To think that everyone needs a pamphlet explaining WHY we are supposed to socially distance

A lot of the people I have been talking to - educated, usually sensible people - are taking the view “well, I am healthy and I am not worried about myself, and my kids will be fine, so I am still going to see friends and go out”.

The thing is, I really want my life to be back to normal. I want my dd back at school, I hate working from home, etc. An the only way we can achieve that (until we have a vaccine) is if we all work together to reduce the spread of the virus, so that the people who are already infected are not passing it to others. People don’t seem to get that.

What will a pamphlet do better than all the official information on the internet and on the news? Do you think people will suddenly change their minds because it has been printed out for them?

Stupid is as stupid does. Same goes for selfish

iheartislesofwight · 21/03/2020 23:09

people are stupid, selfish and me, me, me orrientated

HowIrresponsible · 21/03/2020 23:09

People know. They just don't care.

Sorry, I didn’t mean that literally... but I am just feeling really resentful because I am a lone parent and finding this mentally hard. But I am scared for myself, For my dd, for my parents, for my elderly neighbours. Yet friends and acquaintances, who usually like and respect, are treating this like some slight inconvenience, that must be ignored at all cost, and think I am weird to mostly stay at home and not want my dd to meet up with friends.

Some of us know all the risks, know that there will be catastrophic numbers of deaths, but do not accept that isolation will change that, and believe that it will create its own huge problems.

Sometimes the collective interest has to override the interest of the individual.

‘people in this country have had enough of experts.’

Lots of people won’t change their routine until it’s too late to make a difference. The government’s decision not to lock down, to offer ‘advice’ rather than instructions and to bring in restrictions in dribs and drabs has actively encouraged people not to take this seriously.

People are just thinking oh it's not go out, not avoid family contact too I think. The family above me are acting as normal today, close family visiting all day, family kids will no doubt do their usual playdates now school is shut. . Neighbours either side have had family round too. What can you do?

It's been announced today by the Irish government that every household in Ireland is to receive a pamphlet by post in the next few days.

wejammin · 22/03/2020 00:00

I actually think the government has not done enough to make information available. If you don't watch the news or go online (and no, not everyone does), or can't read, or speak English, you may not properly understand everything.

Not to mention, I'm a fully qualified lawyer and I had to read the guidelines several times for each release to absorb all the detail. Not everyone has the capacity or desire to do that. It's not accessible.

Khione · 22/03/2020 00:07

If people can ignore what is out there already then they will certainly ignore a pamphlet. The money is better spent elsewhere I think.

The only thing that will get through to people who are sticking their fingers in their ears and going 'blah blah blah' is when someone close to them is seriously ill or worse OR one or more famous people die.

Currently, outside London, cases are still not affecting most people on a personal level and I genuinely think some people haven't got the imagination to believe what we are up against.

Celeriacacaca · 22/03/2020 00:07

People just need to listen to this, even though it was recorded before cafes and pubs closed. The message is unequivocal.
