Cream carpet with grey paint?

alphajuliet123 · 23/03/2020 23:25

My stairs and landing have a cream/beige flecked carpet, no plans to replace it. The walls are also creamy 'latte' coloured but are desperately in need of a repaint and I want to use a shade that's more grey.

The hall floor is slate with grey walls and paper, and I wanted to continue with grey up the stairs and landing but it won't look right with cream carpet, will it? There is an archway between the hall and stairs so I do have a 'cut off' point if you see what I mean.

AIBU to mix beige and grey? I can't imagine it'll look right. And if not what colour can I use to redecorate, needs to be kept light and airy but I'm sick of the beige!

Beige and grey can work together. Cream and grey is fine.

LouiseTrees · 23/03/2020 23:47

@alphajuliet123 I have a beige stair carpet and a grey wallpaper and it goes fine. It’s about the tone/shades and how they mix. They are both neutral so I’m sure it will look lovely.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 23/03/2020 23:56

I wouldn't put grey walls with a cream/beige fleck carpet. What about using stone which is sort of between cream and grey?

Yeahsurewhatever · 23/03/2020 23:58

It’s fine but so dated.
Don’t do grey

I agree it could date very quickly and think a more grey-toned stone too. I think it works but then you need lots of bits and pieces that are bright and pops of colour or you end up being Mrs Hindu boring dated Instagram

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 24/03/2020 00:03

Grey is (hopefully) going out of style. Grey was the go-to "neutral" colour even though it's more suited to places like prisons.

And it doesn't go with cream/beige.

You reckon grey is on the way out?

I've been looking at stoney colours, they mostly just look a bit neither here nor there. I guess a warmer grey would look better than a bluer grey. Perhaps I should go darker and bolder? Annoyed with myself for not getting a load of testers when I had chance!

My father in law suggested Magnolia Grin

Oh my god what a typo! MRS HINCH!

I have a cream/beige carpet in the lounge. Feature wall is Farrow and Ball Plummet and the other three are in Pointing, looks good.

alphajuliet123 · 25/03/2020 00:21

Oh that Pointing might work @TheWernethWife, it looks quite yellowy? I like it, looks nice and fresh. Do F&B do tester pots?

Please don’t do grey. All these grey houses are just awful. They look like the inside of battleships. Why are people so afraid of colour all of a sudden? It’s depressing!

Honeyned · 25/03/2020 05:06

How about a mushroomy pinky shade?

Dixiechickonhols · 25/03/2020 07:19

Dulux egyptian cotton is greige. We have it in several rooms.

TheWernethWife · 25/03/2020 08:16

Yes, F and B do tester pots

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 25/03/2020 08:21

I'm not mad on grey. I have a creamy beige bedroom carpet and went for a soothing pale green wall.

Thehop · 25/03/2020 08:24

Egyptian cotton is a perfect t warm neutral greige that changes with the light

wineymummy · 25/03/2020 08:38

All our carpets upstairs are Auckland Berber Stone (a flecked beige but not too brown, very neutral and good for hiding small marks.) Our stairs and one bedroom are painted in Dulux White Mist. It's a very very pale grey, you would think it was white until you see it against brilliant white and realise it's grey. The two go well together. DH and I are both architects and think we have pretty good taste (!) so yes, I think grey and beige can work as long as you keep both shades light.

alphajuliet123 · 27/03/2020 19:14

Thanks everyone. I had earmarked the Egyptian Cotton so it's good to see a couple of you mention it.

This is another I like the look of. Is that 'greige'?

@Muddy I love green but not convinced it'd work in this case. My living room is a light grey green which looks great with the [same] carpet. Just not sure about it up the stairs.

Mellow mocha is more brown. Used to have it in one room prefer Egyptian cotton and think it looks more modern. Most of my house now Egyptian cotton it’s very easy to live with.
