Australia...our schools aren't closed yet and I need advice

About half of the pupils in our small school were kept at home today. The other half went in.

The government hasn't closed them yet. The education minister said something about keeping them open but keep your kids at home if you can.

The HT has said that there have only been infections here in our state from people who';ve been abroad and there have been no community infections.

I'm umming and aahing about what to do. I kept mine home today but now I'm not so sure after her email.

What would you do? Looking back?

I'm in South Australia. Our state borders are closed now...and all pubs and cafes are closed as are theatres etc.

I just don't know what to do for the best. School are working on a home education thing but it's not ready yet.

Keep them off.

Treaclepie19 · 23/03/2020 07:36

I'd keep them home.
I kept mine home from about 4 days before our schools closed.

Mitzdob · 23/03/2020 07:37

Keep them off.

I would keep them home if you can...... a few days in the scheme of things after all is going to be nothing and they will be less exposed...

Bumpsadaisie · 23/03/2020 07:40

Keep them off if you can.

In the uk things changed really quickly. Last Sunday it was business as usual. Statements that schools wouldn't close etc. Just vulnerable and elderly to isolate, plus symptomatic people.

By end Monday everyone who could was permanently to wfh.

By end Wednesday we were preparing for schools to close Friday.

You'll probably find schools close in a few days anyway.

Keep them home, pretend Jacinda Ardern is actually our PM and follow her advice. NZ are about to go to a “keep in place” order for a month.

I wouldn't believe the head teacher. A lot of cases are going unreported, so he can’t possibly know that there are no community cases.

Keep them off.

I’m here in Oz and I pity parents. The federal government said last night that schools should stay open as normal. Most state leaders though are saying schools are open but don’’t send your kids- this all came out at brekky time this morning! Very mixed messages between state and federal authorities as “ policy by the seat of the pants” on many fronts. I don’t envy any police trying to deal with this though.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 23/03/2020 08:26

I’d keep them off too.
We kept ours home 3 days before they announced schools were closing, DD1 has asthma so we were not prepared to take any chances.

FortunesFave · 23/03/2020 08:29

Right so that's pretty unanimous. One DD will be thrilled and the other will be annoyed. I work from home anyway....I might move to the bloody shed!

Mine are old enough to make their own lunches etc. so that's a relief.
