Tesco delivery slot not needed

Tescodelivery · 21/03/2020 15:16

So, I have a slot thatI don't really need.
I am able bodied, not ill, a key worker so still in work.
It was booked before all this took off but I feel rubbish about it as am quite capable of going shopping myself next week (all being well).
I book food delivery purely for convenience in normal times- as many of us do.
Do I :
a) Keep it just in case my situation changes
b) offer it to neighbours (who I don't know) -I would have to pay for their shopping and get it delivered to me
c) give it up and risk nobody benefitting from it - it may just disappear...

You should use your slot yourself as normal rather than going to the supermarket. That way there'll be more food left in the supermarket for those who can't do online shopping and you'll not risk infecting anyone, seeing as you are high risk working in the NHS!

Lovemusic33 · 21/03/2020 17:27

Please, if you don’t need a slot then cancel so someone else can have it. I online shop every week as I have 2 kids with ASD and am parenting alone (as well as working part time), I have a delivery every Saturday, I’m now struggling to get slots, I have next weeks booked and then I can’t get another for almost 2 weeks. I do hope more slots become available as I know all supermarkets are asking for more workers and drivers. Lots of local businesses here are now doing cooked meals and produce mainly because cafes are now shut and they have adapted to doing take aways and deliveries.

VanGoghsDog · 21/03/2020 17:38

I wouldn't worry too much, it'll probably be cancelled or nothing available anyway.

I booked one for 4th April (I usually use Sainsburys and have a pass but they have no slots at all) and every day more stuff gets chucked off it.

I booked it because I am social distancing for two week so I can be clear and then go and stay with my elderly and very high risk parents. It's too much risk to go to the supermarket, and when we are there bound to find they have nothing anyway (nearest is a 20 minute drive from me as it is).

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 21/03/2020 17:42

I had 2 slots booked for 25th and 31st, when I saw that elderly and vulnerable people were unable to book I cancelled them.

I can drive around to various shops to get food, they can't, so they get the delivery slot.

Started a different thread asking about people's moral dilemmas. I would probably count this as one. I think we are all facing so many at the moment. Really hard!!!

ShastaBeast · 21/03/2020 17:51

We booked a slot for Monday and are now in isolation with symptoms and can’t go to the shops. Luckily we bought one long life milk before the panic buying started so that will have to do until Monday night.

I really hope people start going back to normal and they are stockpiled in case they need to do 14 days in isolation. They don’t need more than that, just one extra week of supplies is enough.

According to guidelines I can come out of 7 day isolation on Monday, but still feel quite unwell.

SkiddySkidz · 21/03/2020 17:58

Use it and offer to buy someone who is at risk items they need if they can’t get a slot.

Fedupofballs · 21/03/2020 18:01

Don’t give it up, order things for neighbours who need it but can’t get out and haven’t got a slot. People will pay for what you get for them and you’re doing a real favour.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 18:04

I am really grateful someone gave up their slot yesterday. Just had a food delivery. I am coughing away and feel really ill so don't know what I would have done.

rosegoldwatcher · 21/03/2020 18:13

Keep your delivery slot and luxuriate in it. Goodness knows when you will get another! (Absolutely zero available here from any supermarket chain.)

Beautiful3 · 21/03/2020 18:19

Honestly I would keep the slot for yourself. You can always check with family and the neighbours if they need anything adding to your shop?

SurferRona · 21/03/2020 18:41

Keep it, or not but check fb or other local sites and buy in for others who have to self-isolate, I’m getting bits for neighbours over 70s who have underlying conditions when I shop.

BoomBoomsCousin · 22/03/2020 02:33

@Mummyoflittledragon
There’s no way for someone ordering to know whether the person who won’t get a slot because they have ordered is more or less in need of the spot than them. The only way to get those spots to the people who need them most I’s for the stores to open those spots to the people who need them most before they open them to everyone else. (Something I’d totally support). Until they do that, it’s pointless everyone holding off in case there is someone more vulnerable. None of the spots would get taken.

safariboot · 22/03/2020 02:40

We should all be avoiding unnecessary travel and interactions right now. Keep the slot.

Tesco probably won't show up anyway though.

Ontheboardwalk · 22/03/2020 02:48

Keep it.i can’t see the slot being opened to anyone else

Ocado are letting people remove but not add items to existing deliveries. I can’t see Tesco opening the slot to someone new

RoseLalique · 22/03/2020 02:49

Can I suggest you keep your slot?

As a key worker you’ll be coming into contact with people on the ‘front line’ as it were, and will therefore be doing your duty to others who are social distancing and have no choice but to go to the supermarket. Especially the elderly who may not have the tech to book a slot.

I have a theory that trolley handles are one of the worst things you can come in contact with so in the nicest possible way, can you keep your hands away?! Grin

It’s kind of you to suggest it though.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 02:52

Nobody should take a slot they don't need.

Pixxie7 · 22/03/2020 02:57

Keep the slot you are probably working hard enough

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/03/2020 03:20

I agree with you on all counts. Idk what in my post would make you think otherwise. I also dk how giving slots to elderly / vulnerable etc would work. Tesco aren’t proposing this and I shop with them. I have a BB. I also have a dh. But I manage some days better than others when he and dd are not around and he and dd need to do various care for me when they are. So he is time poor and I would take advantage of this if offered. As is I have booked deliveries in advance.

Tescodelivery · 22/03/2020 05:27

Offing it to neighbours refers to the use of the slot! If they wanted to order anything and have it delivered (to my house next door!) x

I’ve got a slot booked and added bits on for colleagues/family/friends who haven’t been able to get hold of items. It’s a bit pot luck what turns up but I can either make do or hunt out the rest if desperately needed. I’m trying to stay socially distant where possible as mum has COPD.

itsstillgood · 22/03/2020 06:26

I get my shopping delivered same time each week and book the slots a while in advance. Have one today, no further ones booked. Earlier in the week I knocked on my neighbours to let them know I had a delivery booked and if they needed anything to let me know.

VanGoghsDog · 22/03/2020 11:33

I also dk how giving slots to elderly / vulnerable etc would work. Tesco aren’t proposing this

Sainsbury's sent an email saying they would prioritise slots for elderly, vulnerable and NHS, with delivery pass owners next.

But I have no idea how they are going to find out. They said they had the information on their database. Not sure how they do. And when I've logged onto the website there is nowhere to say anything like that and just zero slots for three weeks.

viccat · 22/03/2020 11:41

Keep the slot. Avoiding going to the shops helps everyone, and we should all be sticking to our usual shopping patterns as that way shops would be in a better position to manage stock levels. In your case, having this delivery is your usual shopping pattern.

CoisFarraige · 22/03/2020 11:41

I'm in same position for tomorrow. I keep the slot for my normal shopping but asked my elderly neighbour what she needs - she has very recently been diagnosed as coeliac so gluten free items not easy to get in local small shop. I will split the shopping before it comes into my house and leave it on her doorstep.
