Tesco delivery slot not needed

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:16

So, I have a slot thatI don't really need.
I am able bodied, not ill, a key worker so still in work.
It was booked before all this took off but I feel rubbish about it as am quite capable of going shopping myself next week (all being well).
I book food delivery purely for convenience in normal times- as many of us do.
Do I :
a) Keep it just in case my situation changes
b) offer it to neighbours (who I don't know) -I would have to pay for their shopping and get it delivered to me
c) give it up and risk nobody benefitting from it - it may just disappear...

A week or so ago I booked up my Tesco slots for the next 3 Monday’s. I always get my shopping delivered on a Monday and pay for delivery saver. I am able bodied but I’m not going to cancel. My children have autism and I cannot take them shopping at the best of time.

I would keep it myself but maybe if you don’t need it cancel the slot. I’m sure someone will log in and grab the now available slot.

You can add a new delivery address so could get it delivered to someone else. Do you have any friends or relatives that are self isolating?

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:23

Do you think it will be made available or just disappear?
I like the thought of someone getting the last slot but at the same time think Tesco might just do away with it.

Can you ask on your local social media?

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:25

Surely the slot applies to the area it was originally booked for?
Unfortunately, my family are miles away. I don't think they will change the address?

If anyone knows of anyone who needs it I mean?

Inferiorbeing · 21/03/2020 15:26

If you can afford to why not use it and donate the goods?

Bellag79 · 21/03/2020 15:26

Can a few of your friends club together and do an order for a food bank or anyone vulnerable?

Astillbe · 21/03/2020 15:31

I'd just keep it, it's probably the last delivery you'll manage to get for a long time.

I'd booked my usual slots with Sainsbury's and will hopefully get my delivery on Tuesday. This weeks had a lot of items missing but I still got the majority of what I'd ordered. After next weeks delivery there are no more available slots. I bet it is not just the elderly and high risk people who have booked all the slots up, it will also be the same idiots who have been buying way more than they need.

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:31

The shop does not include unwanted/unneeded items.
I will have to physically go and buy the items at the store for myself.
It's the delivery SLOT that is a luxury rather than a necessity.

Mummyshark2019 · 21/03/2020 15:33

Keep your slot. Nice thought but you don't know what's going to happen.

Astillbe · 21/03/2020 15:35

You could always add some more items to it to donate to a food bank or give to anyone you know who needs anything?

If you give up the slot it won't necessarily be anyone who is genuinely unable to go shopping who gets it.

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:40

I'm so sorry to say this again but I am buying things I need.

The items i am buying are just my weekly shop. Not extra items that I can give away!

If I don't get them delivered, I would go and buy the items for myself in a shop!

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far!
For everyone saying give away my weekly shop, I can't unfortunately!

Well surely not going to the supermarket unnecessarily is playing your part in social distancing.

I'd order enough for 2 weeks and then go to the supermarket when those supplies run out?

BoomBoomsCousin · 21/03/2020 15:43

Since you can't really "give" it to someone who is vulnerable, you may as well use it. Presumably, being a key worker, you are coming into contact with more people than most at the moment, so keeping you away from the places where more people do go (like the supermarket) will help at least as much with containing spread as much as keeping any other random person away would, wouldn't it?

Daftodil · 21/03/2020 15:43

Keep the slot. As a key worker, the fewer people you come into contact with, the better for everyone.

amandalives · 21/03/2020 15:47

I'd keep it op, DH is a key worker, we'd have no food if shopping was left to him. I'm SAHM so can nip to a few places getting our necessities.

BoomBoomsCousin · 21/03/2020 15:47

I bet it is not just the elderly and high risk people who have booked all the slots up, it will also be the same idiots who have been buying way more than they need.

It's probably more a matter of it being people who think it's a good way to increase their social distance. And they're right.

Astillbe · 21/03/2020 15:48

I just meant you could add a few items on which you could donate if that would make you feel better about keeping the slot. Personally I would definitely keep the slot and feel no guilt about it.

Whynotnowbaby · 21/03/2020 15:49

I think I would go round and ask neighbours if anyone wants anything added to the order but still keep the order for my household. Probably ask them to transfer you the money before you complete the order if you don’t know them. That way you’re helping others but still looking after your own needs.

saraclara · 21/03/2020 15:50

Do you have a local 'good neighbours' scheme or a local church that might know of old or infirm people who might need it? Presumably they'd guarantee the money coming to you, and send someone to pick the shopping up.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 21/03/2020 15:51

Keep the slot, it’ll keep you away from other people in the shops and reduce the pressure on them.

Astillbe · 21/03/2020 15:52

@BoomBoomsCousin
Where I live people have been going shopping, eating out etc pretty much as normal yet there have been no slots available for over a week.

I agree it is better in terms of limiting the spread to have shopping delivered but I think a lot of those slots will have been taken by greedy, selfish morons.

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:54

Some great ideas about adding to the shop!
I can deliver bags myself to friend's doorsteps! That's a good plan!

Yes to keeping myself away from shops as a key worker... better for everyone.
