So I want to apply for this job, the thing is I have a Muslim surname, so for example on my passport and letters it’s Aisha Mohamed. It’s a slight difference, but I’ve changed the spelling of my surname to Muhammad by deed poll last year, but stupidly didn’t renew my passport 🙄. And they said they will check if I have the right to work in the UK, I’m a Swedish national and I have settled status, so when they check I’ll come up as ‘Aisha Mohamed’.

AIBU to just write Aisha Muhammad on the application form? I know it’s small, but the spelling annoys me and I don’t want to be known as ‘Mohamed’. What do I do?

I would just apply for a new passport now in the new name. But if it hasn't come by the time you need to show proof, explain the situation, show them the deed poll (and e.g. driving licence?) and explain you're waiting for your new passport to arrive.

Just apply in the name that matches your ID, then if you get the job, tell HR and IT of the correct spelling and get it amended on their systems. That's what I do.

Apply for a new passport immediately. Apply for the job in in your new name and take your driving licence, birth certificate and deed poll with you as ID.

Apply for a new passport immediately. Apply for the job in in your new name and take your driving licence, birth certificate and deed poll with you as ID.

The problem with that is that it may take ages - I had to get a replacement passport a couple of years ago, and it was about twelve days after the appointment that I made at the passport office. Not sure if they are still making face to face appointments, or the OP is able to travel to one if they are, but all likely to be taking longer at the moment (Unless current situation, with no travel has reduced demand significantly and reduced processing time).

I'd apply now, with same name as passport, and change later if application progresses and you get replacement ID and role.

If asked for referees and they know you by your old name, wither inform referees what to expect, or tell new employer they know you as "xxx".
Good luck.

Why did you bother making that change? It's practically the same?

QuestionableMouse · 22/03/2020 20:17

Why did you bother posting? It's not helpful?
