To even consider staying in a holiday cottage?

This might sound stupid but I have a private cottage booked in the North Yorkshire Moors. Were supposed to be going next weekend. Is there anyway we would still be able to go? It would basically be my family going in our car and effectively moving into another house. We would exercise by doing a walk in the moors so plenty big enough area to practice social distancing. The rest of the time would be in the house but it's better than mine and a change of scenery also!

I think the only valid point is we could be harbouring CV and yes the North York Moors is not a place where I would want to become seriously ill

What is it that you don’t understand about

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL ONLY

Stay the fuck home

You don’t build up rights to flout the lockdown because you’ve gotta full tank of petrol.

STAY THE FUCK HOME

BloggersNetwork · 24/03/2020 07:51

@Dreaming69 you still don't get it do you?
What if you have a car accident on the way to the holiday cottage and ambulance services can't get to you?
Write this one off ffs and stay at home.

Lougle · 24/03/2020 07:52

I know we all live in an instant technology age, so it can seem a bit trivial, and we like to ridicule Boris Johnson's hair, etc., but the Prime Minister addressed us last night. He was very clear about what we can and can't do.

Only essential travel. That means that even people who go to work have to decide if their work is absolutely necessary and can't be done from home.

So how on earth can you decide that travelling to a holiday cottage meets that criteria?

daisypond · 24/03/2020 07:54

That means that even people who go to work have to decide if their work is absolutely necessary
No, that is not right. The employer decides, not the employee. You cannot refuse to go into work.

zafferana · 24/03/2020 07:56

I can't believe after 4 PAGES of people saying STAY AT HOME you're STILL thinking of going! OP FFS the instructions last night were absolutely crystal clear. You can't fucking well go ON HOLIDAY!!!!! Ask for a refund right now on the basis that our government has instructed us to stay at home and not go on holiday. You are not a special case. THE RULES APPLY TO YOU TOO. Stop being such an entitled twat!

WatermelonEatingCat · 24/03/2020 07:57

Of course you should travel to your holiday cottage.

Boris did not specifically reference you by name did he? Nor did he reference the lawn mowing person by name?

So it does not count, does it?

Seriously OP. You have to cop onto yourself. And grow UP.

Whaleandsnail · 24/03/2020 08:00

Instead of waiting for the holiday cottage to do the right thing, ring them or email them and point out that you going on this holiday is unnecessary travel, which is not permitted at the moment.

Ask for a refund or to change the dates. Don't be complicit in the cottage owners flouting the rules.

There is no reason for you to go to this cottage, other than that you want to, which unfortunately at the moment, is not a good enough reason. Its disappointing yes. But not necessary.

MarthasGinYard · 24/03/2020 08:03

Good Lord

We need a Lock down

Ginnymweasley · 24/03/2020 08:03

You know what fuck off with your selfishness. It's people like you that are the problem. This isnt essential travel so you shouldn't go but obv you think the rules dont apply to you because you are so important. I haven't seen my family since xmas, I was meant to go up next weekend but I'm not now as it's not safe to be travelling around. But you want to go on holiday. NHS staff are risking their lives daily but you want to go on holiday. People are losing their jobs but you want to go on holiday. And lastly people are dieing but you want to go on holiday. Entitled much?

Illberidingshotgun · 24/03/2020 08:04

I think you should just email back and point out that there are some rather extreme travel restrictions in place, and point out to them that going on holiday is not one of the four acceptable reasons for leaving your home, so obviously you won't be going.

Yes, you may lose your money (depends on the agreement and what insurance you have) but this is miniscule price to pay compared to many other people.

FazakAli · 24/03/2020 08:07

@SubjectMatterExpert by stupid I mean people who are deliberately flouting the rules and by reading the Op's last post, who still don't get it. Her only concern is picking up the infection not spreading it across the country. So stupid isn't the right word here, maybe self absorbed.

