tutor phoning saying why had he not uploaded any of the work set on google classroom and that I need to work with him on it. I gave fairly short shrift that I am not his teacher, I have 150 vulnerable adults that I currently trying to protect and help and my team to distance manage on new systems that they are only just getting to grips with. I suggested they did need to set up video links to show him what to do and help him. I tried to help him I really did but after he threatened to push me down the stairs at one point I decided I needed to get out and went for a ride in the fresh air to give us some space for 20 mins. That helped and today we have managed a little bit more. We can’t do it all though. For info his school have shut completely - they are not offering places there for any students. They have given the option for him to go to another school 25 miles away with some of the other EHCP students but he doesn’t know any of them going, hates change, and has physical issues including asthma so really don’t think that is an option and would mean a taxi there and back! Frustrated

Workingmum34 · 26/03/2020 17:44

Yes I wonder how they are managing to do this for the classes they teach of 20 ish students and students who have laptops / iPads and phones. Oh and where they will still be expected to pay full fees?

Our students don’t have laptops, or phones some of them food. Some share bedrooms with three or four siblings and don’t have somewhere to work. Some aren’t even safe with their parents or carers and staff have to phone them each day to check they are still ok. And they are the ones we know about.

Lots are in school because we aren’t shut.

Nik2015 · 26/03/2020 17:45

Wow, even in a worldwide state of emergency teachers are getting a bashing....wow!

I literally have no word for you!!!

janice511 · 26/03/2020 17:45

My DDs state school and 6th form are doing on line lessons, even french speaking sessions, they have set up microsoft team.

simiisme · 26/03/2020 17:46

I'm glad that there are others on here who have made much better points than I could.
I'm a secondary school teacher & have just finished working via my pc. As well as responding to every single email from students (59 yesterday, haven't counted today) I have emailed out a newsletter style message to my Tutor Group.
I am currently working on rewriting the KS3 scheme of work.
My next job when I finish that (it will be a couple of weeks' work) will be to write an improved Year 7 Induction programme.
If I have any time left at all I have a list of online professional courses to complete.
There are large numbers of teacher haters in the UK. I don't get it. I'm 53 and have only been a teacher for 12 years, working in a university & in industry before that. I always held teachers in high regard, long before I became one.

Windowboxgardener · 26/03/2020 17:47

DS private school has not been teaching live with zoom or anything else.
I get an email in the morning with a bunch of attachments which look suspiciously like worksheets that need to be printed out, and you are supposed to do them at a certain point in the day and email them back to the teacher We haven’t got a printer and my Y2 DS is too young for a computer and email account so the whole thing is hopeless. It requires masses of adult help and supervision to navigate all this stuff - which I can’t give because I am trying to WFH FT. If term doesn’t start as scheduled in April then we are screwed - I am not paying school fees in order to teach him myself while at the same time not being able to earn any money to pay the fees.

Personally I think the commercial online stuff like Maths Factor, which lots of schools (state and private) already have accounts with, is much more useful and easier for the kids to use.

mdh2020 · 26/03/2020 17:50

I think it depends on your state school. My son , like all the staff in his state primary, is teaching online every day. Children who Didn’t have a computer at home were lent one by the school. The Head decreed that no books or worksheets were going home

Janus · 26/03/2020 17:51

My son, year 4, didn’t leave with as much as a study pack. To be brutal there’s more to worry about. Our teachers are looking after the children of key workers, longer hours, no Easter holidays for them, have to strip out of their clothes when they get home and shower for peace of mind.
I’ve joined something called IXL, it seems good. We do about half an hour each of maths and English, less today as been in the garden all day. I guess we will do more when it rains?!
I’d say keep kids happy, don’t bug them to be doing hours of work. But that just my thoughts!

allstarwarredout · 26/03/2020 17:51

Preparing online lessons, marking work, preparing yr11 grades... Also at home dealing with own children in some cases.

MaterEstIratus · 26/03/2020 17:52

I’m a state school teacher working from home - not doing online teaching but am working my butt off to provide lessons, resources and support for our pupils. And worrying like crazy about the learning gap which will have widened even further. I dread getting the kids back up to speed next year and trying to compensate for what they will have lost. I’m definitely not on holiday.

EvilPea · 26/03/2020 17:53

How many times have people posted on here over the years that internet is not a necessity and if your struggling, cut it.

State teachers have to set homework attainable for all, I haven’t told my year 6 what they are doing is probably pointless, no one will see it, no one will mark it. It’s keeping them busy, that’s all I can ask.

Not every house has decent internet, not every house has an involved parent to help, or printers, or ink for printers.
God knows how the teachers are meant to do it.