With regards to learning disabilities, I don't regard them as stupid at all. My son has medical conditions and a learning disability and even he is self isolating. He would be severely affected if he caught the infection yet he's fearful of passing it on to others. So he Skype called his grandmother on mother's day instead of visiting her. So no I wouldn't call him stupid, far from it.

SurferRona · 24/03/2020 08:10

It sounds stupid because it is. Gvt statement the day before your post OP:

Guidance for people planning to visit second homes or holiday premises. Essential travel does not include visits to second homes and similar, whether for isolation purposes or holidays. People should remain in their primary residence. Not doing so puts additional avoidable pressure on communities and services already at risk.

ellanwood · 24/03/2020 08:13

@Dreaming69 - you need to email the owner and tell them that it's now against the law for you to go there, so you would like her to rebook you for next year. She really shouldn't be encouraging you.

You are saying car's full of petrol, got the food, won't be in contact with anyone, what's the problem. But what if you break down and you or the breakdown service staff/garage staff contract and spread the disease to a new area? What if your child has it without symptoms and the cleaning staff at the end of the week contract it cleaning up after you? Or one of them has it and the surfaces they cleaned are now infected. You only have to touch a door handle or light switch.

You're not thinking this through. The Stay Home message is so that all contact, especially between people in different areas, stops. Absolutely stops. The virus can't live if it can't transfer. It can't transfer if you stay home. It can if you go to a holiday cottage. It's boring but it's really not that bad. Most of us live in relative comfort, have enough food to live on, have access to clean drinking water, hot water, heating, TV, internet, books, music, toys for DC. It's not arduous. It's just different.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8143267/Wealthy-capital-dwellers-DEFY-government-advice-escape-cities-rural-retreats.html

This. applies. To. You. YES. YOU !!!!

It maybe not your second home. But it's the same really, stating NOT to travel.

What part of this do you not understand ?!?!

Fatasfooook · 24/03/2020 08:14

UK government “stay the fuck home so we can try and minimise what is going to be a colossal amount of death and suffering”
UK people “can I still go on holiday?”
Fucks sake

acatcalledjohn · 24/03/2020 08:15

We wouldn't have to come into contact with anyone else would we?

Unless you crash, or break down.

Just fucking don't.

Wannabangbang · 24/03/2020 08:16

I despair, i really do. I will spell it out. STAY AT HOME FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF EVERYONE.
THE NHS IS COUNTING ON YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING.

MuthaFunka61 · 24/03/2020 08:18

@SubjectMatterExpert.

I've been attempting to social distance whilst exercising my assistance dog twice per day for 2 weeks whilst also choosing to predominately self isolate as I'm waiting tests results for lung function.
During these 2 weeks there's been a handful of people who have respected my boundaries and govt advice.
If others have a death wish that's their prerogative.

I don't live in North Korea and I suspect you don't either, it's not what's being discussed here.

ThanosSavedMe · 24/03/2020 08:20

Wow. So the PM (whether you like him or not) has said we all have to stay at home. Overwhelming response on here telling you to not be so fucking stupid and stay at home. But one other likeminded idiot (holiday cottage owner) says it’s ok. Oh yes you should definitely go 🤦‍♀️

FFS

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 08:21

@Dreaming69 tell them you want a refund. If they say no name and shame publicly

I woke up to an sms alert from a government... Not a time to go on holidays

lottieloop · 24/03/2020 08:23

Whole of Mumsnet bangs head against wall due to small minority of others that just don't fucking get it 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

What the fuck is wrong with you OP ???

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 08:23

The only valid point is that it's a lockdown when people are supposed to stay at home.

May I just ask people who can't understand what stay at he means to stock up on contraception? Do it for the greater good...

Rosehip10 · 24/03/2020 08:23

"this might sound stupid" - correct, utter stupidity.

Imstillskanking · 24/03/2020 08:24

Stay at home.

It's very simple.

STAY AT HOME

Bufferingkisses · 24/03/2020 08:24

OP you need to reply to say that there are travel restrictions. Travel is to work in essential areas only. The instructions couldn't have been more clear. They are trying to protect their own interests. Understandable but irresponsible.
